So happy to finally be back! After graduating 3 weeks ago, I'm ready to spend my gap year working on several huge new videos, from an analysis of Disney theme park techniques in Zelda: Breath of the Wild to finishing my short film, Paradoxical. Who's your favorite Spider-Verse, uh, Spider-Person? Lemme know below. If you liked the video, consider sharing with somebody who might also enjoy it! I have a real soft spot for Noir though.

The movie improved Miles as a character and inproved his origin story. Along with giving him a different personality. In the comics he was just black Peter Parker. Im glad they improved his character along with his uncle, his uncle was straight up hateful and you feel nothing when he dies in the comics.

Someone, I can't remember who, did a video explaining why spiderverse Miles is so different from comic Miles, and it's basically because Tom Holland's Peter Parker was designed using basically all of Miles surface level character traits , so rather than be accused of riffing off of Holland's performance and the MCU's interpretation (despite the fact that that Peter Parker was riffing off of comic Miles (Nothing wrong with that, you mind)), the Spiderverse team dipped down and reworked miles's character from scratch. If only I could remember which spiderverse video it was.

I love the main three characters for different reasons. Gwen's combat and overall presentation was great, her back story was short but impactful, and I want to see more of her. Peter B. Parker made me cry for the first time in years and he embodied the fears I have as a young adult starting my life: "How do I know I won't mess it up again." And Miles was also incredibly relatable, feeling like there was so much expected of him, what if what made him happy meant he didn't live up to the "Great expectations." The way he mumbled lyrics he didn't know was perfect, the expressions of him handling emotions were tough to watch, and the barrage of family member quotes in his head as he made the leap was... well I don't know how to phrase it right, but I've been there (in my own small, non-spiderman way).

I absolutely love the animation of spider verse for just more than the reasons you mentioned, like: - the differing art styles between the different spider... people? Peni and porker have cel shading, noir consistently has dotted screentones for his shading and usually relies on highlights rather than shadows to define his shape (adding to the overall moodiness of his character design), etc. - the chromatic aberration, especially when playing with camera focus and how it differs in color for the characters (ex. Miles has a green and magenta offset, while the og Peter Parker has the classic red and blue) And so much more that I didn’t mention! All of the tiny details that went into this movie’s visuals are insane! Also, the sound design. Ohhhh that sweet sound design just tied it all together.

If this movie is Sony's apology for the Emoji Movie, then I accept.
@kin2naruto
@kin2naruto 5 жыл бұрын
I think the Emoji Movie was practice. Every scene looked like the practice animations I was assigned in college (Computer Animation Major). The characters were even the simple, rounded shapes that beginners are encouraged to start with. The plot was nothing more than a series of sponsored ads with a bare minimum of "non-ad" footage. They released a full movie of practice animation and... got paid for it!

Great video, but just a small note: every movie production style animation will have their animators act out their scenes and use it as reference for the scenes they work on, it's not exclusive to Spider-Verse. We did it a lot in school for projects when we were doing action shots or lip-syncs, or even simpler scenes.

I've seen a lot f the concept art for the different rooms and settings for the movie and you can feel the love and care that went into making them feel lived in. The opening scene really gets me because you can see all the things Miles is passionate about, but you can also so that his family supports him in pursuing those passions (i.e. the easel and high-quality markers) and that they love him so much - idk I tear up just thinking about it x')

AMAZING analysis of an AMAZING movie..... Great job yet again, Houston! 👏🏼 Your content gets better and better! Peter B. Parker is the most interesting character in this movie for me. The worn, world-weary depiction felt fresh and surprising as an iteration we had yet to see of this particular character. That it took a 13-year old kid to help him rediscover his purpose and direction was a nice dissection of how the road of life curiously converges us with the right people along our journey even if they often come packaged in unexpected ways. 😇 Can you imagine the pressure on this team for the sequel though?!?!? 😬😓

I hope in beyond the spider verse it gets more darker atleast

My favorite part of the entire movie was when he became Spider-Man, or realized that being Spider-man is a leap of faith. Before he jumped, you could feel the pressure, as the size of the city could really be seen. And when the glass broke as he jumped, it practically told you what he was feeling. He was scared, and afraid. But he took the leap of faith, and became, Spider-man. If you ask me it is the greatest animated scene ever thought of.

