I grew up in Houston during this time. I never realized that Warren Moon was not only a great QB but also a greater man. He kept his head throughout and never lost it publicly even though he would have been justified in doing so. Neither the Oilers nor the city deserved him. Wherever he is and whatever he's doing, I hope he's successful and content!

If his baby or wife had complications or something it would be one thing but there is no mention of that. That player is selfish. I do not mind letting a player go witness their babies birth but if mom and baby are said to be healthy after the birth go do your job. If I was his coach or teammate I would have lost respect for him.

The one thing that runs through the whole sad and disappointing history of the Houston Oilers was Bud Adams, the trashiest piece of human garbage in Houston history. The story fails to mention that Adams had forced Houston to come up with the money for a major renovation of the Astrodome a few years before, at a time when the crash of the oil boom had local government gasping for air. A poll by a local politician who wanted to know if there would be political problems letting the Oilers leave found that only 6% of Houstonians had a positive opinion of Bud Adams. The general consensus was, good riddance.

I am in TN and I can't stand Bud Adams. He conned the dumb fans of TN to use taxpayer funds to build a stadium. Hell, Adams had enough money to build the stadium on his own, but he wanted the public to do it. This is the problem I have with capitalism. You really have to feel for Jack Pardee. A football lifer who had a fine football mind, was a good guy, was a decent enough coach. But when you throw in a borderline sociopath like Ryan.... There are a very few people in the world who have such great leadership skills they can deal with a cancer like that and somehow keep the train on the tracks. Pardee was not one of them.

I was such a diehard Oilers fan during this time. I remember every one of these games during this season. I remember going to school each week being so excited of the winning streak they were on talking football with friends. When they lost to Kansas City in the playoffs, I was devastated. Probably even more devastated than the Buffalo comeback the year prior because I truly thought that 93 team was more talented than that 92 team. It just felt so wrong for them to go out like that. Side note: it was a weird feeling seeing the Titans in Oilers gear last week. Brought back memories of another time.

I've been watching the NFL since 1978. Ive been a Dallas fan since then. So i remember a lot about the Houston Oilers. Known as the HOUSE OF PAIN, The inventors of the Run and Shoot. That defense was the Eagles Defense when Buddy got there. With That defense and high-powered offense, it made them extremely dangerous each and every week. Its a ashame their team is gone. I miss the tradition of the NFL. most of it is gone.

Oilers didn't invent run and shoot. It was run at high schools and colleges, and introduced at the pro level in the USFL. It was a gimmick that never won anything at a pro level.

The Oilers (during ‘87-‘93) were one of the most talented teams to never reach a Super Bowl. People have to remember, the NFC was the superior conference at that time , the AFC was second, it was Buffalo during their run to 4 in a row in the ‘90s and everyone was basically far behind them, and so the fact that the Oilers never got to a Super Bowl, let alone an AFC championship game during that span is one of the most underachieving things ever.

I’m not trying to be argumentative at all but I just don’t agree. I lived through that era as a teenager and followed the NFL pretty seriously with all the football cards which was popular at the time. No one cared about Houston. All the talk was about the 49ers and some people liked the Redskins, Giants, Broncos, and Cowboys. The Bills were obviously talented but few kids liked them. The Oilers were just thought of that gimmicky above average team that passed all the time. Moon, Givins, Jeffries were the offense (with Munchak and Matthews leading the way). Then the defense was always considered the liability with a few decent players like Sean Jones and Lathon. You knew you could beat them but you can’t overlook them or you’ll be sorry.

The fatal flaw of the 46 defense: a high powered passing offense. The only loss in the Bears 1985 season was to the Dolphins, who had a high powered passing offense. One would think Buddy wouldn't want to talk crap on the "Run N' Shoot" since it was a high powered passing offense that was going to burn it, and even if they got past KC in the playoffs, they were still going to have to face Buffalo, who would gash the 46 easily.

The Dolphins played a 3WR offense, with Nat Moore as the third receiver. Add to that the reigning NFL MVP at the time, Dan Marino, with his famed quick release, plus some luck, and the end result was that Miami scored 31 points by halftime. Belichick would later mention that Buddy’s Eagles would get torn apart by Gibbs’s Redskins, who also played three WRs.

I'm with ya, JB. I grew up in South Texas. As a youngster I was a die-hard Oiler fan. In each of the '89, '90 and '91 seasons I saw one Oiler home game with friends and family. I was at the 1991 home game v Pittsburgh when Houston clinched the AFC Central title.

