@@martinnovotny3148 They were supposed to get their ships, and they got blown up. They could either run back, get gunned down that way or run into the fray as soldiers.

@@SuperBatfreak Infantry soldiers hardly do that because wanted get into ships when enemies were all around. Moreover they charged them from own barracks where had weapons or at least personal shields and some parts of gear. They went to fight without everything except of basic weapon.

They, at least Gurney, recognized how hopeless it really was. They were just trying to buy time for the family to escape.

@@martinnovotny3148 there was no tactical advantage to retreating, the Harkonnen were landing troops and their warships were overhead as mentioned, it's better to confront them head on and rob their airpower advantage by keeping both sides close to the point the Harkonnen may not want to bomb the entire area, furthermore they had AA guns covering them so there's that. And the Atreides did have their personal shields.

And forget about any "loudest" tocsin, church bell, or timpani/tuba blasts you've every heard, the first few nuclear blasts vaporizing both armies instantaneously will produce a strange super-loud single-note kind of music that will puncture ear drums for 100s of miles all around. Won't that be a glorious auditory experience? Although one must admit a wipe-out style nuking would detract significantly from the otherwise somewhat sporting nature of a conventional military engagement.

@@ziakiryu4079 actually in the original Dune novel, it is revealed that Bene Gesserit operatives were busy strategically planting the seeds of their preferred theology in the minds of the native people of Arrakis for well over a century before the Atreides family even show up on Arrakis, priming the pump for the indigenous population to earnestly yearn for the coming of their Lisan al Gaib "chosen one" so that the sisterhood ends up with all sorts of time to come up with an ideal candidate for the Lisan al Gaib "job" through their experimental birthing programs on various planets (Caladan being one of them - as in Paul being one of several birthing experiments).

He was an Atreides because that was his house, those were his principles, and that family was who he loved. The Dune series as a whole is *meant* to be a message about the dangers of certain political ideologies. Namely to always question your leaders so that they can be held accountable for their actions. So politics in dune is kinda unavoidable. The magic was that they pulled it off for the 2021 movie and made it a very entertaining.
