The first time your coach asks you to run a 6-2 offense, it may seem crazy. This video will help you understand it a bit better and might reduce your anxiety. It should also begin your thinking about why we do this and how we might do other things to make our game better.

Thank you for this. Rotations are so confusing to follow sometimes. Question for you, I'm an outside hitter and we use a 6-2 rotation. I never get to serve the ball at all- is this how it's supposed to work? Do right side hitter only stay in the front row and will never get a turn to serve?

Hi there. Running a 6-2 means that all six rotational positions will hit when they are in the front row. The "2" means there are two designated setters. When either setter is in the front row, they are intended to be hitters when we are "in system" (meaning we have a good pass and can run our offense as desired). Sometimes coaches choose to substitute for their setter in the front row. There are lots of reasons for this, like a better blocker or a better hitter, or even someone they would like to get some playing experience. Now, if you are one of those players substituted in for the setter in the front row, when you rotate into the serving position, there would be no back row setter. In general, a coach wants to have a setter there, so front row, non-setting right side hitters (also known as Opposites since they are opposite a setter) do not serve. An exception might be where a coach decides to leave the front row setter in to set and has the opposite serve. You can do this (it's rare). You might do it if the opposite is a fantastic server. In effect, for that one rotation, it would be a 5-1 sort of setup. I have had to explain this to an occasional upset parent, who doesn't understand why their player doesn't serve. Since you said you are an outside hitter, this should not apply to you. But I'm guessing that you are playing right side (opposite) in these situations where you are not serving and they are subbing a setter in for you. Do your coach a favor and explain this to your parents. Also, keep working on all your skills. We coaches like players who understand all the positions and can jump in and play where we need them. Good luck with your season! Coach Steve
