Fun fact, there is an important reason Laenor's dragon, Seasmoke, looked like Viserion. Dany's dragon eggs that hatched around 17 decades after this episode were laid by Dreamfyre. Its just that they never hatched while they were supposed to (and so wouldn't without the blood and fire ritual that Dany set in motion) and ended up getting stolen before Viserys became king and finding their way to Essos were they were eventually given to Dany. Thing is, Seasmoke came from an egg that Dreamfyre herself laid. So, it looks similar to Viserion because they are actually brothers here, they were just born in different centuries.

I think the problem with the match between Rhaenyra and Aegon, ethics aside, is that Rhaenyra has to wait at least more than a decade to have heirs of her own. Should anythimg happen to her in that decade, her line ends with her. And she wouldn't be able to start having children until she would be in her thirties; certainly not too old to have some kids, but still approaching the territory there you'd see a decrease in fertility. In the books, Catelyn, while in her early to mid thirties, thinks she could still give Ned another child, it's not too late; but the implication clearly is that she doesn't think she has that long of a window to have more children. Marrying Aegon to Rhaenyra is great for the Hightowers, because Aegon isn't losing out on having kids anytime soon. Should Rhaenyra die before they have children, then Aegon is heir. Should they marry but stay childless, Aegon could remarry if Rhaenyra dies before him, and have children even at a much older age than she could. Worst case, another child by Alicent, or their decendant, would rule after Rhaenyra and Aegon are dead. There is no losing for the Hightowers in this match, but Rhaenyra would seriously be gambling her line, the line of her mother.
@ghostofdurruti Жыл бұрын
All true... but I don't think the prospect of Rhaenyra marrying Aegon is quite as one-sided in favor of the Hightowers as this makes it sound. Rhaenyra would gain one major advantage by doing so: she would neutralize the threat Aegon poses to her ascension to the throne. The Hightowers would have no reason to oppose her anymore, since their blood would eventually sit the throne anyway. In fact, they would have every reason to support her as much as they could, since a young king ruling alone would be in a precarious position.
@ancatdal Жыл бұрын
@@ghostofdurruti That is true, but it also presents another issue, in that it would likely undermine Rhaenyra's position as ruling queen, to have a consort that most would consider the legitimate heir. It's also not uniformly great for House Targaryen, because it still leaves the problem with House Velaryon unsolved; another dragon-riding branch of the family that could decide that Rhaenys' line is the legitimate one, as per common Westerosi laws of inheritance, where a daughter inherits before an uncle. Marrying Aegon would be a further insult to the Velaryons, favouring House Hightower AGAIN. And if Rhaenyra has to wait some 12-15 years to have kids, that's basically a generation of dragon-riders on her side that she'll be missing out on having in relation to the spurned Velaryon branch.

They'll get eventually marry and have a son but not soon enough. Otto needed to remove Daemon from the succession line so he suggested Rhaenrya because she would be easier to lose against the king's son. But could you imagine Daemon and Aegon competing for the throne? Daemon was a bigger threat. He'd never back down, had a lot of supporters, is a full targeryan and a MALE heir. Aegon would have nothing against him. Otto's plan worked to a point. Daemon was out of the succession, Rhaenrya was heir and Alicent had a son. Except Viserys refused to replace Rhaenyra. Otto's idea of betrothing Aegon and Rhaenyra was a good one. It would attempts to have her married, would have legitimized her becoming Queen, and the Targaryens marrying brother to sister would be completely expected. Rhaenyra would be in her mid twenties by the time having children became a factor and there's no reason to think that wouldn't have worked out. Otto is actually a decent hand he just has a King that will not see. If you go back to the meeting they had after Viserys first wife dies at the end you can see Otto sit back and sigh as the King rants his way out of the room without having the issue solved. No. Rhaenera would be in her 30s when Aegon is old enough to wed and bed. If they put off the marriage until then, the Hightowers can argue that she's too old to produce heirs and should be set aside. But it keeps her bound to Aegon and childless in the meantime. It also has the potential to divide the realm and let the Hightowers pick up the pieces; the general public isn't a fan of Targaryen incest. The marriage of King Jaehaerys (the old king in the intro to episode one) to his sister Alysanne was a love match, but HIGHLY controversial throughout the kingdom. They married in secret on Dragonstone and their mother hid the marriage from the people while trying to force the kids to annul it. Side note: Alysanne is my favorite Targaryen. She forced the king and his lords to do away the old tradition of first night, where lords could legally come and take the virginity of brides on their wedding night. She stood up the the king and asked if he would've been okay with that happening to her!

