I'm seeing tons of pests at multiple nurseries lately. The demand for plants is through the roof and I find the growers are just getting them out the door fast. Always isolate new plants for 1 month !!! I've learned my lesson😭

I’ve had the same thoughts. I’m seeing plants in awful potting medium, covered in pests and somehow that’s more acceptable these days because demand is so high. It’s really a shame, especially since all these new plant parents will be overwhelmed and probably won’t know how to deal with all this.

Thrips has been a constant battle for me. They LOVE my Monstera's though all of them and a few Philo's. I never find Adults only the Larva but the had spread to plants in every room. I've done the alcohol, castille soap and water method but it doesn't seen to work on the Larva. As much as I love natural methods I had to bring out insecticide to kill the eggs. I hope you have better luck than me! Can't wait for an update.

Me too!!! Never seen an adult, only found larva and small white ones! Never found adult thrips! And I also have them in every room! Must have been from the watering can! I had to use real pesticide cuz nothing else was working! So I am using a systemic pesticide to beat the thrips! Cuz I can't deal with them killing all my plants!!! :( I feel your pain!

Did you manage to get rid of them? I think I have the white ones on 1/4-2/4 of my collection. Threw away 6 of my 40 plants :'(. But I only saw maybe 4 adults throughout the past 4 weeks
@jenniferhorton31453 жыл бұрын
@@blonduose I have been doing rounds weekly of treatment with captain Jack's and I also put a systemic in every single plant I own. I have not seen a single thrips for a week or more.... Gunna keep spraying for another two weeks just to be sure! I only had one plant(white fusion calathea) that I had to cut down to the dirt, she had the worst infestation! She's popping new growth and all of it looks healthy! Fingers crossed I beat them! So I'm thinking so far so good!
@jenniferhorton31453 жыл бұрын
@@blonduose I can say alcohol doesn't kill them. I tested 70% on a q tip with the live thrips, I would grab them with the alcohol soaked q tips and they would keep moving around. I also tested insecticidal soap, made from fatty acids, and that killed them right away. But rubbing alcohol did not kill them. Didn't effect them at all! Spinosad worked good, and the systemic has worked good. I've seen dead thrips on the leaves and below the plant on the shelfs the plants r on. So I'm guessing they are the poison and it killed them. I am hoping I have them under control now! I didn't lose a single plant! Thank Goodness!!! That's my update! :)

Hey! Good to hear your new job is going well. We just had an offer on a new home accepted. One reason I love Sansevierias and Philodendrons so much is they tolerate periods of neglect really well. My tropicals came inside about a month ago, but we just brought the snake plants (I have 30+ varieties) in this week. I turned around and realized I missed a watering on my Adansonii...yellow leaves galore. Oh well it will recover. We are human and our lives get complicated. Meanwhile, my neighborhood is crazy with spider mites. I am considering biological release in the home. Meanwhile I use alcohol sprays between Neem oil applications and lots of showering of plants. Thanks for your interest in us. Be well and happy growing.

Hello; I see mosquito bits are popular in USA. You mentioned in the video about adjusting, controlling fungus gnats. I had a massive infestation in my collection during winter time and I tried many things. If you want to eradicate the whole population I would recommend to use beneficial nematodes. They resolved my fungus gnat problem. I am currently testing beneficial nematodes against thrips.What people don’t remember they also live in soil. So beneficial nematodes eat them also in soil not only on leaves and steams. Beneficial nematodes are also safe for our environment.

Hi, thanks for keeping it real with pests. I just want to say that thrips has a lifecycle that include living in the substrate that the plant is planted in. So the reason it comes back is usually because the thrips lives in the substrate also, not just on the leaf. So the best way is to change the substrate. I got thrips and been battling it for months. I changed to using blue raid and now the thrips is gone, sprayed my intire apartment three times and now I can't find any thrips. Good luck ☺️

It not always looks like powder, depending on the type of begonia it can also looks like rust that is eating the leaf, like a bit of dehydration. Ugh, the worst thing about owing a bunch of plants are the pests! I am dealing with thrips (they came in an online order), spider mites and fungus gnats. The spider mites and gnats were in several areas of my house because I didn't notice them in time. I resorted to using lacewing larvae and eggs to help with the problem. First, I got 400 lacewing larvae and put them on my plants, focusing on the ones with the pests and those close to them. Then I got 5000 eggs, bi weekly, in three shipments, to kill any remaining bugs and newly hatched bugs. I tried to put some eggs on every single plant. I hate the way my plants look after putting the eggs on them because they come in rice hulls and you have to spray the leaves with water and put them on the leaves, not the dirt, and it just looks messy. I'm hoping this will take care of the bulk of the problem and when I'm done with the eggs, I'll just wash my plants off and use sprays to treat those that are still infected or get infected. In a perfect world we wouldn't have to deal with this, but unfortunately, like you said, this is the reality of owing a bunch plants. I know it sounds gross to bring bugs into your house, but I have over 200 plants and this was my last resort.

Yes they move quickly, most fly. The dish soap spray shouldn't be done while the plant is in direct sunlight. Also, if you add too much soap it will coat the leaves. I have a Joya with mealy bugs and indoor fruit trees that are getting the problem. How can I get rid of this and should I be watering from the bottom. For the fruit trees?

Mealy bugs die with alcohol & water mixture. I always recommend unpotting, rinsing the plant and roots, spray the plant with alcohol and water mixture, sanitize the pot, and repot with fresh soil! Systemic granules also work well

Girl, I would be crying. Having to cut back all those expensive plants is disheartening. I hope they bounce back.

Can you just squish with fingers the mealybugs or, doing this, they can lay eggs?

I don't think smashing thwm releases eggs but I'm not 100% sure. I've never tried 😊

Try to leave spaces between your other healthy plants. Thrips do have wings, but they can only short distance fly, its more like a jump. They lay eggs in soil, stem and leaf. Thrips are asexual, so do they reproduce eggs without a male or female. That's why every thrip eleminated is a win. Good luck you will need it.

Have you had spidermites?
@PeacefulPlanting-Sydnee3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I just sprayed the plant off with soapy water 1-2x per week. Thanks for watching 🌿

Unfortunately alcohol will not eradicate thrips.

Alcohol kills thrips and their eggs. I plan on also getting a systemic insecticide. Thanks for watching 🌿
