Disgrace that this was not in the Main media!!! Thank you for posting. This is remembering those who gave their lives in the war to end all wars. They must be asking what has gone wrong.

They have a ceremony every night at 8pm, not quiet like that one but they have been doing it since WW1 only breaking during WW2 i visited there some years ago from Australia to see my Dads cousin's name on the wall, WW1 soldiers walked through that gate to the front line many never to return, my Dads cousin was last seen falling into a German trench after being shot in the chest, his body was never found.

@@krank8385many Belgians feel it is only just to keep remembering those who died so we can live in freedom. Especially because their sons were back to liberate us in 1944/45. What created a special bond and gratitude. The dedication of those firemen to play the last post stems from those feelings.

Since the reason for this event may not be readily apparent, the following may provide some context. The Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Leper (Ypres), Belgium, was part of a two-day Household Cavalry commemoration marking the centennial of its memorial column, erected and unveiled in Zandvoorde by Field Marshall Haig in May, 1924. He was the brother-in-law of Charles Sackville Pelham Lord Worsley, a 27-year-old lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards whose death while in charge of the machine gun section in Zandwoorde provided inspiration for the column. It memorializes 120 men of the Household Cavalry, who were killed or went missing when the Germans captured the village of Zandvoorde Ridge in October 1914. The weekend remembrance, organized through the efforts of Lord Aster of Hever, Field Marshal Haig's grandson, included ceremonies in Zandvoorde and Ypres. The Household Cavalry were accompanied by their band and by the London Scottish Pipes and Drums and Field Marshall Haig's Pipes & Drums. The Household Cavalry also brought three horses. They appear in the video at the end of the parade; the lead horse and rider are in WWI kit. The Menin Gate was significant to the Household Cavalry's commemoration because inscribed on the walls are the names of those who died without trace at Zandvoorde from the 1st and 2nd Life Guards, part of the Household Cavalry. Similarly there are also the names of the dead never found in Zandvoorde from the Machine Gun section of the Royal Horse Guards (the Blues), a storied antecedent regiment of the Household Cavalry's current Blues and Royals, formed by a merger of The Blues with the 1st (Royal) Dragoons. The anecdote mentioned by one of the speakers refers to the unusual circumstances surrounding the recovery of Lord Worsley's body. It was not found until information about its whereabouts was unexpectedly conveyed through diplomatic channels by the Germans who had buried him and marked his grave with a cross. The land where he was interred was bought by his widow but after her husband's body was exhumed and reburied elsewhere as part of post war centralization efforts, the empty grave became the site for the Household Cavalry memorial column.

Obviously, the Belgians have costly renovations underway. A bit more planning by the British organizers would have been in order with an altar of regimental drums rather than using a pedestrian barrier.

Thank you for the wonderful service. I remember attending one there back in 2011 near ANZAC day and will be back there next year with my wife on her first trip to Europe from Australia. One question. Is the Gate undergoing some restoration works at the moment? It looks like you've screened off a lot of the panels.