I visited Houston and when people there found out I was from Pittsburgh my money wasn't any good and people told me if the Oilers don't make it, we all hope the Steelers do. Basically, this was Buddy Ryan: If the head coach hired him (Weeb Ewbank-Jets; Bud Grant- Vikings; Neill Armstrong-Bears), Ryan would behave and not divide the team. If someone else (George Halas- Bears; Bud Adams-Oilers) went over the head coach (Mike Ditka-Bears; Jack Pardee-Oilers) and hired him, Ryan would make the defense HIS TEAM, split the roster, and give the head coach the middle finger--figuratively AND literally.

The AFC Division was crazy loaded with Talent Teams in the 90's and Houston Oilers was one of them, great team from the mid 80's coming into 90's. His arrogance ruined the Bears dominance in the 80s when he left after the 85 season. He went to Philadelphia with this dominant defensive mentality, but it wasn't until the year after he left when the Philadelphia Eagles defense became so dominant under Bud Carson (defensive coordinator for Pittsburgh for 2 SB & LA Rams in 70-80s) that they still hold the NFL record for allowed yards in a season (3549) in a 16-game season! Screw Buddy Ryan; at least Gilbride went on to win 2 more SBs over a dynasty team both times!

They had to beat the Giants in the last game just to clinch the NFC East and home field throughout the playoffs. Had they lost, they’re hosting Minnesota in the wild card and then would have to win over the 49ers in San Francisco. Plus, the Oilers were the hottest team entering the playoffs. If you build off a momentum like the Oilers had and add two more wins, that team could’ve won the whole thing and gotten by Dallas.

@KWCline91 well obviously I think you forget just HOW good that era of the dallas cowboys were.. coming off a SB IN 92 they open up with back to back losses because of Emmitts hold which every one knows but then he he signs a contract and they win 7 straight games followed by back to back losses finishing out on a 5 game winning streak. So if you want to talk about "momentum" being the reason for beating Dallas, Dallas gad all the momentum in the world. They barely beat the Giants because Emmitt separated his shoulder early in the second quarter on a 40 yard run. Dallas was supremely well coached.. the oilers were a walking dysfunctional organization who clearly couldn't win the big one nor could they put a team away after being up.. nothing in that documentary would ever give me a reason to think j Houston would ever beat Dallas... You do not need to be a good head coach or teammate to be a good coach in the NFL. If you are really good at being and OC or DC many will not care you were fired as a head coach every single time. If you took a list of some of the best OC and DC in NFL history who never had real success as a HC it does not take away from how good they were at OC or DC. As for being a good teammate Buddy as a DC in some ways brought out more from the offense of his own teams by constantly provoking them and challenging them. Some people can positively respond to that and others obviously will not or it will only cause unnecessary problems. I have seen the Raiders defense look bad for around 20 years and someone as abrasive as Buddy would have had a better shot to fix those defenses compared to what we got instead.

That was their one last shot to put something as a championship run. They had their best shot in 1991 when they had the Broncos 2 times on 4th down and Elway converted in the divisional round. The next year was the 35-3 debacle. Then in 93 they went all in for Buddy Ryan to fire up the defense and when they went down 1-4 for the season, it looked that it was the last gasp for the Moon Oilers. Well they went won 12 straight. They had a 10-0 lead against the Chiefs who they crushed during the season. Then the offense stalled and the defense gave up big plays and by the time the Oilers tried to make the comeback it was over. It was all over for the Pardee Oilers because Moon was released and went onto Minnesota. Buddy Ryan went to Arizona as the head coach. Maybe the Oilers would have given the Cowboys a tougher game than what the Bills did. We will never know.

The next in 1994 the Oilers against the Cowboys in Texas Stadium only lost by a touchdown and held Dallas in check for most of the game without Warren Moon as QB. The Oilers were terrible that season, but they made it tough for the Cowboys. Still, Dallas got it done and won 3 Super Bowls out of 4 years. The Oilers just choked when they had a lead. Against the Broncos, they had a 21-3 lead and when it was 24-23 the Oilers got the ball down to the 2 and Elway over came 2 4th downs to get the Broncos into field goal range. That's why The Cowboys were the team of the 90's and the Oilers were a bunch of what could have been.

@crosstatt7441 I never really despised him for relocating the team because he was the owner and could do whatever he wanted to do so. It's just that he didn't give the City of Houston and its fans enough time to come up with the money to make renovations to the Astrodome - which was renovated just a few years before by the expansion of seating. He was on local TV saying how he wanted to keep the team in Houston and then the very next day, he announced the relocation. It really was a sad day for us Oilers fans once we found out the team was leaving town for good.
