How can you compare McDavid with Lemieux and Gretzky? He gotta get more years and many more points under his belt before he's mentioned in the same sentence as them. And oh you forgot current player Sid Crosby, truly one of the greatest ever, who McDavid still needs to surpass after many years.

Being an Oilers fan and seeing the 2016 draft class kills me. I remember watching it and screaming for them to take Matthew Tkachuk. Everyone was saying we needed grit and physicality and yet we didn't take a freaking Tkachuk. I know that Pool party had massive upside, especially after the world juniors, but my goodness to this day it still hurts. Also seeing the depth that draft class had.. ugh.. P.S I know how dang lucky we are to have Leon and Connor, just saying, sometimes it stings.

We drafted a winger in Taylor Hall with the 2010 #1 pick and a center in RNH with the 2011 #1 pick. I was hoping they would take a defenceman with the 2012 #1 pick or trade it for a later pick and a defenceman. Instead, they took what is now known as the worst bust in the Salary Cap era. We could have had Morgan Reilly, Hampus Lindholm, though maybe 5 years too late we now have Ceci, Jake McCabe, Colton Parayko, or any good defenceman from that draft class. But the Oilers have been using a carousel of goaltenders since the run in 2006, and for a time, a carousel of head coaches. Yet not much has changed from the front office side of things.

Reasons I think Edmonton will win a cup in a year or two: -Skinner has more experience. -Campbell will have a bounce back year. -Bouchard has more experience and will improve his defensive game a lot. -McDavid should hit 150 points. -Draisaitl will hit 140 points. -I don’t expect another 100 point season from Nugent-Hopkins, but there’s little reason to not expect him to have a point/game. -Hyman will have at least a point per game. Remember, most of these guys are just hitting their prime now. Every year of experience they gain and stay in Edmonton, the strong the Oilers will be.

Jack Campbell did not disappear when you need him most. Woodcroft decided to play an exhausted rookie, starting him for 12 games straight even though he was pulled 4 times in those 12 games and he never played more than 6 straight since turning pro. Campbell saved the Oilers' bacon in game 4 against the Kings, and still leads the playoffs saving 49 of 51 shots he faced in the 4 times he played in relief of Skinner.

The cutoff of 15 years for first overalls that have won the cup is kind of sneaky, given that all five of the #1s in the years before Stamkos have all won at least one. I mean, 15 years kinda makes sense, but the entire lockout era , which just add 5 more for a nice round 20 makes more, and including Fleury in the lockout era makes sense because he was still a rookie after the lockout and he is still active...but then the number of #1 picks with cups shoots up from 2 of 15 (13%) to 7 of 20 (35%). J/K. You could have set it as just one of the last 10 and it still would have made sense. Though it is also true that 10 of the last 15 Stanley Cups have been won by a lockout era #1 pick. I think the Oilers will get there. They were in the WCF last year, just happened to run into the juggernaut that was the Avs that year. This year they looked even better, but it didn't work out. I agree that D and G are the sore spots, but I am not sure they NEED a #1D...I think a solid group of 3x #2s and #3/4s would be plenty. Goal is tricky, but the Avs showed that you don't have to have a stud between the pipes to win, it just takes a team in front that can limit chances against, and score at will (that part EDM has). The scoring of the entire forward group is fine, just need more commitment to team D from them...top to bottom every shift. Defense needs to limit mistakes, add a couple good defenders (even at the expense of offense). As far as McDavid garnering the biggest trade haul in NHL history....going to be hard to beat the Lindros trade.

I disagree about the top six and bottom six. RNH, Hyman and Kane didn't show up in round 2. I don't care about assists. Someone needs to score the next goal when Draisaitl scores 4 in game 1. When McDavid scores 2 in game 5 and you still lose, it means everyone else was invisible. No one should have expected Skinner to carry the team past a solid team like Vegas. Edmonton needs more from everyone else not named McDavid or Draisaitl.

Lifelong Oilers fan since inception. Those drafts that you showed, other than the four your highlighted were absolutely horrendous. I screamed every year for a goalie! Huge miss on Yakupov and they kept drafting the same style player. Small, shifty, not physicality at all. Our team is soooo close right now. Skinner will be the man so they need to try and trade Campbell unfortunately. Trade Ceci and Yamo. Have Holloway and Broberg to fill those spots and save cap space for Bouchard, Leon and Connor. Janmark will also go and we desperately need to keep Bjugstad and Kostin. We are soooo close. New goaltending coach should help also, draft a goalie this year and see if Savoie, Lavoie or Bourgault can fill Janmark’s spot, or any one of the. Can be a great call up if needed. And who know what they do with Ryan? Great (although sad) video.

