these are very popular porch plants here in New England... you'll see a lot of porches with these hanging in every opening, and they're huge and lush. I think a lot of people have gotten to the point where they sort of treat them as annuals... you can get them pretty cheaply in hanging baskets in the spring, so they buy them then, keep them all summer, and start over again in the spring rather than try to overwinter them. My grandmother kept hers alive all winter and put them back out on her porch every summer, and I could never believe how huge they got.

It's actually not a bad idea if they aren't too expensive and you want the look of a big esablished fern. Some people aren't that interested / don't have time to keep the plants in perfect condition but want the look of them, in thgis case I don't see why you can't treat them like annuals, it's certainly a lot less hassle. Thanks for your comment, sounds like your Grandmother was a master of the green arts! :-)

Love ferns. Have them everywhere inside and outside. All sorts of ferns. But I have lost the count of how many Boston ferns have died in my house. I do not think I can risk to kill another one. I am giving up. I keep most of my house plants including ferns outside in summer in a bright but shady yard, water them with collected rain water and feed them. Looks like they love it. But I was not sure if I that is a right thing to do. Thank you for your always so useful tips! ❤

@@HouseplantHacks The yard is sheltered and has its own microclimate. It is also my "Fernery", my mini jungle, kitchen garden and potting space. It is not quite perfect yet. Some plants are going there to die. And vine weevil loves the spot too. It would be nice if you could do the talk about that little devil, how to get rid of him or his grubs. Perhaps something less expensive and more available than Nematodes? ❤

Ferns are a favourite of mine , especially the Boston . No matter where I had mine it struggled even though I had 70% humidity in winter. I did exactly what you just said Andy and put mine outside for the summer, plus a few other struggling plants . It’s grown back amazingly. Only problem is bringing them back inside with spiders and insects in the pot . What do you do about that ? I planned to re pot them all before I bring them in .

I hadn't thought too much about that to be honest, I'm usually concerned about bringing in snails or slugs and just take some time to look carefully through them, if there any stow aways they will probably jump ship before too long hopefully.

I potted these ferns five year back and repotted once.Except watering once in 2-3 days, did nothing.Left them in shade outside the home.Plastic pots are cracking but ferns are thriving(From India, tropical climate)

Awesome, sounds like they are very happy!

@@HouseplantHacks To be truthful,I left them to the nature. They partly dried up in summer, sprouted in rainy season. Not really thought about their shape and shine.Plants kept indoors need manicured look.
