When Houston needed something, they trusted their defense, rebounding, and timely shooting. Illinois was hoping for Kofi to either beat 2 or 3 players inside or somehow find a teammate in traffic, or have streaky shooters make desperation 3's.

Agree and disagree. I had little faith Illinois would even advance in round 1 let alone round 2. They did face a long season of injuries so chemistry never really happened but I'll say this. The talent is there for the taking. This team can be good if maturity issues and selfish play is fixed. Maybe something next year will happen

As a life long Illinois fan, this team still hasn’t accomplished anything in March since the Bill Self era. ‘05 was coached by Weber, but that team’s core was Self’s recruits. Weber couldn’t ever win much with his guys at Illinois. Besides the recent Big 10 titles, Underwood hasn’t accomplished anything, yet. I don’t want to hear anymore about those Big 10 championships when we still can’t make it past the first weekend. Back to back years Illinois has had a Top 5 seed and lost due to being out coached and outplayed. Underwood’s ability to win in March won’t be questioned anymore until he breaks that narrative. Hopefully, it’s next year. Go Illini! I-L-L

Illinois got away from what makes them successful. Trent plays great off the ball, but became the primary ball handler. Williams is a great defender off the bench. These guys where asked to do to much. Let Andre run the point, and Trent play off the ball. Williams should of come off the bench, and Cofi always played within the flow of the offense. We stopped moving the ball and just expected Cofi to take over. Certainly not the way Illinois has been playing, they just lost their way down the stretch. And it's a shame, because this team had the talent to make a serious run

They’ll be fine. Houston has to be ready to play a team that doesn’t live and die by the three and puts up 85 on anyone. Arizona is better offensively by a long shot and defensively than Illinois. If Houston expects a d3 effort that they got from Illinois they’ll be in trouble. It’ll be a good game. But Arizona I got Arizona by 12.

Illinois problem is PG Curbelo never know what he's going to do. Needs a pure point guard ,that makes quality decisions. Needs athletic forwards , that can run and shot. Kofi effect works in the Big Ten play not in the NCAA. And the mental mistakes , the Illini make is unreal.

Another flop by Illini. Houston also had problems (they lost their 2 best scorers, so no gripes about Jake!). Had Illini earned a higher seed, they might have played Iowa St and reached Sweet 16. Wisconsin, which beat Purdue twice, could have hung with Houston. But who expected Illini to tie late in 2nd half? Melendez showed the most natural basketball feel on the court.. Houston missed lots of shots, but the Illini were worse.. I think Curbello deserved 2nd half action. Same for Hawkins--yanked for helping rival on the floor(!?) If Houston wins the title, Illinois' early departure will seem more plausible.

Not an Illini fan but, if Cockburn was assaulted like he was on the street Houston players would have been arrested for assault and battery. That was very poor reffing. At times Cockburn had 1 guy on his back and another clubbing BOTH of his arms and nothing was called.