I've learned, from three players, that draft position can't be trusted to predict future success. Alexis Lafrenière was drafted first overall and Kaapo Kakko was drafted second overall by the NY Rangers. While both are good players, and I love having them on the team, neither has lived up to being the number one and number two picks. Henrik Lundqvist was picked 205th overall in the 7th round by the Rangers as an afterthought. He, of course, is the best Swedish goalie in NHL history, the best goalie in Rangers' history, and was the fastest to have his number retired in Rangers' history.

In order to encourage front offices to put more effort into their drafting and farming systems the NHL should give teams discounts toward the cap for keeping and maintaining those players. This discourages outrageous free agent signings and brings a whole new aspect to the game. Imagine Darnell Nurse and Connor McDavid’s contracts had 10% discounts against the cap. That frees up another $4-5 million the Oilers have of Cap space. In my opinion, THAT is the next step in the salary cap era.

They could have won the cup this year even with their pronounced roster deficiencies because of their strengths. It would help a lot to fix the roster but the reasons they lost were: 1. Stupid penalties (mostly against LA, but who knows - more rest etc, maybe subsequent series outcomes change) 2. Shutting down when they had one-goal leads. Not just a little shut down, totally sitting back. 3. Missed D assignments to an extent that you can hardly imagine if you weren’t an oilers fan through all these years. But why now? They were better last year. 4. Some coaching failures: Skinner played to over-exertion, weird player deployment against VGK, etc. 4. Mid tier forwards mostly being ghosts. Especially Nuge. All of these things are totally avoidable (with some slack to injured players.) So I agree with your thesis about an unbalanced roster, but they were still possibly good enough despite that.

Maybe the Nuge can get them exactly that in return. Maybe Tampa Bay could be a good dance partner for that. At this point, maybe it's not a good idea to accept just anything but if I were Chiarelli I'd be listening to anything, who knows, there could be an interesting offer in there.

Oilers fan here. I was pissed when they took Broberg. They didn't need another left shot defenseman and Caufield was sitting there ripe for the taking. Not sure I will ever forgive Kenny for that one. But looking forward, they have a good roster and like you said, they NEED to make stu the guy. I don't think the organization owes Campbell anything other than the money he's already going to get, the problem is finding anyone to take that contract (and they don't want anymore dead cap via a buyout). Unfortunately, this is the team we are getting, so outside of moving out Yamo for a fresh face and hopefully picking up another RD, I don't see any earth shaking moves coming for the Oilers. That could all change when Draisaitl is due for a new contract, however. Their window is NOW, and if they don't move the needle in a hurry you could very well see some of the biggest trades in league history coming from E-town.

Honestly, I think the Oilers have 1 to 2 more seasons of being a "contender" and I don't think they're built to win now. This isn't to say that they couldn't win after that, but it is more about getting lucky in the playoffs than being a dominant team. In my opinion, what is going to hold them back is cap management by Holland. The Oilers will likely be forced to let a good complimentary piece go this offseason to keep most of their team together. They don't have the cap space to improve this team, so they will look incredibly similar next season. After this season Draisaitl will be due for an extension, there is no way Holland lets him start the season without extending him, which means he will either get a massive pay raise or is traded. The following season they're in the same position with McDavid. In my opinion, this puts the Oilers either losing one or both of their star players, or paying close to $30 million on 2 players; neither is the recipe for a championship team.

The next 2 years are make or break for the Oilers. If Drai and McDavid don't see improvements in the roster then things could change by the end of 29's contract.

Also with the topic of the Gretzky trade, the Oilers at that time was flat out broke. Edmonton had to choose between the Oilers or Gretzky. That's why money was part of the deal. In regards to McDavid, the Oilers is backed up by a billionaire who got us a rink with a lease that ends in 25+ years. The Oilers are financially safe beyond McDavid's hockey career. The only way he gets traded is if he wants too.

Skinner could become a top goalie but not for another year or two. What Edmonton needs is a star goalie. Build skinner under the wing of a star like hellebuyck. You can have all the goal scoring stars you want but if you don't have a 910+ goalie you can't win the cup.

You wanna know the condition of Edmonton's draft crew during chiarelli's reign? Holland in an interview this year said that he hired Steve staios because when he became GM he found out that the Oilers didn't have a scout in the OHL. WHY DOESNT A HOCKEY ORGANIZATION HAVE A SCOUT IN THE CHL'S LARGEST PRODUCERS OF HOCKEY PLAYERS?? No wonder why our management was such a huge let down especially in the draft. Our draft was pretty much done by ear or "best choice".

I vehemently disagree. In the Vegas series the top 6 got outscored massively, our bottom 6 were even or positive. Campbell came up big in the playoffs, Skinner has some very obvious issues that while I hope he can improve on, make him look like not starter quality to me (for the next couple of years, he can still improve). A lot of the goals against were directly attributable to defensive lapses by Connor and Leon in front of the net - they get caught puck watching WAY too often. Imo, you start with the same tandem for now, if Campbell repeats his regular season of the last year you trade for Carter Hart mid-season (Broberg + 1st + Bourgault + Campbell). You dump Yamamoto in the summer and you bring in Connor Brown for 1-1.5m, or Perry, or any other old timer looking to go cup hunting. And you also bring up Savoie and Holloway to to try to fill the hole left by Bjugstad. If you don't think Savoie is good enough for this roster in the middle 6 you add him to the trade instead of Bourgault. Hart and Skinner are both starter potential but they're both streaky, but they're both relatively young. You ride the hot hand.

