Housing crisis in Spain as rental prices soar

Rental prices in Spain have gone up around 20% in the past year. And with eight out of 10 Spaniards under 35 forced to live with their parents, there are growing calls for affordable housing. Jaime Velazquez reports.

It is for foreign investors, not people who have paid taxes their whole life in Spain

If there's vacant houses there needs to be a vacancy housing tax to deter landlord from holding empty properties limiting supply. Also right now while I'm renting the the 2% rental cap is great for my personal situation trying to forcefully control market prices has historically never played out well in the long term. Look at USA's rent control properties falling into disrepair.

The landlord is holding empty properties because they're awaiting renovation or demolition or that's actually more profitable than renting to a bad tenant who cannot be legally evicted in a timely manner.

@@shauncameron8390 don’t disagree with doing that there just needs to be a time limit. E.g. after 1 year vacant landlords pay a tax based on property value. Also should mention individual landlords are less of the issue here. It’s companies that have own multiple properties which are the players more inclined to have the cashflow and safety net to hold a property vacant for an extended period.

Not in Seattle. We have a good system with low-income affordable housing. It's a Law in Seattle for developers (foreigners or not) that want to invest in real estate and build these nice buildings and don't accept low-income residence in your fancy new building then the developers must put money back into the low-income affordable housing cause. I'm low-income and born and raised in Seattle. Gentrification happens. Cities grow and change. Just take care of the citizens before you make a buck. Take care of home. I think that's why tourists are getting hated though.

Prediction: Valencia after Barcelona will be the next place to have increased costs for accommodation. It’s happening now… Barcelona sold its (out its…) popularity by using tourism for many years. Valencia (lived for so long in its shadow, is now experiencing that boom and fall out from Barcelona’s downfall from overkill with its policy to allow too many cruise ships and AirBnB style apartments…) is next because it is still cheaper than most cities in Spain. It even has with its own beaches. More than Barcelona. It has a port for commercial ships and private boats. It is situated between Alicante, Barcelona and Madrid with excellent connections by express train and has 97% days per year of sunshine. A riverbed running through the city which is a converted park or ‘’el pulmón de la cuidad’’ and is a flat city which makes walking ( you can walk around the city easily as it is no it extensive at all ) and cycling as well as the use of electric scooters ideal. Although the local population is becoming increasingly frustrated with the local government’s lack of wisdom towards safety where people are concerned as it can be dangerous on the cycle paths which cross the city and make it practical to not use a car there in Valencia, although some refuse to What a pity this boom is going to happen and ruin what was a quiet secret. As the french say…Asi es la vida, in Spanish, por supuesto…Of course. Thanks to the British press voting it number one city by the coast to visit in 2023, it will be overrun sooner than later. Glad i got to see it before the boom and Barcelona as well.

If only there was a way to share the housing cost..... if only there were other people in your situation, perhaps friends or relatives, or a lover perhaps that would be willing to share a house with you... IF ONLY SUCH A SOLUTION EXISTED :( Sadly... that doesn't exist and she must continue to suffer in her flat, by her self. :( If anyone can think of a solution, please let me know. /end of sarcasm
