The big problem with the lattice Deformer is Houdini is that the cage size automatically adjusts itself when you animate some lattice deformed geo. Which causes unwanted deformation on top of the lattice deformation. Time for an update ?

How is Lattice fundamentally different from Bend?

Lattice enables you to deform a mesh in an endless amounts of ways... very different from Bend

added an edit node then lasso selected the middle verts

Instead of using the edit node, drop down a group node to group your points, and then use the transform node to animate the grouped points.
