I enjoyed your GOT content so now that I know you're doing this show I subbed again. I'm lukewarm on HOTD so far. It will never redeem what Dumb and Dumber did to GOT so in a way being back in that world just aggravates me. I already know they kill all the poor dragons, ruin the lives of the small folk and wipe themselves off the map, so the rest is just seeing how they get there. I enjoyed the first season but I'm not blown away by S2E1. Neither Rhaenyra nor Alicent are particularly sympathetic characters in my book, both of them brought this on themselves. I'm only watching it if I can keep finding ways to stream it for free. I'm also annoyed that they cut the season down to 8 episodes after nearly a 2 year wait. It feels like shrinkflation but with a series.

Quite a bit of delicious irony in this first episode of season 2. While watching season 1 I always suspected that Alicent's strong disapproval of Rhaenyra's dalliances signaled a deep seated jealous of Rhaenyra's relative freedom to bed who she wanted. Now, in the first episode of season 2, I think I have proof that my suspicions were correct. Rhaenyra indulged herself when they were both girls and now Alicent is indulging herself now that they're both adults.

Kind of a bummer they cut Maelor from the show, it’s more gutwrenching that she picks him because Jaeharys is the heir and then Cheese fucks with Maelor about mommy wanting him dead before Blood lops off Jaehaerys’ head. The idea that the surviving child knows their parent chose them to die over their sibling would really mess with their head. It was much darker and intense in the book.

In season 1, I never had a sense that Heleana had any understanding of the visions or dreams she had. It felt like random thoughts popped into her head and she just said whatever she thought they meant. There was an episode where she said the thing about Aemond losing an eye to get a dragon, and Allicent sort of patted her on the head, as though to say, "Yes, dear, whatever you say." I saw a clip yesterday that reminded me that Heleana was played by a younger actress at that point, and I think that portrayal was very different than in this episode. This is all to respond to your analysis that Heleana knew Blood and Cheese were coming. I don't necessarily agree with that, because it doesn't seem like she much understands what she sees or that she sees everything that's going to happen.

@marinabiragova73676 ай бұрын
I think she is cognitive of what she sees, but she isn't taken seriously and may struggle to distinguish between dreams and reality. The way she reacted to seeing intruders and giving up her son seems to support this. That’s why I think that the book version - choosing between two sons wouldn't have worked because in the show's version she anticipated this event. This might also explain why the scene perhaps didn't resonate as strongly as expected with book readers - she appeared rather emotionless throughout the process.

Like in Hulu's Shogun, the old (& lower classes) of real medieval & bronze ages civilizations like Westeros often had little choices in life and very few ways to give back to their communities and were willing to sacrifice themselves for a worthy cause, it was essentially fate more desired than succumbing to sickness & fragility in rags in the streets and being a beggar at the end of your days (if you had no family) - sending old men "Greybeards" to war is interesting in that they were both considered expendable but also a great honor. Experienced and hardened warriors. Worst case scenario you die with honor and are not a burden on living family members, best case scenario you live and got a nice payday at the end of your life for "retirement" whatever that might have looked like.

I think the alteration in the blood and cheese scene stems from the direction they have chosen for Helena's character. If she has already seen this event or aspects of it in the future, her surprise at intruders picking one son over the other wouldn't make sense. Despite this change, I believe they will still lead Helena to the same outcome and explore its impact on her character. I found the acting somewhat disappointing, especially the Stark guy who seemed to try too hard to sound like Jon Snow. The White Worm improved without the accent but still sounded off. Jacaerys' crying didn’t quite land - it felt too forced, although it might be because he was acting alongside Emma D’Arcy, who is a truly gifted actress.

I really hate the decision to have Cole and Alicent sleeping with each other because 1. It reduces Cole to the simp everyone has been painting him as when you could reasonably argue he’s a low born guy who’s had to use honour and duty to get what little he has in life cracking under the pressure of being surrounded by people who make a mockery of everything they supposedly stand for while retaining all their power and status because they’re born into it. And 2. It utterly guts Alicent’s character because she was made sympathetic by the fact that she gave up everything to play the system as it was intended only to be out manuvered by and lose everything to someone who openly pissed on the rules she was forced to play by for decades. Not only is she fucking a Kingsguard but it’s heavily implied that this started while Viserys was alive (bro’s been dead for no more than three weeks and that’s being generous) which is utter trash to say the least. We had 2 complex, multifaceted characters with sympathetic motivations and now we have 2 hypocritical assholes fucking when by all internal logic they should not be, for no reason. Other than that I have no real issues with the episode and actually thinks it’s a really solid start and am eagerly awaiting to see where this goes.

