In this video I want to share with you my five-year-old Anthurium houseplant, it's a hardy indoor plant from the tropics of South America, in its native habitat it is Epiphytic so grows in trees and gets moisture and nutrients from the air around it.
Anthurium is also known by other names such as Tail Flower, Flamingo Lily or Flamingo Flower, these are all nicknames of the Anthurium plant.
It's relatively easy to look after, as long as you keep it away from harsh direct sunlight it will tolerate a wide range of environment from shade to bright rooms, it will tolerate drying out from time to time and only really dislike being left in wet soil which is the same for many houseplants.
Anthurium will bloom prolifically through the year without the need for much feeding, maybe once or twice in the active growing season of Spring and Summer.
What you would expect are the flowers are in fact just modified leaves and the flowers are so tiny that can hardly be seen growing from the spike at the centre.
If you keep an Anthurium at home let me know in the comments what you think of it.

Thank you so much. I bought a lovely albeit small Anthurium plant about a year ago. It has really taken off beautifully. It’s growing so fast and so big that I know it needs to be repotted. But I didn’t know if I could do it while it was giving me the beautiful red “flowers” that I now know are leaves thanks to you. It’s also looking like it needed to be broken up into separate plants as it looks very much like the one in your video. You have answered my questions and now I feel completely confident that I can add some more beauty to the rest of my house. Instead of just in my dining area lol! I just discovered a little over a year ago that I really love houseplants and that I am pretty good at caring for them. If I do say so myself 😁Imagine that me learning how to care for plants and learning how to sew at age 58! It’s wonderful life…..at any age 🦋

Hey 👋🏼 thank you for this video. I have an anthurium cocos in white, she is like 10 years old now and the legs (are they called legs? 🤔) are like 30cm high and I want to split the 🪴 and didn’t know how to do that properly. I really liked your video especially that you share with us exactly how to multiply an anthurium... however, if I may ask, please... there are just some parts where it seems the camera is just a bit too far and so it's not very easy to see. Like as an e.g., if I may, a closer view when you separated 1 with the roots ... :-) But, really, thank you. I did appreciate all the knowledge you have shared. & I'm going to be doing my anthurium now (nervous, 1st time I'm multiply a plant like this) - hope I don't ruin / worse kill my darling plant.

@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
I love Plumeria! We can't grow them in the UK unfortunatley although I did manage to get a branch to flower once in a pot at the end of a long hot summer but it took me about three years to achieve! Such amazing scent from the flowers.So glad you are enjoying the videos, I repot when the plants need it really, if the roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot it's a good sign that they may need a bigger pot, but best to look up on Google for each plant as some plants flower best if kept in smaller pots. Orchid do have similar requirements to anthuriums you're right as they are both tropical epiphytes. I think we are very lucky to have our gardens during these diffucult times, stay safe. Andy

My Anthurium barely survived me being out of town for 2 weeks… I think because I’m in California and didn’t have the AC going it may have gotten too hot in my apartment. Also, I can’t seem to find somewhere for it that doesn’t burn the leaves. It doesn’t get much direct light at all where it’s at. I feel like the next step is putting it in my closet and shutting the door! Thanks for making this video, it was very informative! 🫶🏻🌷

Thank you! I appeciate you watching and commenting! :-) I really is peronal preferance I think with Epiphytes, they don't "need" the soil the same way that normal plants do but it still helps to anchor the plant in the pot and it doesn't make much difference either way in my oppinion. If you see them being sold in the UK they are always planted in soil.

what is considered indirect light ? i am a very beginner. my kids brought me this plant for mother’s day. my plant looks droopy and few brown spots are forming. my house is on the darker side. the biggest area is in the early morning in the kitchen window. my window is south form. i move the plant at night near the kitchen window. then move it back to where i put it in the living room to look nice. i want more plants to clean the air in my home and look pretty.
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
So on a window sill where the sun light directly hits the leaves is direct light, further back around a windw where it gets plenty of daylight but the sun does not directly shine on the leaves is classed as indirect, futher in the back of a room where the light doesn't get to would be considered a shady area. Your Anthurium would be most happy with p[lenty of indirect light close to a window but on where the sun can scortch the leaves.

Hi Marta, they will naturrally grow towards your light source, so it's probably growing towards the window, you can balance this by rotating the plant round once per week and it should straighten up and start to grow in the other direction, if you keep rotating it each week it should grow more balanced.

