The day I left Northern Illinois for Oklahoma, it was 16 below with a mighty wind and heavy snow. Scraping ice off the windows, my polycarbonate ice scraper shattered. 30mph on I55 was reckless driving. Now and then I had to stop for whiteout conditions or for a car facing the wrong way. I could understand how that happened as the wind was always trying to turn the car around. I reached Broken Arrow Oklahoma the next afternoon and it was sunny and 48 degrees. My civic was a pretty sure-footed car.

Wow! I am glad you made it home safe. Your story reminded me of a similar drive I did in the snow many years ago from Jackson, Tennessee to Cookeville, Tennessee. I was driving a 3rd Generation (1993) twin turbo Mazda RX-7. Talk about Zoom, Zoom! That car would fly!! Anyway, it was a white knuckle drive along I-40 with some scary moments, but I made it without incident. My guess on the tow bill is $250. Love your channel!

BTW - Ken, have you ever heard of traction cables? They are like tire chains but not the same. They are lower profile than chains but can really help "bite" into slippery road conditions. They don't cost that much, and can be a pain to put on, but can make the difference between moving forward (up a hill) or slipping sideways into a ditch.

"I had to stay at the Motel 6. Luckily they left the light on for me." - Classic Ken Heron humor. On my 16 Toyota Camry Hybrid Le I purchased Michelin Cross Climate 2's and they do absolutely amazing in the snow. They are on the top when it comes to an all whether tires. You'd drive away out of that little bit of snow like a boss in your car. AAA is a great help. Great footage and love the show Ken. Keep up the amazing work!

I feel for ya man. I live on top of a mountain in faulkville Alabama and was trapped for four days. On the fifth we tried to go to the store and made it about half way down before we gave up. RWD toyota 4runner just spinnin tires and losing ground and a car went off the road in front of us almost going off the side of the mountain. Thankfully a good Samaritan came back with a tow rope and pulled us up the mountain so we could go home. oh and i guess 600 for the tow..

Where I live, the conditions you drove in would be an average winter day, and I get around fine in my rear-wheel drive van even in significantly worse weather. 😋 But I understand why it would be a harrowing experience for you there. The road crews don't have the equipment or experience to keep the roads in great driving shape despite weather conditions, you and/or the the other drivers have very little experience with that type of slippery surface and almost certainly your car does not have snow tires (they make an incredible difference, but, I mean, why WOULD you have snow tires if you only need them once every several years?) If I lived THERE, I wouldn't even dare go out on the roads in those conditions despite decades of experience driving through it HERE. So very glad you made it home safe!!

It was definitely a bit sketchy riding with my friend with a truck that the front dif wasn’t working. Luckily he was a good driver! I live up here in Wisconsin and this weather is no joke. Our roads haven’t cleared up since we got the storm and this ridiculous cold freezes the roads up. My front wheel drive Camry sucks in the weather but I can’t imagine a rx8

I grew up with muscle cars in Tulsa, and we'd have similar happen to us. Super nice, then it snows, then it rains, and then freezes...and snows again. You see little fluffs not always realizing there is black ice under it. I've stood still on a road, but because a lot of our roads were "crowned," I'm sliding sideways off the road (on the black ice). Glad that truck helped you at the end. People like that are salt of the Earth and awesome in my book. Just out of curiosity, did you check your airspace class for those impromptu B rolls :) Hee hee.

$348 for the tow, that's my guess. I had a miata on summer tires when I lived in MI. We had a huge storm and I barely made it home. My 45 minute commute was over 3 hours that day. On I-75 the snow in the middle of the lane was dragging on my undercarriage. Similar experience with my heavily modded Volvo V70 R in TN and KY. Now I'm about 1,400 south of my old house in MI. No more snow lol

Hey Ken, what day was this? I started a trip from central New York State to JFK Airport, and back, on 1/6/24. It took close to (or over) 6 hours to get home - at about 30 mph - or less. I was driving a rented Chrysler Pacifica van that may(!) have had all wheel drive. LOL I never drove off the road, but saw many vehicles that had. The really bad weather came after leaving JFK Airport. The snow started falling about 30 miles, after dark, driving west on Rt 80 into New Jersey. To tell the truth, I wouldn't have minded having rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive may PULL you through the snow, but when those tires start to spin, due to the conditions being slippery or icy, then you have neither directional control or forward (pulling) control. But to tell the truth, I wish I had been driving my old 1996 Toyota Rav4. It had a "Center Lock Differential" setting and would then drive like a tank. All the wheels spun at the exact same speed! Oh how I loved that car!

Be glad you didn't get stuck IN ALABAMA. It's early, early Saturday and I just got back home from South Alabama. When I left this morning from Southern Middle Tennessee and drove down south Highway 43 and Highway 72 (2 major 4 lane highways) had yet to be treated or graded. They finally ran a snow plow today on both. It was a stark contrast at the state line TDOT roads were great ADOT sucked. Tennessee DOT graded Highway 43 like 4 days ago just after the snow stopped and probably once before (I didn't leave house Monday or Tuesday dunno). Luckily Alabama didn't get near as much snow like half what I did here at home. (Lawrence County)... Oh yeah my guess is $632.
