Aemond handled the situation very poorly, but he was at least in the right in that Rhaena was not owned Vhagar . Dragons are not property. They are not inherited by their children unless they prove themselves worthy of flying them. You do not get dibs just because your mommy or daddy rode it. Laena sure as hell didn't. Neither did Rhaenys or Daemon, Meleys used to be Viserys' mom's dragon and Caraxys used to be Rhaenys' dad's dragon. Dragons choose their riders, and Vhagar chose Aemond. End of the story :)

There is no "stealing" a dragon. They're not an inheritance to be passed down from parent to child like a castle or title. It's established that any Targaryen can make their claim to a Riderless dragon, but the Dragon also has to accept them. If they reject you, you'll either be indefinitely ignored or burnt to a crisp. Aemond made his claim and Vhagar accepted him. It's not an insult or a crime, it's just a game of "first come, first serve"

A Comment about alicent that I read somewhere: “Thing I love about Alicent is her being right or wrong depends entirely on the viewers bias. From a 21st century perspective she's a jealous, bitter cow, hating someone for living their best life. But from a Westerosi perspective she's done everything right by her culture and family. Every duty expected of a Westeros woman she has fulfilled, while Rhaenyra is breaking every law they have. If Viserys wasn't backing his daughter every noble in Westeros would be saying Alicent was right. Is She good or evil... depends on whose asking the question “ And Viserys really didn’t give a fuck that his son lost an eye 😂, I like him but I also hate him. All the things you listed as her doing "right by their standards" reinforces Princess Rhaenys' statement that Alicent is an oppressed woman despite her privilege as queen. Siding with Alicent because Rhaenyra is clever about enjoying the pleasures of life (to an extent) despite her duties, is quite the take, and I've noticed its mostly men that side with Alicent while women tend to favor Rhaenyra, despite acknowledging her imperfections. Alicent >is< a jealous, bitter woman. This woman who gives Larys sexual favors, had the guts to put on her green war dress when she heard Rhaeyra slept with someone...and Rhaenyra was right in calling her out as a self righteous person. And I find getting angry on her behalf because Rhaenyra knows how to find loopholes and shortcuts around her constraints, an unpleasant eye opener. Maybe I just see myself in Rhaenyra, because I'd do the same, maybe more tbh.

Love the reactions but I think ya'll are missing the stakes here. This isn't about simple personal beefs between members of the royal family, they are playing the game of thrones and like Cersei said "When you play the game of thrones, you either win or you die". Alicent's kids are in real political danger if Rhaenrya ascends the throne. Not because Alicent wants to murder her family members, but because breaking ancient traditions of succession often leads to incredible instability and warfare. There are high Lords whose power could be challenged by ending male primogeniture, meaning Aunts, sisters, female cousins and grandmothers (and potentially bastards) could begin joining the fight for succession. There could be houses like Lannister and Baratheon who may use Alicent's children as tools to advance their interests in keeping the patriarchy by advancing Aegon as the "true heir". Moreover, living airs with a legit claim are always a source of competition for monarchs like Rhaenyra, who rise to power as a result of tradition and custom being broken. Remember how often family members killed each other in GOT to secure titles, lands and holdings? Rhaenyra's kids are also in real danger by being bastards who have been put in line for the Iron Throne. If their true parentage is exposed and acknowledged by the King, the Faith and the nobility, they could be killed or exiled.

IN FIRE & BLOOD** Princess Rhaenyra when Prince Aemond had his eye cut out by her sons insists that he must be **sharply questioned** "so we might learn where he heard such slanders" Now, some people seem to be confused as to why this would be a notable suggestion on Rhaenyra's part, assuming that this would be no more serious than a stern talking to. However, in Westeros, this is a well-established euphemism for torture: >He was **questioned perhaps too sharply**, and died with much unsaid. \- ACoK, Jon V >Then he sent his Kingsguard to seize his squire, Prince Viserys. “Chain him in a black cell and **question him sharply**,” Maegor commanded. (...) After nine days of questioning, he died. \- Fire & Blood, The Sons of the Dragon >No fewer than forty-two persons stood accused, for those named by Lord Graceford had in turn named others when **questioned sharply**. \- Fire & Blood, The Lysene Spring and the End of the Regency *(for context, George Graceford, was the Lord Confessor - that is, torturer - at the time)* >“None, this one grieves to confess. We beg your pardon.” > >**Mercy, thought Dany. They will have the dragon’s mercy. “Skahaz, I have changed my mind. Question the man sharply.”** > >“I could. Or I could question the daughters sharply whilst the father looks on. That will wring some names from him.” \- ADwD, Daenerys II As you can see, this is a well-established usage, leaving no doubt as to Rhaenyra's intention.

