The combined cycle power plant in Menifee has been demolished and an energy storage power plant is currently being built in its place.
@Chisox6367 жыл бұрын
Very cool! So basically, a combined cycle plant has the same goal as an engine with a turbocharger. Primary energy generation, with an additional mechanism to catch energy from the exhaust.

I work at one here in my hometown, I'd say less of a Turbocharger and more of a jet turbine. But as a car guy understand we're coming with the turbo, just the turbine itself is essentially a giant jet turbine

The gas turbine consists of 2 sections the gas generator with high pressure turbine And the power/low pressure turbine Wich spins independently of the gas generator at a variable speed thanks to a second independent shaft. An external drive Wich is an electric motor starts the gas turbine and it drives the shaft of the high pressure turbine allong with the compressor mounted on this same shaft. The compressor driven by the high pressure turbine serves to take in the air needed for cumbustion, inside the 6 combustion Chambers the air is mixed with feul gas and this mixture is ignited. The hot exhaust gasses expand driving both the high and the low pressure turbine blades making them spin , the fast spinning turbine blades and shaft drives a generator wich converts the spinning energy to Electrical energy. The hot exhaust gasses then flow through the gas turbine defuser wich increases the gas pressure and ejects it via the outlet casingof the exhaust. The high temperature gas can still be utilized to generate steam when it comes out. Connected behind the turbine you will find the specialy designed boiler called a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) it's function is to capture the high temperature exhaust gas from the gas turbine and convert it to steam. Thanks to the captured exhaust gas The HRSG then generates steam where it is then delivered to a steam turbine where even more electricity will be produced. The main steam piping Wich are Huge bundles of pipes running out of the HRSG to the steam turbine, are the pipes that deliver high temperature and high pressure steam from the HRSG to the steam turbine. The steam turbine uses this steam from the main steam piping to spin the generator. Similar to the gas turbine high temperature and high pressure steam passes through the steam turbine turning the blades and the shaft Wich turns the second generator to make more electricity.
@ushoys5 жыл бұрын
Not in this video. As it describes, this gas turbine weighs 400 tons and is a frame-type single shaft, not an aeroderivative engine as you describe. Aero gas turbines are not as good for CC application because they're so efficient in simple cycle that there's relatively little energy left in the exhaust to make steam.
@stevemiller67662 жыл бұрын
Only in Areo-direvitives. heavy frame turbines are on one shaft and spin at 3000 rpm in this example and 3600 rpm for North America, Saudi Arabia and Japan. How do I know?I work on them.

Not a bad setup, though one improvement to this operation that I might suggest is the addition of thermoelectric generators (the ones that use the Peltier-Seebeck Effect for example) wherever you need heat exchangers, such as within the water boiler (where the water is separated from the heat source), and within wherever the steam is allowed to collect to cool off before being reused for steam power.
@stevemiller67662 жыл бұрын
the issue comes down to service and practically. The systems are very demanding on materials due to harsh environment they operate in. These plant are designed to be robust and dependable to supply the grid with electricity. These plants cost close to 100 million bucks to build and the company owning them are not interested in experiments - they want profits.

Not included/shown are the solar-powered carbon capture reactors prior to the heat extractor where superheated gasses condense into clean reusable liquid fuel as the near plasma superheated now clean exhaust gasses put to heat storage and are cooled by the steam generator producing more power than the gas turbine, plus a ready to burn a condensed clean liquid fuel, perhaps to reinject into the turbine engine and export depending on how much intake CO2 it also removes from the air. Methane supplied by landfill. May GE America find ways to include these magical modules and more.
@stevemiller67662 жыл бұрын
... and lubricated with unicorn tears?
@zAlaska2 жыл бұрын
This was a while ago what I was referring to as I seen the solar project that it takes a whole bunch of concentrated mirrors that heats the gas the plasma like temperatures and somehow a liquid is produced of hydrocarbons the condenses out it's clear clean fuel if they can capture out of the exhaust so that's what I was referring to and I don't know where that for us somebody just commented on me and I can see why somebody would be last reading what I read and wrote. It was turning exhaust into a liquid fuel with lots of solar power blasting it.

So both the gas turbine and steam turbine are spinning the same generator. I'd think they'd each have their own generator. This is especially likely since a lot of combined cycle plants will have multiple GTs but only one ST.
@stevemiller67662 жыл бұрын
More efficient. Since there isn't a bypass exhaust stack in the example here if the gas turbine runs the steam turbine has to run.
@rickpaliuca50972 жыл бұрын
Two generators double the cost and the footprint.
@bbmw90292 жыл бұрын
@@rickpaliuca5097 very rarely do you see a single GT combined cycle plant. Usually there are 2-4 GTs, with the steam created from their exhaust going to a single steam turbine, driving its own generator.
