Being able to beat a Touhou-game on Hard means you put the time in. Good stuff. I wonder if she has played any more recent STG, like 'Zero Ranger'? That'd be cool to see!
I can do every game except for 15 on normal (legacy obvi, you can't really fail pointdevice) but I still hit a wall on hard for all the games after over 5 years of playing. Marine's a total unit

First time seeing this game, how can you read those moves?

Everything in the run is predictable to a certain extent. With enough practice (150 hours?) on Lunatic, you know the best place to be at any given moment to minimize threat / maximize gains, you have a very good understanding on how to solve each bullet pattern, you have micro-dodged enough bullets to be intimately familar with your hitbox, you know which parts give you the most trouble and when you need to bomb. At that point, clearing the game becomes a 50-minute zen-like brain exercise. A pretty tiring one, for me at least. Afterwards, you can go study top players' replays to see their insane pattern solutions and scoring strategies, and realize how much room for improvement you still have :) I can sort-of compare the process to the Undertale Sans battle. If you've watched any of the endurance streams, it takes around 8 hours of training to just barely clear it, and it follows the same pattern of repetition, memorization, pattern recognition and planning. Another side example I can think of is Super Hexagon, which runs too fast for conscious decision-making. There, you first need to wait for your brain to get used to processing the spinning visuals, and then practice enough for your patten recognition and response to become sub-conscious. At that point, clearing the game becomes, again, a several-minute zen-like brain exercise.

@@TheTsuyuki I could not play Touhou just by sight-reading. Not if I wanted to have a good time and not burn out, anyway. Reimu's homing shots kinda mitigate it, but for characters that can only shoot straight up, if they're not in the right spot when enemies come in, it's too late. The entire screen could get covered with a dynamically generated bullet pattern, requiring conscious micro-dodging (and the pattern might not even be dodgeable). My brain would not have a moment to rest and I would have to go into the stage's boss fight with no break. Of course, there are pacifist/timeout runs, which experience the full extent of the game's bullet hell, but obviously for them the memorization aspect is even more significant. Oh, and the EX stages are memorization marathons. At least that's my experience. For the Undertale example, from what you wrote, you seem to not have experienced it yourself. Bullet hell training does not provide an advantage in that sequence since it plays more like a precision sudden death platformer. (my data point: I used to casually clear Lunatic on almost all the touhou games but it still took me around 8 hours to get the first clear). I do not believe the battle can be cleared purely by sight reading. My point in that section was that the process is the same as in touhou: through practice and repetition, you gain enough familiarity with each sequence, so that you can clear it and transition to the next one predictably and with minimal effort. You work towards minimizing the overall number of mistakes and finding ways to improve your odds. Keep it up and eventually you will be able to perform the full sequence before you run out of lives.