Edmonton needs to fix their net situation, and stop going after players with good performance ceilings. Rather, the Oilers need players with high floors, players that don't make mistakes constantly and crack under pressure. Edmonton additionally needs the NHL to repeal their ruling that no Canadian team is allowed to win the Stanley cup based on issues of US/CDN currency differences and viewer market dynamics.

The only mistake the oilers made was being from Edmonton, the NHL doesn't want a Canadian team winning the Stanley cup there isn't enough money in it for them. I'm from Chicago and i would love to see Canada bring the cup home even though im a hawks & Avs fan.

Did this guy just say that the stars had a better draft than the 89 wings. This just isn’t even possible. Two hall of famers ( one arguably the greatest d man of all time ) a third who would have been hall worthy without a car accident. They draft Dallas drake at 116th and he played 1000 nhl games. 4 players from that draft played 1000 games. I’m sorry but no draft in history will be better

Despite the Oilers 4 first overall picks, they actually weren't that lucky, they weren't winning the 1st overall pick at the right time (excluding McDavid of course), like I mean, they won the first overall pick when Yakupov, Hall, and Nuge were the projected 1st overalls, you got to also get lucky with when you win 1st overall picks, and the Oilers couldn't get that luck until McDavid. And their late round drafting was also pretty damn unlucky. The Oilers have been paying back their debt to the hockey gods ever since the 80s, and that shows with their recent drafting.

I think they need depth, its one thing to have out of this world players but if your not building around that…whats the point in having them (look at the Angels of MLB they have Mike Trout the best player and the unicorn ohtani but the team is underachieving cause the other parts dont work) its like you have them wasting away putting up numbers but other than that…..what?

I mean look closer at the McDavid chart. Yes as a whole the goaltending was better before McDavid, but it was much better than their average his first couple years and cratered after. Why? It's obvious: his ELC ended. Some guys (McDavid, Tavares, Matthews) want to be the highest paid player to prove their worth. They are entitled to that right. Winners like Crosby and Stamkos leave some room to build afford their squadmates. Edmonton cannot afford to fill out a blueline and crease when they are paying what, $30+mil between three guys. Draisaitl took a cut, Connor didn't get the memo and his legacy is suffering for it. I'm not saying Connor doesn't deserve the money, but by taking the money he deserves the losing. If he cut that $12.5mil to $10mil (still higher than Sid, Mac and Draisaitl), that $2.5mil/year is the difference between Brett Kulak and Shea Theodore, or Kailer Yamamoto and Adrian Kempe. It sucks that Connor has to do it himself, but he chose this path. Crosby, Ovechkin and Stamkos all could've reset the market on their second or third contracts, they all chose to win instead.

Crosby signed a 8.7 million dollars contract that started in 2013-14. With a cap hit of 64.3 million, Crosby was equal to 13.53% of the cap hit. McDavid signed a 12.5 million dollars contract starting in 2018-19, where the cap hit was 79.5 million dollars. That is 15.72% of the team's cap hit. Let's also not forget that Crosby signed a 12 years contract which reduce the amount of money he receives per year, when McDavid has a 8 year contract. Let's also not forget that the cap hit has barely gone up in the past 5 years, by 3 million to be more precise, when Crosby as seen the cap hit go up faster, 15.2 million in the first 5 year of his contract. So yeah, totally McDavid's fault.

You're a little wrong about Ovechkin. The AAV on Ovi's 2008 contract was over 17% of the cap at the moment of signing. It was and still stands as 2nd contract in NHL history by capacity trailing only Brad Richards' post-cup contract with Tampa which took up maximum allowable 20% of the cap So, basically, Ovechkin pulled a McDavid in 2008. Props to the front office that got a President's Trophy out of it

I don't think it's all doom for the oilers, You have to remember the last 2 seasons they lost to the team that won the cup, Campbell played very well in his few appearances while skinner was inconsistently not good, Prehaps if they played campbell they might have won against vegas. It's clear they are contenders and imo all it's gonna take is skinner taking that next step OR jack campbell haven't a bounce back season.

What's the logic behind pulling up statistical examples about how their goaltending has been below average for a decade then giving them an above average score? Or even their bottom six, which has been a total non-factor in every playoffs McDavid has been featured in?

I was trying to stay focused in this video aha. But defense plays a major role in how I grade goaltending. If defense is subpar that will skew goaltending stats. A .910 sv% on a poor defensive team is much more impressive than the stats would say