Alright, A defense of Targ Incest lol. From all info we're giving the Targs do this for 2 reasons, Bloodline Purity & Magic. Purity: They need to do this because they're a foreign ruler in Westeros. They came over from Essos. Giving their name & blood to a more "natural" or "Native" born Westerosi family would likely make the other Houses want that more native person on the Throne. And if that Native has a Dragon to rally around maybe that's enough to gather strong support, even from another rider. So keeping Targ Bloodlines pure also kept their power in place & prevented almost any other Family from posing a real threat since it was mostly Targs who had Dragons. Now Dragons aside this was a IRL thing too, with Kings not wanting too many people with linage being able to challenge them or their preferred Heir. Magic: Now this is the real reason to me that their Incest is acceptable. Valariyan abilities to Ride & order around Dragons is a magic instilled in their blood. If the Targs "weaken" their bloodlines by marrying none Dragon riders too often then their ability to control/ride/etc Dragons will diminish. They reference this in this show with Alicent saying last ep how she's surprised Rhae's kids eggs hatched due to the non-pure blood of her current kids. Clearly there's something legit to this & it's stated in the books & the show. I mean in this world owning a Dragon makes you more powerful that whole empires. There's even mention that the eggs won't hatch period if the bloodline magic is too diminished. I think this is a legitimate & acceptable reason for them to practice incest. It gives logic to it. It's not just gross family fetish shit, it's got magical implications & consequences if they don't. And I gotta say y'all our in the minority when it comes to disliking Daemon/Rhae together. Most of the fanbase & other Reactors I've watched either like them or at least accept it. But most shipped them by this episode. Me being in that camp. Look IRL incest is BIG oof & no no territory, but in this fictional world where the above rules are established I've accepted it's the way things are. Targs specifically as they have real legitimate & logically reasons for why they do it. The above said I'm turning topics. Personally I strongly hope we see other places where Dragons still live. And that they just died off in the west. I hear we're possibly getting another show set in Yi Ti or however it's spelled (it's super far east & a China stand in for this world) & I personally hope we see Dragons there. Maybe smaller which explains a lack of expansion from that area? Or something like that, I just hope we see more creatures.

First of all, it's better to clarify how things work in this universe. Dragons are not objects of inheritance passed from parents to children, they have a life of their own and they choose their riders. A riderless dragon has no owner, so anyone with Valyrian blood can attempt to claim it. Aemond did not steal the dragon, and even if he had "stolen", he would only be taking what first belonged to his family, for Vhagar was his Grandfather's. Afterwards, you can't blame him for defending himself in a 4v1 fight, when it was the bastard boys who started the fight. "Severely questioned" means torture, i.e. Rhaynera wanted her brother tortured to hide the fact that her children were bastards.

The glifs Daemon and Rhaenyra drew on each other's foreheads during the wedding were the Valyrian symbols for Fire and Blood, their house words. In the books not much is known about traditional Valyrian/Targaryen weddings, they are often held in private or secrecy, but what it states is that the couple is married in Fire and Blood and that women are allowed to officiate the wedding (unlike in the rest of Westeros). The show did a great job of expanding on that piece of lore by showing us one of these ceremonies.

When claiming a dragon, Targaryens must always be careful. In the end it's the dragon that chooses it's rider, it isn't a guarantee that a son/daughter can inherit a dragon simply because it was owned by one of their parents. For examples : Caraxes and Meleys. They are both dragons of similar age that already had a rider before the current ones we see in the story. Caraxes (Daemon's dragon) was owned originally by prince Aemon, his uncle and Rhaenis's father. Meleys (Rhaenys's dragon) was owned by princess Alyssa, her Aunt and Viserys and Daemon's mother. Rhaena is a child, so she just assumed she would one day claim Vaghar, her mother's dragon, but Aemond beat her to it. From Aemond's prospective, this could be his only chance to bond himself with a powerful dragon. All other free dragons are in Dragonstone, which is held by Rhaenyra, so he would have had an hatchling at most if he didn't try it with Vaghar now and considering the looming conflict once Viserys dies, he wouldn't have been able to make a difference with an hyphotetical dragon he still couldn't even ride on.

