Great video! Prior owner of my house had security lights installed all around but the electrician surface mounted rectangular boxes with triple floodlights on top of the vinyl siding and soffits. It looks awful compared with the clean look using the mounting blocks demonstrated in this video. Would like to find some nice looking LED security lights to replace the triple floods while also cleaning up the mountings. Thanks for the video, it's informative, nicely shot and edited.

My concern is when you get a driving angle rain the water would run down behind the siding thru the side of these blocks because at the bott0m there is no way for the water to resurface above the vinyl siding and like in your video keep the exposed wood behind your starter strip wet causing rot. The same concern would be for around the widows and doors with the J molding .

Great video. I was wondering about why you only tape the top edge of the J-blocks? Shouldn't all sides be taped? or is there any harm in taping all sides? Also, shouldn't the faucet have some caulking behind it, between it and the j-block?
@HouseImprovements5 жыл бұрын
you could tape the sides also if you want but leave bottom open just incase some moisture gets in so it can run out. The faucet fits so tight that you couldn't. I had trouble just getting the plastic behind it. If your situation is different go ahead.

how do you stop the water from running under the siding when it gets below the block?
@HouseImprovements6 жыл бұрын
Vinyl siding is not a water proof siding material. If you live in a heavy rain area you can install flashing under the bottom of flange and bring it out over the top of the nailing fin on the nearest row of siding under it
@diggindude16 жыл бұрын
@@HouseImprovements I asked the same question above before I read this comment. I would like you to address this in a video if it wouldnt be too much trouble.
@diggindude16 жыл бұрын
@@HouseImprovements Ok, then this will lead to an answer for the industry. A mounting block SHOULD be made to incorporate into existing siding. The block should have a flashing built it to it, OR there should be an accessory to add to a block for that purpose specifically...Anything less seems a lack of effort by them...
@jut19054 жыл бұрын
I have these universal mounting blocks on my newly sided house with wires sticking out. The contractor did not rewire the outlet or lights. How would recommend I go about that? Do I need to pop of those sections and remount the outlet and clear the hole in the bracket for the outside electrical box and lights?
@HouseImprovements4 жыл бұрын
Most times you can cut the mounting block face to fit the electrical box. Then install the electrical box to the wall and in the mounting block hole. The box should be flush to the face of the block. if you have more questions please use our forum.

Hey Shannon, how to you handle the small gap between the door frame and the light mounting box? This seems like the j channel and the mounting box will not have much room for any siding. Am I correct?
@HouseImprovements5 жыл бұрын
Siding was notched and slid into position . The trim ring on the block comes off so you have more room to get the siding in where you need it. trim then is re installed after completion.

Great video thanks. Have you done any videos on how to do this after the siding has been installed, particularly, Certainteed perfection shingles?
@HouseImprovements4 жыл бұрын
No I have not but you will have to remove the shingles down to the position you want to siding block. If it was regular vinyl siding you can usually just unhook the piece where you want to work and flip it up and install the block. The shingles are too rigid to do that.

Shannon. We are about to do our siding on our house, removing x90. I've purchased all the vinyl and accessories we may need. I just ran into trouble about how to go about siding under our sask power/energy meters. Would you be calling the companies to unscrew them (not the actual pipes). And can I screw into the vinyl to put them back on?
@HouseImprovements5 жыл бұрын
In most cases you can temp. unbolt them from the wall carefully. Slip a piece of plywood behind the mounting area ,cover it with a painted metal or paint the board and remind the meter. Just J around the wood and side up to it.Mounting to the siding directly does not work well since they should be mounted tight and the siding will crush. If you have more questions or would like to see an example please use my forum.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

I'm not understanding how this is waterproof. It seems to me like windblown rain could possibly get into the electrical work. Perhaps when the light is installed there is a gasket between the light base and the metal box? But even then those extension rings added don't seem to be sealed. Again, i don't understand how this is weather-tight. PS -- HouseImprovements is my go-to KZbin channel for anything house related. Thanks for all the great videos.
@HouseImprovements4 жыл бұрын
If your fixture does not come with a gasket you can run a very small bead of caulking around the top half of the base of the fixture.
@kedst20004 жыл бұрын
I had the same concern so I wrap the base of the box where it meets the house with Tyvek tape and did the same at the base of each extension ring. Once the lights were mounted I ran a bead of caulking around the sides and top of the base of light where it contacts the mounting block.

Steve, i know expansion will never realistically be an issue for these blocks, however isnt the common practice to mount with minimal fasteners to allow for expansion/contraction?
@HouseImprovements2 жыл бұрын
You still need enough to keep it on the wall. The holes are slated and you are correct these small pieces will not expand or contract much anyways.

After watching many videos of mounting block installations, I fail to see how water will not make it under the vinyl siding at the bottom of the mounting block.
@HouseImprovements6 жыл бұрын
some water will make its way in there. Vinyl siding is not a water proof siding product. That is why it has drain holes in the bottom edge of every piece. You must have a great installation of the house wrap under siding to help prevent water infiltration into the wall system
@diggindude16 жыл бұрын
@@HouseImprovements I've figured out a way to do it by making flashing from scrap vinyl siding that will return any water getting past the block, to the surface of the next row of siding
@brandon36395 жыл бұрын
@@diggindude1 I was wondering this too. Why would they not build the bottom of the mounting block with a ramp or something that returns the water to outside of the vinyl siding when it comes in from the top around the inside of the u-shape. But like Shannon said, it's not suppose to be totally waterproof and lots of water will shed in behind the siding on the house wrap and out the bottom. Very surprising but what do I know... Off I go to install my mounting block. Thanks so much for the DIY video. Greatly appreciated Shannon!
