The hardest part of using cans of spray foam is that the can has to be held mostly vertical and when close to the top, it can be very challenging. The tube on these things is of limited length and flexibility. I have gone to the hardware store and picked up a piece of clear tubing the same size as the cans tube (heat the new tube in hot water to make it pliable and it will fit over the cans tube. When it cools it is very snug!). This allows me more flexibility to get into those nooks and cranies easier. Also, for this vid you did one then the other. I assume you would normally do all the fitting then go back with the spray foam. Good vid

I've done this a few times, and from watching other videos I did something slightly different. I would leave a bit more of a gap around the foam -- more like 3/8", such that the spray foam can be installed across the entire 2" width of the foam board, giving an even tighter seal. I found that cutting the foam slightly larger like this made installation much much easier as well, although it does end up using a few more cans of spray foam.

When they built my house they had the fiberglass batting in there and I’ve been told that you need to get rid of the fiberglass and put foam in there and then seal with the spray foam around the edges to seal it and that if you didn’t the air leakage through the fiberglass would cause mold and moisture where it’s cold

I'm starting the project to have a finished basement. First step first. I'll start by insulating the rim joist. This video is awesome and gave a clear direction of what to do and how to. The question is also commented in your video. I'm planning to have an unfinished ceiling, so in the video you mentioned that rigid foam is not recommended to be exposure and will not pass code unless we covered with some "material" (min 7:54). What is the material you talk about: R14 roxul insulation? 2. What type brand of foam you re using? Thank you so much for your videos and response.
@HouseImprovements

I'm using XPS foam and Roxul is a rock wool type of insulation that will protect the foam from fire. You could use drywall instead of Roxul but its a lot more work. It would have to be cut to fit and then a fire proof caulking used to seal teh perimeter of each joist bay.

Thank you for your time on preparing the video. I thought insulation is not supposed to be touching furnace ducting at all! Insulations need to have certain clearance from the duct depending on type of the duct, 6" for single layer and 1" for B, eliminating fire hazard and possibility of condensation. What you demonstrated was totally different. Thanks again.

I'm wondering why there are no videos here combining two methods. Use spray foam just to insulate the rim joists and use foam boards to insulate the walls. Is spray foam fireproof? Also, how would you insulate spots when joists are going in parallel to the concrete wall in the basement? Great videos. Thank you for your hard work!

I have an entire playlist of basement finishing and insulating videos:kzbin.info/aero/PLh0KqGKtX4oWUr5nKO6U9y-otNi6OA0ud Most spray foams are not fire proof on their own. Where joists are parallel sometimes you can't even get in there to do anything , but most times what you can do is at least fill that cavity with batt insulation.

Great demo, thanks! Can you use acoustic caulking instead of spray foam to deal around the 2" foam board? I don't see why not, unless the foam is more permanent. I look forward to the day they invent a spray foam that can be delivered with the can in *any* orientation!! In many cases, it's like threading a needle with a sledge hammer or watching a pig on stilts.

By installing the fiberglass batting first, it is not sealed against the warm outside air, which will eventually cause black mold and rotting of the joists. I think it would eliminate this problem if you apply the rigid form, first, seal it, and then add the fiberglass batting if you want more r value. Does that make sense?

Shannon, Thank you so much for the video. I just have some questions: First what state was the house in the video? Second have you seen concrete between the joist much? I am from New Jersey and I have not seen that done before. Last have you ever checked an installation after a couple of years? This is a difficult spot to insulate because if you do not have a weather barrier on the exterior i could see moisture build up. I understand the interior rigid to prevent moisture from moving into the space, but depending on the exterior temperature and the location of the dew point I can see a concern

We have concrete in our rim joist as well. I'm removing the portions that I can access and air/water sealing the exterior with Siga Fentrum tape, which is vapor open. This means when we fill the rim joist with spray foam, the rim joist can still dry to the exterior. (Water doesn't kill buildings unless it is plentiful or if it can't dry out in a short amount of time, so vapor open tape is important here IMO.)

I’m getting ready to do some work to my basement, but we don’t have enough money at this time to do the entire basement in one sitting. So to ensure that the house could be slightly warmer, I was thinking of simply filling up the rim joist with 2” rigid foam boards only, seal it with spray foam, then cover each slot of rim joist with drywall to keep the foam boards protected in the event of a fire. Would this be a good way to go, or would you have a better suggestion? Thanks.

Instead of pushing insulation into the gaps above the foundation, why would you not spray foam the gaps above the foundation wall to stop cold drafts from hitting the bottom of the sub floor (in my area it gets to -40 pre-wind) and making the upstairs floor colder along the wall, as well as keeping insects out of the rim joist area...and then put the styrofoam and/or batts as you have done and then seal as you have done with spray?

Whats your climate like? Here in Canada it can get very cold and NRCAN has advised insulating cast in rim joists with no more than 1" rigid foam. They say this allows controlled heat loss to keep the joist dry and warm, otherwise the cold will creep in the joist behind the insulation making the floor above very cold and also moisture will seep in and condense causing premature rot of the cast in joist.