Daemon does love his daughters; some people behind the scenes don’t like that Daemon receives so much love so they are trying to make him as disgusting as they can. Every scene where you see how much he cares gets cut. If you want you can search to see the scene which was cut where he is consoling his children after their mom’s death. Otto sent Aegon to bed because he was extremely drunk and sullying the family name (Hightower) of course.

I totally get Allicent here. I mean wouldn't you be mad if someone cut your kid's eye out because they said the truth? Especially since Vhagar choose him of her own voltion. It's just two mothers who have been put in terrible position by a horrible system and are trying to protect their families.

Vhagar belonged to Baelon, Daemon and Viserys's father. When Baelon died, Viserys didn't inherit her. Laena claimed her. Likewise Melys was claimed by Rhaenys. She didn't automatically go to Daemon or Viserys. As Laena said last episode, you have to claim a dragon. If the dragon doesn't want you, it kills you. Aemond did nothing wrong.

Vhagar is the oldest dragon currently living. Dragons never stop growing until they are very old. Some dragons have had multiple riders. Some are 1 and done. Some have had none. There are wild dragons, born from eggs the Targaryens have been unable to collect that have never had riders. It's an interesting relationship and one the Targaryens encourage with putting eggs in the cradle. Targaryens and their dragons grow up together, learning and exploring. Dragons are the nuclear weapons of this world. Vhagar is the oldest and biggest. No other dragon can match Vhagar's size, weight or ferocity. You picked up on the sizable power-shift Aemond's claiming of Vhagar represented for the two competing branches of House Targaryen.

All three kids are permanently at risk because she couldn’t drink moon tea and he couldn’t do his dynastic duty a couple of times. I respect that HotD was like trying to not kill their gays by secretly making Laenor survive but Jesus Christ, the kids that he raised just lost their biological father and now they believe that their "adoptive" father died and their mom and new stepdad may have plotted his murder, like y'all are not looking out for these kids' emotional health whatsoever. Half the trauma those kids have endured is by Rhaenyra’s own hand. Not only that, but what about Corlys and Rhaenys? They just lost their daughter and now they think they have “lost” their son and heir, and it was orchestrated by their own family. But it’s ok because of the way Laenor was born? Because he didn’t want this life? Naw Fuck that. I say. Laenor was fuck boy low-key who wanted and love all the perks of a noble born son but didn’t want to do his duty. Those 2 girls were still mourning and just "buried" their mom, not ready to claim the dragon just yet. Incorrect, In the books and alluded in the show is the idea that Targaryens are physically immune to the effects of incest but not mentally. Thus it's understood that incest likely causes the madness seen in the Targaryens along with the rampant stillbirths and odd births they have. You also have to acknowledge that when a Targaryen bonds with a dragon it changes the individual, it's believed dragon riders can't get sick, they heal far faster and better than others, they are more confident and headstrong.

I think Daemon laughed because of what vaemond said and how pathetic that is, here he's insulating two children that are less than 10 years old for political benefits on his niece funeral

Dragons can't be stolen. They chose who they want. Also any mother would react as Alicent did when their son is maimed and no punishment of any kind is given to the attacker

In the book it's obvious that they kill Laenor. The writers changed this for the show to make you want to root for Rhaenyra, but I wish they hadn't done so. Both the blacks and the greens are supposed to be as bad as each other.

the guy who directed this episode also directed the battle of winterfell in game of thrones, that's why it's so fkn dark.

Ameond actually showed his bullies their true place at that moment, My man deserved that dragon as he claimed him by having guts.

Don't care what anyone says Visarys is a horrible father, he was more concerned about Rhaenyras sons being insulted and acted like Aemond losing his eye wasn't even that important 😂

yeah i think they mean a good father to rhaenyra. It's quite obvious how much he favors her over Aegon and Aemond.
