Dan is knocking down the only remaining good ceiling today - and, Brian, you *had* to show him one totally gilded, didn't you? Don't come complaining when you're on your back on scaffolding like Michelangelo. You'll know where he got the idea. 🤣🤣 Thank you for taking us to Fontainebleau!!! It is totally amazing, and stunningly beautiful. Worth the detour! I love seeing magnificent palaces. But, in the back of my mind, I wonder how long it takes to clean them...

It’s close to Paris… 2 hours the other side. More like “in the direction of Paris.” You’re a good friend. Fun to have teenage Brian in his teenage dream car going to his teenage dream destination. It’s the teenager bucket list. 😉 I’m wondering whether you’ll have time to find those boulders. 🤞👍 😁 “I’m dying to know if this is a drinks cabinet.” You could put Dan’s whole chateau in one of those rooms! I agree about the size, etc. of the properties, and its relationship to the French revolution. Thomas Jefferson, on a trip to France, apparently commented that the poor didn’t have even a single window in their homes (as in opening… we’re not even talking about glass), because they were taxed per window and couldn’t afford it. When they wanted light, they had to open the door, no matter the weather. He felt France was ripe for revolution… and he wasn’t wrong. Wonder where all the gold came from for Napoleon’s throne room. 🤔 I always have mixed feelings about these places. They’re interesting, but my family were all poor farmers and coal miners and fishermen and reindeer herders, etc., for generations. I’m sure my ancestors all owed money to the lords and kings to keep them in nice places. I’ve seen the house of one of my ancestors in Norway, up above the arctic circle. 2 rooms, with no windows, for 2 adults and 14 kids (wife #1 died in childbirth). No wonder half of their descendants came to America.

Interesting story with your child-hood connection to Fontainebleau. I lived there for a few years, wonderful place. Yes, the palaces were opulent, but I tend to look at it as a sum of many people's skills. Think of all the craftsmanship that went into every aspect of that château. And THAT's what's outlived all the royalty, etc. Another neat thing about that château is that it's probably the most fully furnished of the royal châteaus. I used to love walking around the gardens at all seasons.

Was reading this morning about the fierce rivalry between Fontainebleau’s builder, Francois 1, and England’s Henry VIII. They participated in jousts and other feats of arms, but Fountainebleau was celebrated in such a way that Henry built Hampton Court and its gardens to answer the challenge. Thank you for the timely tour! Love being in the fast car with about 40 some others…cozy! And always fun.

Your story about Fountain Bleu took my mind back to the early 90's, when I went rock climbing there. Or rather it was climbing on the sides of big rocks. I love that story. My friend in England occasionally posts photos of local interest and one of my favorites is a sign that says “Dog in the Lane”. All I can think of it must have been a great dog that everyone knew it and it was so famous or loved that they would use it to give directions. Just go down to the dog in the lane, then turn right. And eventually the road was referred to as Dog in the Lane to this very day. Fox hounds can be great dogs. I love how they named the town after Bleu and the spring he discovered.

Thanks for taking me along. I can see why 15 year old Brian wanted to go there, but it was and could still be a very pricy place to visit. That chateau is so opulent. It is just a very beautifully constructed building and all of the ornate paintings and gold leaf is really incredible. The upkeep back in the day, and today must be enormous. Yes you can see why the revolution happened, the Royalty back then were just so out of touch with every one, and you could imagine the carriages and horses arriving with the attire they’d wear back in those days, quite a striking place of French history. Thanks for the tour and the history lesson. 👍👍

Great video. You need to get back to the Chateau it's pure chaos. Dan is busting out ceilings and floor joists and he has gone back to noggins. Did you hear me, he is back to noggins which is so last year. And he has a load of 60 year old wood coming but on the bright side it should be dried out unless it rains.

It's a classified monument,it's the government property, they are responsible to entertain it, cleaning is easy, just like any government property, our taxes pays to keep it clean, restore it is different, they use the income of tourists visiting to keep what is open to the public impeccable, but most of it is still closed because they need fund to restore it completely. What is mostly open to the public is the Kings apartments and their wives, the Kings always traveled with their court, and each person invited by the king was in charge of their own apartment which was costly, they often travelled with their belongings and that's why most of the château is actually empty.

Did you know that after Waterloo the winner took with him a most of Napoleon’s personal belongings and decorations from the apartment in Paris. Can be seen in Nelson’s then newly bought home in London, now a museum. First thing you meet is a bust of a naked Napoleon inside the entrance, every plate comes from the wedding set of Napoleon’s wife with monograms on them, etc. Apparently he did not have much to decorate the house before as he was mostly occupied in the army.
