The gasoline example here is for IDI, aka port fuel injection, which is an old way of mixing fuel and air. These days, they use direct injection, which is the same way diesel operates, but there is still need for spark ignition.

Seeing this video brings back all those theoretical aspects to life, in a much more easily understandable manner. Thanks, Shell!

One thing I didn't learn in this video is how a cold started diesel stays running without hot air to evaporate the fuel spray. I'm assuming les fuel may be sprayed in a cold start and then progresses as the engine warms. That's the only way I can understand a cold diesel engine staying running after being started.

Actually diesel fuel burns at the boundary surface of fuel spray. The combustion does not occur in the entire space of combustion chamber. That is the biggest difference between diesel combustionand this video. The host of this video should see the visualization of diesel combustion system.

Wrong. In fact, the exhaust valve opens before the piston reaches its lowest point in power stroke. And the intake valve closes later than the piston begins to move up on the compression stroke.

Well i still have a hundred questions. How and why does air heat up and explode without a spark... why is diesel still cheaper and more economic, and why do diesel engines dont have the same power as petrol ones... why does the petrol engine need a spark if the process is 90% the same as in diesel - air being compressed and heated, mixed with gas... This didnt really answer anything for me lol, but its a good representation of the basic mechanics, thats true.
@achim07
@achim07 2 жыл бұрын
Gasoline is much more stable and therefor requires an external source of energy to spark the ignition. Chemically speaking both fuels are just carbohydrate chains. The longer the chain the 'quicker it can break' Gasoline is very short, Diesel is longer. High pressures and temperatures are enough to ignite Diesel fuel. If you put gasoline in a diesel engine (do not do this) it would not ignite (and cause serious problems). Engine power = torque x revs, Diesel engines don't rev as high as gasoline engines, therefor are less powerful (even though the difference is negligable in modern cars). 'How and why does air heat up and explode without a spark' - the air alone does not do this, only when Diesel is added right before the piston is at top dead center. 'why is diesel still cheaper and more economic' - more economic because the compression ratio is much much higher, thermodynamically speaking efficiency is a function of compression ratio.

Good video but a direct injection gas engine is different and….. it sucks. The fuel loaded with detergents can’t keep the intake valves clean like a traditional air/fuel valve gas engine can. That’s why direct injection engines get serious trouble after so many mikes and run rough, while cleaning the fuel system is much more expensive to do. I hate direct injection gasoline engines for that very reason.

@Michael-fr8gy

It’s because of the compression ratio. Notice how the volume of air in the diesel is way less at top dead centre, compared to the gas one which has a larger cavity at the top. A higher compression ratio increases the temperatures. If you had gas in an engine with compression ratios as high as a diesel, the fuel would ignite before it reaches the top and cause problems, potentially damage.

Diesel fuel is actually a very thin oil, whereas gasoline is a solvent - which is like the opposite of an oil. The extremely high fuel pressures in modern diesel engines require a high pressure injection pump. The simplest way to lubricate those pumps is with the fluid that they're pumping. Diesel accomplishes this very well. Also, diesel fuel has more energy in it than gasoline, so I don't think gasoline would be any better in the power/fuel efficiency department.