The possibility of Larys becoming Aegon’s Hand is quite frightening actually. They are both demented and together would be beyond malicious.

How many did she kill in the dragons pit? I would consider her a loose cannon.

Thanks for the breakdown and extras. I haven't watched your channel since Better Call Saul as I don't watch those other shows (yet) but will be sure to like and watch each HOTD video you make. @petepeppers1 You seem to have interesting and discretionary tastes, of all the stuff you've reviewed, what 2-3 shows would you recommend I consider other than Breaking bad, better call Saul, and HOTD? Thanks!

Ending scene didn’t make sense. They traveled way too far into the castle without seeing any guards / no guards when Helena ran to Alicante room. Also why did they hold her at knife point and wait for her to answer which one was the boy when they could have checked way easier. Why wohkd they even gamble the idea that she’s lying to them when they can just check??

Great start to S2. I gotta say, though, I don't care for leaving key points totally ambiguous - Aemond informing Alicent of Lucerys's death or Daemon's instruction to "Cheese." It feels like a writer's trick. Too clever by half. A little dialogue or some reactions could have implied the importance without spelling it out, letting us viewers appreciate it going forward. Maybe they'll have made these things clear in future episodes and that'd be alright. But if they leave us dangling that's a low mark in my book.
@tyrant75836 ай бұрын
Not everyone reads the book and most don't spend all day online watching videos knowing what will happen next. So leaving out Daemon's instructions to Cheese was great for the audience because it was a big surprise for them.

I feel like they should have made the scene of blood and chesse more tragic like when they killed jaehaerys, helaena would have screamed NOOOO! Then the scene would cut to alicent and criston cole in bed and alicent say "what was that" or "was that helaena" then the next scene would show Helaena running to her mother's bedroom with jaehaera sobbing and crying and she says "they kill the boy" or "they kill my son"

Anyway Alison why started all this. Stupidity of Alison for letting all this happen. He wasn’t that smart in my opinion. Her father won’t to rule and she obeyed everything that he said.

It’s so good to have a new Pete Peppers video from a show I’m watching, they’re always the best! There were a couple of things I thought stood out to me: The guy playing Aegon is really good, he’s got much more to work with this season and he’s a much better character than I expected, rather than being a one-note mess there’s a lot more going on with him and the guy is really shining in that role straight from the off… Maybe I was expecting too much but I thought Aemond - given how he initially reacted in kind of shock to what his dragon did to his nephew - might have some remorse over it and how what he did meant there was no going back now with the war but he didn’t care at all, it was almost liked he relished it. What a psycho! And speaking of psychos, I think what Daemon did completely undermined Rhaenyra’s loss and the obvious moral high ground the Blacks had, from losing her son, the throne being taken from under her by the Greens the second she lost her father/their king, and how the pain and anguish from those two things led to her losing her child. All the sympathy was and should have been in her camp and then he organizes what turns out to be the murder of a small child and Aegon’s heir. Daemon is such a liability. Doing that too without the queens consent means he clearly undermines her very new rule and she could lose so much support she would have gotten from other houses given Aemond’s kin slaying/envoy slaying.

I thought it was a good episode. I'm one of the filks who has read all the books. I promise we cannot depend on everyone episode to be like the book. The expectation is not real. I learned that from GOT season 4. I felt like the show runners followed all the books until Season 4 and 5 when it started to change.

I am so glad you’re back doing this for season 2! You get major Grand Maester points for knowing and using Emma D’Arcy’s pronouns! Love your style, you’re funny only when it suits your personality and never feels forced into your script like some other youtubers. I really appreciate that, you’re the best!

I’m convinced larys is warging into the rats. And the reason he didn’t see the two killers is because they were the rat catchers and he has to avoid them.
