For the 23-year-old owner of Sol Sips in Brooklyn, New York, becoming an adult and a food entrepreneur happened simultaneously. Francesca Chaney learned to make her nutrient-dense vegan food for her own college meals before turning it into a business. Sol Sips started as a three-month pop-up restaurant that Chaney expected to be a short-term project. It became so successful that she’s now taken a hiatus from school to make it her full-time career. The cafe is famous for its vegan Chik’N Biscuit sandwich and sliding scale brunch, which allows people to pay between $7 and $15 for their meal.
Chaney learned the importance of giving back from her grandmother, who was famous for cooking big meals to feed her community, and Chaney wants Sol Sips to continue that tradition.
“We’re taking part in the nourishment of the people that are around us and sustaining the people that are around us,” Chaney said.
Chaney is also conscious of her status as a young woman of color in the restaurant industry and hopes to continue to inspire other food entrepreneurs of color.
“There’s not a lot of people that look like me in the neighborhood running these spaces, running restaurants,” she said. “I look forward to being able to shift the narrative.”
