Same here. Hated Dirk when he was playing since he was good enough to beat some of the best Spurs teams ever assembled (conversely, no Spurs fan ever really hated Nash for example). But yeah what an amazing player and person who brought the Mavs from an ugly rebuild after losing Kidd, Jackson, and Mashburn to one of the best runs in NBA history from about 2000-2011. I was so happy to see the way he got revenge on Miami and that Game 2 from the 2011 Finals might be my favorite Finals game I have ever seen not involving the Spurs. 2011 Mavs were one of the greatest title runs I have ever seen considering the strength of competition they faced at every round.

At the 2002 basketball wc in Minneapolis Dirk contributed big time for Germanys basketball team to upset New Zealand for third place and took the bronze medal! What a German legend, as a European to be 21 years only playing consistently for one big team in the NBA! The Dallas Mavericks, had a great all time German "Wunderkind 'Legend" he ll be sadly missed! "Detlev Schremp" was the first German in the NBA playing at first for the Seattle Supersonics later on Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers in the past but not as famous and especially as popular as Dirk Nowitzki was playing 21 years for the Dallas Mavericks! If I am wrong here do please fell free to correct me!

Dirk is one of my childhood heroes and to see him honored like this last night made my eyes watery. He changed the game for international players and big men alike. International players were not taken serious at one point in time. No 7 footer shot the ball like him before. But, it's his character and what he did off the court that makes me admire him so much. He stayed loyal to his team and fans, he never gave up and worked hard despite having setbacks early on, helped his community, and did it all while remaining humble and respectful to all. Dirk is not just a legendary ball player - he's a legendary human. He deserves this so much and I'm so happy for him.

41 forever!!! In Germany we have 3 sports legends who have defined their sport and entire generations: Michael Schumacher, Boris Becker and of course Dirk Nowitzki. In a marginal sport in Germany, he made it to one of the best basketball players in the world of all time. Thank you Dirk, you make us very proud! What we Germans, like you Americans, love about him is his modesty and politeness. Believe me, when he's visiting Germany, he moves like your neighbor next door. You would never think that there is an NBA legend standing in front of you. No star - airs, just a great person and role model. 41 forever!!!

What an honour! Dirk is one of my favourite players... A truly legend! ... I remember him at the finals of European National Team Championship in 2005, Belgrade...... Greece - Germany.... He was mainly all the team of Germany.... but the Greek team was much better..... 3 minutes remaining, and the result was obvious... Dirk leaving the court, giving the best for his country.... And a FANTASTIC STANDING OVATION, about 5 minutes, from all the fans in the stadium.... Greeks and Serbs.... recognising the effort and the talent of this GREAT basketball player and athlete.... GREAT MOMENTS OF SPORTSMANSHIP! WHAT A PLAYER!!!

But legend has it that at the basketball wc 2002 in Minneapolis Dirk & team Germany upset hugh favorite New Zealand to take the bronze medal! That really happened! Detlev Schremp "from the Seattle Supersonics was maybe the first German in the NBA but not way as popular as Nowitzki was! Theis, Kleber and Schröder are 3 more Germans performing in the NBA, I don't know if there are more!" Regarding Dennis Schröder especially, who is highly expected to perform good in the NBA and for the German National Basketball team in the future but hasn't shown and prove it yet in my opinion! One of the best European basketball player in the NBA, thank you "German Wunderkind" Dirk Würzburger Nowitzki!

As a MFFL and long-time Dallas resident Dirk has and always will be my favorite athlete! He has done so much for our city and his level of loyalty is unparalleled. If I could to him I would tell him what an inspiration he has been as an athlete but most of all as a human being. One would be hard-pressed to find a more caring and humble person. So thank you Dirk for all that you have done and continue to do. 41 forever!

One of the greatest careers ever!!! Tears in my eyes, watching Dirk start to come up in the game as an absolute monster from 2001-2005, and then watching him get cheated in 2006 and then watching the mavs fall apart in 2007 and then to watch him comeback from it all in 2011… Only one word to describe him, Legendary!!! Thank you Dirk for all the memories as a mavs fan!!! It wasn’t even about wins or losses, or stats or championships, it was that you showed up everyday even when injured, worked hard in the offseasons, never once complained is what we the fans find most inspiring!!!
