Transcript: "The House Sparrow is considered to be the most widely distributed bird on the planet. It is native to Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. It was also introduced to the Americas, New Zealand and Australia.
In North America it was introduced to several U.S. cities in the 1800s as a way to control pests and then quickly spread across the continent. This move was considered to be a mistake because the House Sparrow is an aggressive bird that will take over the nests of native species such as House Martins and Bluebirds.
These house sparrows have taken over abandoned cliff swallow nests.
The House Sparrow prefers human-affected areas such as urban, suburban and farm environments. It is rarely found in wilderness areas such as woods, grasslands or desert.
These sparrows prefer to eat seeds and grain, but will also feast on flowers and insects.
The House Sparrow is one of only three birds in the U.S. that is not protected by law from hunting. The other two are the Rock Pigeon and European Starling."

My house sparrow was we think rejected by his mother because he has a wing defect so he roams freely hopping about his area in my home (he sticks to the perch and open cage and visits us on the back of the couch where we have washable runners laid down). His favorite foods are tortilla chips and spaghetti noodles but we feed him fresh veggies and bird food and worms every day. He is such a sweetheart and he likes to sit on our heads or shoulders and watch what we are doing. He loved this video (I showed it to him).

Great video! When I was a kid back in 1994, a baby house sparrow fell out of the nest. We took it in and raised it and nursed it back to health, but when it came time to let it go, he wouldn't leave. I think a lot of people don't know is how intelligent these little birds are capable of becoming. His vocabulary alone was crazy - he could mimic more sounds than the parrots in the house could (including catcalls, the dogs, the microwave, squeaky doors, various tunes, and could even speak his name)

I got so busy trying to educate some people that I totally forgot to thank you for posting this video. I appreciate a person such as you who puts the correct information online. I can understand how someone from overseas would like them, being that they're native to their land, but at the same time, I can't sit by and watch the house sparrows kill the nesting bluebirds that come to the boxes I put up for them. The bluebirds belong here; the house sparrows don't.

I am a huge fan of these guys and am surprised to hear that they "abuse" other birds. They certainly proliferate, but frankly they take it on the chin when conflicts arise. I've seen many dead sparrows seemingly eviscerated by other birds, and I have seen Blue Jays steal immature sparrows and pigeons bodily pick them up. Sparrows amuse me because they are so social and have such a wide range of personalities.

I love them and they are so sweet. They will eat and eat as much as you give them and will eat anything grains based including plain rice and pasta. They feed their young insects and help keep down the bug population.

chaldon2view The birds where you live are in their natural habitat with their own native birds.Here we have other songbirds and the sparrows will fight them and sometimes even kill them.The songbird population declines when sparrows are introduced.They also will go into other birds nests,kill the babies and claim it.The same thing goes for European starlings.

It's not completely our fault that house sparrows were introduced in America. These little birds build nest in almost anyplace even in a flower pot. I wouldn't be surprised that they nested in ships' hulls where they stored grain.

From Keith Jones ex-pro drummer, Bude Cornwall. Great little birds (sparrows). Have a lot of different birds here in Bude, blackbirds; jackdaws, robins, starlings, hedge sparrows, sparrow hawks and flying in the sky above us buzzards and of course blue tits. Always enjoyed our little sparrow friends, each year they bring back to our small garden their young. It is great to see them being fed with their little wings flapping. Praise God for his creation and the beauty of nature. God gave us free will to do good. God Bless (K.J.) Psalm 23.

I have a seven year old House Sparrow. Got him on fathers day 2007.He was a drop out or pushed out of the nest. My granddaughter took it home and with lots of T L C gave him to me. He is a true charactar when he out of his cage. His diet consists of whatever it is that we're eating. Loves to take a bath in my hands under running water. Spends a lot of time in his cage talking at/to or screaming at the two mirrors in his cage. Also loves to shred paper--throws out of the cage the pieces he doesn't want. One problem is in Spring, when let out of his cage he goes ballistic and will attack my wife around her face. Haven't figured out yet why he does that. To see him in action go to you-tube-ddhartman1@aol(interview w Chirpy)

I'd never seen them take over swallow nests before, pretty cool. They are adaptive little beasts. The reason I mess with them is because they are invasive, and I don't have to have a permit for research. I'm really interested in reproductive behaviors, so these guys are a great species to work with, since you can tell the male and females apart at a glance.

I provided one more piece of evidence on my channel for you to omit . This time it has alot of numbers for you. Cliff swallows don't come anywhere near our "gardens", based on your argument we shouldn't care right? You can hardly call their habitat restricted if they are linked to humans. That would be similar to saying humans have a restricted habitat. Keep up the good work!

@tobjord It's not about the birds, it's about the species. No, one is blaming the birds. You have to understand that north america has a different ecosystem than europe. Invasive species can be devastating to indigenous populations. Read this, since you seem to be so interested in extinctions and wikipedia: wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Invasive_species#Threat_to_global_biodiversity

You're a cold one. Is there a valley in Antarctica named after you? Humans have covered much of the natural world with concrete and buildings. They have filled the land, oceans and atmosphere with many types of pollution. If we were to - Get out of bird's business - then everyone on the planet would have to leave. Building a few bird houses gives them a much needed home. In Minneapolis, many people plant flower gardens to help the monarch butterflies on their migration. That is awesome!
@NeedsMoreVelociraptors

Sounds like you agree with me based on your last comment, and in this one you proved me right by responding with pure emotion. You suggest that we should kill humans as well just because we control invasive pests. That's insane. Funny though, I am an Army veteran so I guess I did that too. Humans do alot of damage and we have a military and a justice system for them. Until they take humans off the protected species list our hands are tied, sorry.

@alemadrid23 Because it's a non-native invasive species that was introduced to the Americas in the 1800's and displaces native bird populations... Conservation is important. You should go read up on why sparrows are bad.
@yomamab2002
@yomamab2002 14 жыл бұрын
Most birding organizations in the US recommend eliminating house sparrows and starlings. They kill native bird species and take over their nesting places. House sparrows and starlings cause billions of dollars of damage each year contaminating grains. I also want to correct an untruth that was stated here in the comments. House sparrows and starlings most certainly DO inhabit the same areas that a lot of other native birds inhabit.