Every character felt like they were talking to each other rather than a script. The voice acting was so smooth and non robotic/cliche-it put you right in the movie with every character. You forgot to say that these movie's animation, art-style and storytelling is so brilliant that, in the scene Miles and Peter are getting the CPU from Alchemax to make a Goober, Miles animation was at 24fps while Peter's was at 60, and at the end, when Miles finally has his "leap of faith", his animation is at 60fps. That's just to show how he was still learning how to be a spiderman vs when he actually is spiderman

The animation felt like a combination of 3D, 2D, line art (is that even a term), and clay animation from the way the characters and scene moves. That's why this movie is my favorite in term of the liveliness of it. I love clay art, like Coraline, 3D not so much unless the story draws me in (Toy Story, Tangled), 2D will always be my first pick, but this movie is really awesome in that it's mostly 3D but sometimes they move like the clay art, and when 2D kicks into their mannerism, makes it so much better than it should be.

Spider verse was like a deep breath of fresh air to western pop-animation and superheroes, like watching this film was cathartic to say the least and I can never get tired of people analyzing it tbh

I really appreciate this analysis of Spider-Verse, you covered both the animation techniques and film direction choices which is something I've really been looking for. This is a well put together video and you should definitely be proud of the work you put into it!

I liked all the spider-people in this film-but what I love even more is the dynamic between Miles and Peter because I find it extremely poetic how Peter who was unwilling in the beginning to be become a father ends becoming a dad of sorts to Miles in the end after taking him under his wing and showing him the ropes (all be it reluctantly at first!)

Honestly I really like your notion of Animated realism. I'm coming off a kick from Across the Spider-verse and a deep disagreement with the line of thought that goes 'The characters should have switched into live action within a live action universe' (not a critique I've seen much but enough to be annoying) and I think this sums it up. At core those sorts of critiques assume that live action is somehow 'more real' than animation and that animation is just layer placed over a hypothetical live action film, when it isn't practical to make the work with practical effects. So the tendency to privilege live action is maintained. Following this people tend to ignore the ways animation can construct realisms to be more real in many ways than live action (intensifying emotions, matching subjective character experience and distorting space more easily) and ignore the ways in which live action isn't reality but just another form of media realism (given its features of focus, shot framing, etc which don't apply in real life but are unavoidable in cinematography).

my mother was sitting beside me while watching this movie, she doesn't watch much animation, has little to no knowledge about animation but the reason she told me for watching the movie was that "the people look and feel more real than other cartoons" so yeah. it is awesome

Didn’t mention the amazing music and sound design. The prowlers theme when he almost discovers Miles when he’s invisible always makes me so tense every time, things like that happen all throughout the film and I love it

Before the movie, I knew *of Miles* but not *about Miles* . They won me over from the beginning when Miles mumble sings the song. Everybody has done that at a point as a teen, maybe even still as adults. Like, I dont know all the words but I'll sing it anyways. And I definitely agree about even the minor characters felt like they had story to them. The teacher that didnt put up with Miles' Bs. The coach who had Spider-man Christmas Album on his computer, difference between old school and prep school kids, and Miles' roommate who I dont think even spoke a line of dialogue. Much more story then say, Shyamalan's characters with quirks that he thinks makes them a character: "You like hot dogs, right?"

Totally agree! I think the great thing about animation is that it doesn't have to be real and that gives you room for creativity! But modern animations try to be as much realistic as they can and have kinda lost creativity bc of it... Animations aren't the reality and that's the great thing!
