Clutch Flywheel How it is Resurfaced Reconditioned

When replacing a clutch should you have the existing flywheel resurfaced or purchase new? It's important for the new clutch disc to sit flat and make good contact with the flywheel and pressure plate for proper operation. Original flywheels parts can be resurfaced or aftermarket parts are available at a reasonable price. Sometimes using aftermarket parts can sacrifice quality. In this video I discuss what I chose and why. It's important to get it right because nobody wants to have to pull out the transmission for a new part that fails. Thanks for watching. -Glen (Ozz)

Cool video man! Never seen this process but been curious. I had an accord I got cheap to drive while I manual swapped my own accord and whenever I was in stop and go and the flywheel or clutch would heat up the engagement started getting jagged and chattery. I figured the heat lifted the imperfections and bumps higher and made it chatter versus when it is cold and smoother. Never skip a resurfacing!

Luk used to be the best aftermarket clutch you could buy. Luk used to make the clutches for the dual clutch Powershit transmission in the 2013 and newer Ford Focus and Fiesta. I heard that Ford has or is in the process of suing them. Your "swiss cheeze" flywheel is an example of Luk quality now.

You didn't say what this flywheel came off of. Does it have an external slave cylinder or internal? If external it's ok to resurface the flywheel you can adjust for the material taken off, but if it's internal you can run into problems with the clutch pedal height!!! The pressure plate fingers to throw out bearing distance is finite and is not adjustable. You need to measure the thickness of the flywheel before you turn it and after it is resurfaced and add a shim behind the flywheel and crankshaft equal to the amount removed!!! If you don't do this the clutch pedal height will be lower and can cause shift problems!!! Yes I've been burned by this and no longer turn flywheels in my shop!!! I only replace them with new full thickness flywheels!!! Just a helpful tech tip from a career mechanic and shop owner!!! Keep Rocking it out!!!
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you did not watch the entire video. 1) what vehicle? 0:10 mark, regarding flywheel thickness 6:30 mark. Have a great day.
@rockerpat1085
@rockerpat1085 5 жыл бұрын
@@ozzstars_cars I missed you saying it's from an 87 Ranger. So internal slave cylinder!!! That means you need to adjust for the material taken off of the flywheel. That was not discussed only how much can be removed. So if you don't know how much you remove, you can't know how much to shim. Let's say you ground 100 thousand off the clutch surface of the flywheel, you now need to install a shim behind the flywheel 100 thousand thick. This way your throw out bearing is touching the pressure plate in the correct location. When you remove material from the flywheel, the clutch and pressure plate has now moved towards the engine by the amount you cut off. Because of this the clutch pedal height inside the truck will change and can cause shifting problems. I.E. hard to get into gear, grinding of gears. That's why it's important to shim the flywheel when turned on internal slave cylinder clutches!!! Have a good one and Keep Rocking!!!
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 5 жыл бұрын
@@rockerpat1085 i understand your.point if it is an extreme amount of material removed. Taking .005 off the flywheel has no effect in this case. That's half a human hair. Btw, the clutch works.great and the trans shifts smooth as silk I this case.

That flywheel you grinder down looked like it had a step in it, the inside was deeper than the outside of the rim. I think it was supposed to look like that and the guy grinder it down totally flat across the whole surface!
