Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier is another 12 Dancing Princess retelling. It's more suspenseful and has a decent romantic subplot. It's one book I've reread multiple times over the years. :) Most of Marillier's works are fairy tale retellings, and she, in my opinion, is a master at taking something old and twisting it into something fantastic!

Oh man, I'm sold from the first sentence. The Twelve Dancing Princesses was my favourite fairytale growing up. It still kind of is, it's so strange how nobody seems to have heard of it. Fairytale retelling plus romance plus horror? Sign me up! The reason that the sisters blur together is probably because that's the way it is in the original, only the eldest and the youngest are distinct. Because I think it would've made the already bizarre premise that much more implausible. You get the feeling that the eldest is the ringleader, and the youngest is the most important side character (because of course the old soldier is the viewpoint hero).

*SPOILERS* I think that Camille was pretty distinct as well as Verity. She came off as really bitter, cunning, and ambitious, for lack of better words. But I completely agree for the Graces and the triplets, I feel like Erin Craig paired them off like that to make it easier for the reader to keep track of who was who since there were so many sisters, and consequently, couldn’t develop their personalities as easily. The triplets dressed more “scantily clad” and made s*xual jokes, while the Graces’ personality trait was just being the younger bunch out of all of them with Verity being the “baby” of the family who drew creepy drawings 😂

I really enjoyed it. I'm a big chicken too when it comes to horror and I wasn't creeped out. Probably because most of the things I freak out about are the music/sounds/jump scares in movies. I don't see books very vividly in my head, so maybe that was why? But going back and like, really thinking on some scenes like SPOILER BELOW . > > >>> > > > > > >There as a scene where a dead body like, crab crawled or something? I re read the page and was like OH YEAH THAT"S CREEPY. You're right about the sisters. They were very cardboard cutout. I had the ARC, and the ending was extremely rushed for me I thought? Like, when it was ending I felt like it needed more pages and Cassius's reveal at the end was weird too? I want to re read it again, and like pay better attention. I know the fairy tale and I loved the twist on the story. I gave it a 4/5 star.

This is like a darker version of The Twelve Dancing Princess...... (SPOILERS AHEAD) The Barbie movie was just about 12 sisters who lives with their father and is trained under a duchess who supposed to train them like proper princesses but were treated badly instead (the 12 sisters are all so unique from one another but really none of them acts like a real princess and they just want to live their life happily with their dad) and then they would sneak out at night, opening this magical portal that leads them to this golden pavilion that reminded them of their past mother's pavilion to dance.

I also felt like romance wasn't necessary, like this is the one fantasy book that I didn't want romance to exist in because Cassius only felt like a name. He didn't have a particular personality in him. And since he wasn't at the "balls" at all, we didn't get to see much of his personality soo yeah romance wasn't all that necessary.

She loves him so much she kills herself with it and turns into sea foam. Hans was really into unrequited love and sacrifice.

Elle not caring for the romance in this particular book has nothing to do with her religious views, nor her choice to curse or not.