Can u plz tell me why are the leaves of my anthurium getting brown even though I've kept it under indirect sun?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 4 жыл бұрын
It can be a number of reasons, incorrect watering can cause it, are you leaving it wet all the time? Let it dry out in-between watering, is it dry for too.long? Increase watering frequency or volume. Sometimes it's just that the leaf is old and will go brown and fall off. This is the normal lifecycle of the plant to drop old leaves and grow new ones. Hopefully something to think about.

All you can do is take it out of the direct sun and give it some time, keep watering as normal and hopefully it will grow more leaves to replace the burnt ones, don't cut the burnt ones off, if there is still some green on them they may still be able to produce energy for the plant. Good luck. Andy

I don't think so, the rhizome is still clear of the soil, I'm no expert so if you have some knowledge that they need to be planted higher out of the soil then normal then I'm happy to learn something new.

Is there a anthurium that has leaves that look like dieffenbachia? I know they are closely related but I have a anthurium that has aerial Roots thick green clumps of stems leaves that resemble dieffenbachia but it is not Dumbcane... the stems have aerial Roots and their growing in a clump like fashion I would bet a million dollars it's not dieffenbachia unlike any one I've ever seen However it has huge arrows head leaves with white splash in the middle veins just like classic dumbcane...which I'm dumbfounded...lol no pun intended

How do you make a plant food?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
In most cases it is easier to buy plant food in liquid form from a store, you then addit to water and water your plants with it once per month in the growing season. There are some plants that you can cut and put into water for a few months that can act as a plant food but I would need to properly research and make a separate video about that I think.

@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
It can be for a variety of reasons Robin, it might be too much or too little light? is it near a very sunny window that gets midday sun? This would also scortch the leaves and make them brown in places, or maybe not enough light, either way, try moving to a new location, if it's really harsh sun try a different window that doesn't get the direct sun, or if it's too little try a slightly bright spot. Good luck.

Mine has a few brown on the leaves but I am afraid to cut them because I feel like I’m going to kill it. My husband calls me the plant killer because every plant I touch dies. But I’ve had my anthurium almost 2 years and it’s doing well. I haven’t transplanted it or nothing because I’m afraid.
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Haha! I'm sure you're ot the plant killer! It can just take a bit of time to learn what a plant needs, each one is different, you will be fine to cut off a leaef that has gone brown, but its more important to figure out why the leaf turned brown, not enough water? too much direct sun on the leaves? Just keep an eye on the other leaves and see how it goes.

@@HouseplantHacks thanks for responding. I have it on the dining table. It doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight. It gets mostly indirect sunlight. I’ve had it for almost 2 years. I repotted it. I bought some shears and I cut all the brown leaves. I water it’s once a week. I live in Connecticut, so it’s not so warm now. I repotted it in a much much larger pot, I added some potting soil. It’s been a week and it haven’t died, yet. We’ll see. I am the plant killer because I purchased a mini rose and it died one week later. It dried out so fast and I didn’t know that. When I purchased it, it was so soggy, so I felt like I didn’t need to water it. All the roses fell off and it’s almost sticks now. I don’t think it stands a chance. I am not a good plant parent. Also what soil do I get? And what do you call the fertilizer? I am completely new to house plants
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Watering is something that can be learned from experience, it will vary massivly depending on whwre you live in the world, where you keep it in the house and what time of year it is, so I can't tell you once a week or something like that, you need to get used to what it looks like when it needs watering, the pot will be noticably lighter when it's dried out, the leaves may start to droop a little. Put your fingert in the side of the soil, can you feel moisure in the soil, if yes it's still ok, you need to let ethe soil; dry a little inbetween watering, but not dry out completely, maybe the top inch of the soil becomes dry and you can water again. These plants are very tolerant so if your leaves are browig it may be due to sun scortching of the leaves rather than under watering, do you have it in direct sinlight? if so move it away from the direct sun, it needs well lit conditions but direct sun will scorch the leaves. Good luck
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Any general-purpose soil is fine, these plants are not picky, general-purpose liquid houseplant feed is fine, but it doesn't need much if you are putting new soil in you won't need to feed it for a few months as the soil will already have nutrients. You can feed it once or twice in the summer and that's enough.

@@HouseplantHacks It is not in any sunlight. It is in the house due to snow and ice cold weather outside. It is winter now. The plant is beautiful. I got it in September when it was Autumn. I have 8 flowers and about 20 leaves. Is it better to replant into a bigger pot? It is a small plastic pot or does the size of the pots not really matter?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
@@CR-lz6tt Yes, the plant can outgrow the pot eventually but winter isn't the best time to do it, I would just weep it watered in a bright spot for the winter and then take a look once the weather improves, if the pot has more roots and little space for compost then it could probably do with a bigger pot, there is no rush just now though as it won't hurt it for a few months even if it does need it.