@KyleMc16
@KyleMc16 4 жыл бұрын
This is obviously late compared to the original comment, but building science says otherwise. In cold climates the hot humid air is inside your house. If you have your air barrier on the rim joist that hot humid air can make it all the way through the bat insulation to the surface of the sealed foam. That sealed foam is in direct contact with the cold outdoors and only R7ish meaning the surface inside the wall will likely be cool. This causes the warm humid air inside to condense on that surface and collect in the rim joist space. Doing it the other way around stops the humid air at a warm surface so that the moisture doesn't condense. The bat insulation and rigid foam still have the same R-value though so you get the same insulating value without the water problems. This argument would probably be reversed in hot and humid climates since the interior of the house will be cool/dry more often that outside, but for cold climates this is the way to build.

I removed all of the packed fiberglass insulation that was packed in there and filled it with spray foam. I caulked around all of the joists where they meet the concrete. I sheeted my entire basement with 1" EPS, including between the joists up to the sub floor. Framed my walls. Added R14 roxul between the studs and the rim joists, and covered everything with 6 mil poly. I spoke to a few spray foaming guys in the city and they say they cover those all the time. I'd say in a more humid climate I would've maybe left them open to breathe, but its pretty dry here, and the basement was previously finished(horribly done). But everything was insulated before and I have absolutely no signs of any rot on my joists. My floor upstairs doesn't seem any colder than what it was previously either. There's so much talk on the internet regarding this, I didn't know what to believe. I think it'll be fine the way I did it tho. That can is Great Stuff foam "Fireblock", which is orange. You use this when you are dealing with penetrations through floors or other areas where you need to use fire blocking of some sort as it has some fire rating. thank you @HouseImprovements! so Roxul, or similar, over rigid foam - left unfinished - could potentially be code compliant where I am in BC, Canada? I am looking to insulate crawlspace walls and joist ends with rigid foam and then ... an easy, cost-effective and code-compliant fire barrier. It is a utility crawl space, and I have no need or desire to finish the space.

I've been in a newly renovated basement where there was batt insulation work silver backing on the wall previously. The framers removed the backing in the rim joist spaces, leaving the insulation exposed. The ceiling is also exposed. I have begun having some breathing issues and I believe it's from the insulation exposure. I don't have the funds or time to add block foam so my question is could/should I cut and remove the batt that is in the rim joists? Or is there a quick, inexpensive way to cover each of these joists? Thanks.
@HouseImprovements

If the ceiling is exposed you can not use rigid foam and leave it exposed as it needs to be covered by a fire resistant material like roux insulation or drywall. If it is batt insulation it should be covered with a poly vapour barrier and then drywall.

If you cover the foam board over with Roxul insulation to bring it up to code for fireproofing, would it not make sense just to use the Roxul insulation or because you're filling in such a deep gap, the method being used in this video will be most efficient with added Roxul for fireproofing?

The key to the 2" foam is that it is sealed and acts as the vapour barrier as well instead of trying to cut and seal poly in every one of the spaces.

@@salvatoresaccoccio2379 From what I am learning, batt doesn't trap moisture so much as create conditions for its presence. Moisture doesn't come from outside but is a consequence of the temperature differential between two spaces creating condensation. The relatively (in comparison to the outside) warm air of the crawl or basement when it comes into contact with the cold air from outside. Condensation results from a differential in evaporation rate between two pockets of air. Colder air has a lower evaporation rate whereas hotter air has a higher evaporation rate (this is where the false saying that warm air has more moisture comes from). Rather than having more moisture, hot air just evaporates water more easily. When a half full cold glass of water forms condensation, it does so ONLY on the glass near the cold water because the cold water reduces the air temperature of the nearby air. It causes the water vapor to condensate because the water molecules cannot evaporate as quickly and coalesce on the surface of the glass. Where this becomes a problem is that fiberglass insulation is a good insulator of heat. It thus will create a temperature differential between either side of the material. This is all well and good until the higher temperature air from one side of the fiberglass comes into contact with the colder air on the other side. Since fiberglass allows air to permeate it , this is possible. The temperature differential from warm air percolating through and around the fiberglass contacting colder air from outside WILL increase risk of condensation and thus form moisture on the the batting. So, it isn't really "trapping" moisture so much as fostering higher concentrations to the point of liquid water even if in minute amounts. The solution is the opposite of what this video recommends. Putting rigid foam insulation against the rim joist FIRST, sealing the edges with spray foam to ensure no air can pass from the conditioned craw/basement to the outside, and THEN optionally installing batting SECOND because the air from either side of the permeable fiberglass will be basically the same temperature because the foam board insulation and spray foam on its edges prevent outside air from being present to create lower temperature air between the either side of the fiberglass. The risk of condensation is low because there is very little variation in air temperature in most situations EXCEPT where the portion around the ductwork is. The duct will get actually quite hot during winter and have a VERY high temperature differential between either side of the batting. NOTE: I am a new homeowner just doing research so take this advice with a grain of salt. From what I am seeing, fiberglass is only ok to use where a vapor barrier against outside air exists to prevent condensation that can result from temperature differentials. So long as your insulation is thick enough (at least 1.5-2 inch rigid) to prevent cold air from getting from one side to the other and spray foam is secure, you should be safe to use batting.

@@jasonwilkins1969 I understand your interpretation. I also believe that there is not one house that doesn’t have some type of problem due to men using science to control an environment.
