I am saving your channel for future tutorials, as my house is nearing 20 years old. I figure i'll need to know a little bit about a lot of things :)

Thank you very much for your tutorial. This was a weekend project. It required a bit more work than I thought, but it was worth it in the end. You helped me out greatly, and I saved quite a bit of money, even though I had to buy many of the tools you mentioned. I know I will use them again someday elsewhere in the house, so I consider that an investment. Thank you so much for your help!

Came across your video and just noticed it’s 6 years old. I’ve watched a dozen or more videos on how to replace a cracked tile and yours was definitely the best and very helpful. I have a Divosta home that was built 20 years ago in south Florida, West Palm Beach to be exact m. For some reason all of a sudden the tiles started to pop up and after removing the tile some were hollow underneath which caused them to crack when stepped on. Why would this happen? The house is 20 years old and shouldn’t be settling anymore. Some of the thin set was loose and some was attached to the back of the tile. Thanks for the help my friend.

Homes are always shifting a little in many places, I would suspect however that maybe someone has dropped something in that area and it has started a problem, or if its a wood floor maybe you have some rot that is causing the floor to be weak and flexing ?

I also discovered what a racket is the tile business. my floor wasn't grouted, they simply used the thinset to serve as grout, one enormous time saver and trick-of-the-trade I did discover and wholly respect. edit: for spelling

of course that made removing this "grout" impossible, had to purchase a multi-tool and diamond blades, so...but thinset as grout looks fine.

The Back Buttering idea is great. I have an old 1905 house with a slightly sloped kitchen floor. This extra tip will hopefully help keep my tile down. I have a few cracked tile to replace so I'm getting that oscillating tool you showed and thought about getting that Premixed SpectraLock 1 grout .. its $94 but its supposed to perform like Epoxy grout. My grout was coming out and chipping so I'll just redo it all.

To take out the cracked tile, you only need a hammer and small chisel. Break the center of the tile with the hammer to create an edge, use the chisel to fit between the tile and mastic and hit it with the hammer. Large pieces come out easily. THEN you can take out the grout. Keep it simple, don't overthink it.

You can also use a razor knife to break the bond in the grout between tiles. It's quicker than sawing it out and eliminates potential damage from a grout saw. I've used it over and over again when removing a section and have completely eliminated transmission of the crack line to the next tile. It only takes a few passes too. But it will take a few blades if you're doing a lot of tiles.

@@HouseImprovements Would that also apply to a tile that has one open edge not touching another tile? The tile floor was installed on top of a linoleum floor. My thought was if I can cut through the grout and linoleum underneath I could remove it that way and then chip off the cement and linoleum from the tile. Thanks for the reply!

Sometimes you can prevent cracked tiles by using a latex additive instead of water to mix some repair mortar . Mix the mortar and force it into the crack then add mesh tape (cement backer board tape) over the crack and force more mortar into it and smooth it out. after it dries you can kind of sand down the mortar to the tape with a stone rubbing stone. then tile over that using mortar with the additive again.
