House of the Menander History and Walk through | Pompeii, Italy | Casa del Menandro

We explore a house named after a greek playwright, with a hoard of buried treasure, frescoes from the trojan war, and possibly owned by a former empress. The house of the Menander is located in Pompeii, Italy and was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. We look at the historical significance of the house, as well as walk through with an emphasis of deciphering the most important pieces within the home, including the fresco that was used to give the house its present name. The house has a number of frescoes depicting the Trojan War focused on the arrival of the Trojan Horse and the sacking of the city of Troy.

Some of the bodies found might have been those of looters, or otherwise of people who took refuge in the house during the final hours when pumice and and hot ash was raining down.

This is awesome. I am worried about the conservation of the frescoes though. Can't they get wet when there's rain and wind? It seems like that would ruin them.

I’m no expert, but I was told once that romans had a method of somehow baking the paint into the walls, making them last longer.

@@TheNightWatcher1385 The paint was applied when the plaster was still slightly damp and was absorbed by the plaster. By the time it had dried fully the paint had become 'fixed' in the hardened surface layer of plaster. This manner of painting is called _fresco_ and is very durable. Painting onto dry plaster is known as a _mural._