@@mamaseesa3122 Weddings like betrothals in Westeros can be done at any age. Consumation is based on whether the man/or boy can and whether the woman has "flowered". eg Viserys II had his first child at 12. The point is when they can they would be expected to. Its very likely they would have kids. Politically, sure it could all go to hell and revive the entire Maegor anti incest etc stuff or any number of things. But its way better to have them betrothed for all concerned, especially the Hightowers, as the clear fracturing of the succession is spiraling the realm to conflict. Otto has ambitions but he is also the only character who really sees what is coming IF the various personalities don't open their eyes and tone down the arrogance. Everyone thinks he manipulates Alicent, which he does, but he isn't lying to her or anyone else. ~ Assume Aegon at 13-14 impregnates Queen Rhaenyra at 28-29. They have a child. Boy or girl do to changes by Visery inherits. Hightowers become the second most powerful family, at least politically. Hobert and many others would likely accept Rhaenyra more as Queen as a result. The ten year gap is a problem more for Rhaenyra as Aegon would be her heir until she had a child. plots and such. The main problem in that period would be House Velaryon and their claims.

I don't think the Crabfeeder had Greyscale. Greyscale usually drives a man insane and he wouldn't have the loyalty of so many around him for many years if he is dangerous to be around. Since he wore a mask, he is probably disfigured from fighting and might have some kind of burn on his skin. Since in the books, it does not mention that the Crabfeeder has these kinds of features, it is difficult to understand what it is exactly, though.

@@Gauldoth88: It was confirmed behind the scenes, so I guess it depends on you whether you consider word of god canon or not. And I agree that the inactive form isn't as common, and there are hints that it's an active condition in this case too, viz. that he seems to progressively worsen over the few episodes we see him. That being said, the exact epidemiology and pathogenesis of greyscale is not exactly clear. Even though it is believed that it spreads through physical contact and is highly contagious, we don't know for sure, and pre-scientific conceptions of disease was shrouded in a lot of superstition for most of history. If you take e.g. something like bubonic plague, while it's extremely contagious it's still dependent on various factors, like the strength of someone's immune system or their age, and some might just be naturally resilient to it. Could be that Daemon just didn't give a shit in the heat of battle and got lucky and didn't catch it.

Unpopular opinion. King V is a selfish king. He makes decisions based on his own needs verse his duties and strengthening the kingdom. He states "he never imaged he'd remarry", but that's not true. He knew that if he didn't have a male heir, heir would have to remarry until he got one. He creates a lot of animosity and then hides his hands. The correct thing to do was to either marry Lady Leana (and have an heir with her) or keep Deamon around, and let Deamon and Rhaenyra marry( so the Targaryen name would be stable). But, his lust for Alicent, made him disregard the logical thing to do.

Great episode Daemon was a badass in this episode, You can say he's bad sh*t insane but I have to give him his respect for going into Stepstones to take out a bunch of Crabfeeders men while being shot at by archers just to get close to Drahar.

Viserys had to have his stag caught and held by the other Lords in order to kill it with a spear, a long range object. Rhaenyra killed her boar without it being restrained by others. It was an intimate kill. This symbolizes how she is the stronger ruler between Viserys and herself. Add how Daemon demolished the CrabFeeder in the same intimate form as Rhaenyra and the boar (hand to hand, skin to skin) also shows their similarities.
@perseusveil9376 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't really symbolizes that, tho. You just made that up plus ignored that the boar was already gravely injured by Criston Cole, so perhaps he has a place in the symbolism? i doubt you would add him lol But no. The boar was injured and she had a dagger - and it was a bloody and chaotic death, you could argue it symbolizes... idk, that she will be a bloody queen? Lmao. And Viserys had a hangover + deers can be dangerous and he's the king, thats the only reason the animal was restrained. The show isn't that deep and Rhaenyra isn't that special.

Viserys was never meant to be a King nor he was deserving. Most importantly he was a weak man with a good heart. The only thing which kept him alive during his reign was that he lived through the most peaceful times of Targaryen dynasty. He never rode a dragon, avoided wars and he was a bad politician. The most telling sign is that the throne never accepted him that's why he was constantly getting cuts on his body by the throne itself.

While rewatching the series, I noticed that Viserys is giving wine to two-year-old Aegon, lol. Now he is a bad father for Rhaenyra, in the end he will be like that for all his children. By the way, only now I understand how right Otto was when he offered to marry Rhaenyra and Aegon. The king laughed, but in the end .... his house will cry ... The writers' decision to make the scene with the white deer was beautiful, but not justified. What is this omen for? Show Rhaenyra a good queen? But she will never be. Then why?..

Eh, I think another confirmation as an heir is debatable, like politically it could be as well viewed as weakness of the claim and that king thinks that lords wouldn't follow through with their oath, thus making his decision to name an heir apriori questionable.

I love your reactions. According to one of the showrunners, Caraxes was born deformed and that is why his shape differs so much from the other dragons, even so in the book he is described as a powerful, thin and fierce red dragon (the blood wyrm), the series did justice to his appearance. The battle of the Stepstones is good because it shows that dragons do not always define a battle, the Crabfeeder advantage of the terrain in his favor and bet on a war of attrition, the power of the dragons was deprived because the enemies never faced them directly and whenever they could they hid inside the caves (similar to what Dorne did when Aegon tried to conquer them, they couldn't fight the dragons and therefore opted for a war of attrition) Daemon and Corlys were alone financing the war while Craghas Drahar had the Free Cities financing him. Also, technically speaking, Targaryens aren't the only ones who can tame a dragon, theoretically anyone with Valyrian blood can tame a dragon (meaning even Corlys could tame a dragon because he has Valyrian blood), Targaryens always said that only they could tame dragons but in reality it was just a lie so that no one would try to steal that power from them.
@ndalogumede1867 Жыл бұрын
Not true. Remember Not all families in old Valyria were dragon riders. Targaryens were far from being one of the wealthy great families in valyria but they most certainly were dragon riders...the velaryons were not dragon riders even in old valyria.... so while it is true that dragons recognize valyrian blood, it still has to be blood of a dragon riding family, hence the targaryens being the only dragon riders in westeros, not the velaryons (unless of course they have a targ parent) and not the celtigars (who are also valyrian) and not the qoherys family (descendants of old valyria aswell). Even targaryen bastards (although many do fail as you will see in season 2 with vermithor) could become dragon riders.

@@ndalogumede1867 what about Adam Velaryon or Nettles?
@ndalogumede1867 Жыл бұрын
@Omayes-yv3ed Addam Velayron (originally Addam of Hull before he was legitimised) was a bastard of laenor velaryon. Leanors mother being Rhaenys Targaryen answers your question. Nettles is a dragonseed (bastard) of unknown descent. Nobody knows whose bastard she is, but she was born on Hull. She is obviously a velaryon bastard. Her father was obviously a velaryon who was mothered by Targaryen. There are many targaryen and velaryon marriages.
@Omayes-yv3ed Жыл бұрын
@@ndalogumede1867 Laenor dind't like women, even in the book it is said Adam and Alyn are sons of Corlys. Nettles is a special case because she doesn't look Valiryan and the way she tame her dragon was different. Even Jaehaerys was afraid someone in Essos could tame a dragon when Ellysa Farman stole 3 eggs in Dragonstone.

Some really horrible writing/directing here. As if we didn't already learn that the writing was making Daemon into a loose cannon, they certainly solidified it here, by sheer exaggeration. We learn for three episodes that the Crabfeeder lot, is a formidable bunch. In fact the Vaelaryans & Daemon w/ dragons cannot handle them on their own, the are losing a war to them, going on three years, they ask the king for help. Daemon spurns the King's aid, by taking a journey on a row boat, rowing all the way to the Crabfeeder stronghold in the mountains. A lone man, who must of had spaghetti arms from all that rowing, managed to tear apart the Crabfeeder army on his own. The Crabfeeders, who were supposed to have been a formidable bunch, winning a war for years, decided to give up their 2 strengths, the safety of being deep in the mountain caves & their line of sight, being able to see anything coming at them from many miles away, dwelling in a mountain. Only the leader of the Crabfeeder's eyes counted, as he was the only one looking out for a surprise, from the ground, not the top of the mountains, as he should of had lookouts seeing anything coming from miles away. What's even more amazing is Daemon, entering a dark narrow cave in the mountain, was able to manage to kill the leader of the Crabfeeders, without being shot up with dozens of holes from arrows. It's as if Daemon had a smart phone that oversaw the security cameras in the cave, so he can take that risk of going into the enemies cave, not blindly, as he did. If the writing managed to have any viewer bite on such a scenario, they could of easily substituted, Daemon with a five year old & the results would of been the same. Some really, really dopey writing. It took the writing 39 episodes to make Jon Snow a bad ass in the GOT, they turned Daemon into Superman in three episodes. Cringe.
