Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing. 🗡Join the Online Iaido Training with Seki Sensei🗡 Sign Up Here (One Lesson FREE): www.patreon.com/sekisenseiiaidotraining Interested in taking Iaido lessons directly from the 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, Seki sensei? It's likely they are too vague to easily interpret. Often these were written so only insiders would understand them. Big systems might eventually get detailed manuals because they were so popular the secrets were just out, but smaller ones wanted to keep their secrets. The Liechtenauer system is a good example. Lots of manuals which are detailed, but without them the poem left by Liechtenauer himself would mean nothing. It's called Liechtenauer's Zettle if you want to look it up.

While the Naginata is regarded as a distinctively Japanese weapon, other cultures had similar weapons, including European polearms, such as the Kuse, Glaive (both look like an oversized kitchen knife on a pole), and the Säbelhellebarde (small halberd head with a saber blade instead of a spike). The Chinese also went quite overboard with glaive-style weapons and created really big ones... There were also more cut-focussed straight blades, such as partisan, and schwertspiess (the latter is a shortsword mounted on a pole), and some that resemble the Jumonji Yari, such as Spetuum and some partisan. The latter seems to me far more popular in Europe, though not as popular as halberds, poleaxes, and bills, which all are more axelike and heftier weapons.

After learning more about various weapons, east and west, I admit that I got more interested in polearms more than swords. I’ve always admired the Naginata, it’s such an exceptionally graceful weapon, perhaps one of the most graceful in any cultures’ martial arts traditions. I’m always a supporter of keeping alive - or recreating, where we must - the martial arts traditions of the past, so of course I would absolutely love to see the 15 techniques of your school practiced once again! I’m also a big fan of practicing the commonly used battlefield weapons such as the spear, along with the appropriate techniques - or the more rare duelling techniques, where they exist (such as all the amazingly crazy stuff in German legal duelling codes, such as the two-handed duelling shield), so this neatly encompasses both of my interests!

This is very interesting, because most of what I have heard about the Naginata was in army formations, in which they fought side by side to take advantage of it's length, so they could only attack forwards. But in individual combat it's completely unique, similar to a Bo staff, but still unique.
@TheGhost-7002
@TheGhost-7002 7 ай бұрын
I think you are thinking of the Yari. The Naginata was mostly used by the Samurai in the Heian and Kamakura periods. After the Mongol Invasions the Naginata began to fall out of favour as battles became more about formations rather than groups of individuals fighting each other. The Yari, most famously in the Sengoku Period, was used in massive formations. It replaced the Naginata as the main melee weapon of the Samurai.
@edi9892
@edi9892 7 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend that weapon in formation, unless it was at the sides of a formation, similar to how many Zweihänder were used, including also Chinese and Japanese two-handed swords (basically when you get flanked and quickly need some skirmishers to save your main formation from breaking). I'd rather equip my troops with Jumonji Yari, or modify the naginata similar to the German Säbelhellebarde (basically a short saber blade with an additional small, blunt axehead and a small hook). Both weapons have two advantages over the Naginata: they can be used to push and pull, allowing for more effective use in tight spaces such as tight formations. Plus, you can whack helmets with the latter weapon without damaging the blade.
@greyvr4336
@greyvr4336 7 ай бұрын
Naginata shouldn't hook as well as a bill or halberd, but they do have a large roundel just behind the blade like the one on a pole axe, except on a pole axe it's usually lower down and a push assist instead of a hook aid. It's not well modeled on these wooden ones, but it's there on many when assembled.
@edi9892
@edi9892 7 ай бұрын
@@greyvr4336 Yes, many have that, but I wouldn't see it work for this. However, a few Naginata had protrusions for hooking. I don't know why they weren't more common.
@benchii7867
@benchii7867 7 ай бұрын
@@edi9892probably cause they would have it on spears so they found it unnecessary when you can just grab a spear. Plus naginata is primarily a swing weapon so a spear would work better for hooking someone.

As stated in the video the Naginata is not a spear, so what would we call a weapon like that here in the West? We'd call it a glaive. Spears are thrusting polearms, glaives are slashing polearms, and Halberds are their own thing (polearm + axe). Although some debate if Naginatas are glaives, if you think they are cool and want to see more like it, then glaives are the way to go.

Really cool to see where he got his inspiration when he was trying out the halberd!

Love seeing other weapons interact with the katana, especially the naginata. Seeing the techniques be revived would also be an amazing thing to see Sensei add to the legacy of the school!

I love the naginata. It's such a fascinating weapon as it's not really a sword but also not a spear. It's combines some of the best features of both.

I would love to learn more about naginata and katana. What would also be interesting for me is if pistols/revolvers got included in sword fights aswell like it happend in germany and england (among others probably). What also would be fascinating for me would be if there was techniques for bayonet and if japan did it differently then european countries. The time period where you had both samurai aswell as modern weapons is extremely interessting for me (prob because I played shogun 2 back then a lot).

What I enjoy most about this video series is seeing how similar many of the techniques are between the European arts and more familiar with and the Japanese. Yes, there are definitely differences partly due to weapon differences and partly due to other factors like clothing & how one can move in it. But for me its most interesting focusing on the similar ideas, philosophies & techniques.

As a HEMA practitioner used to having to work predominantly from documents, I would love to learn more about how they’re interpreted and put to motion by Seki Sensei!

Polearms are in most circumstances more effective than swords thanks to their superior reach and how intuitive they are to use. I am quite curious to someday learn how weapons like the Naginata and Yari compare to their western counterparts. From what i can see, the Naginata does share many characteristics with weapons like the halberd and the glave

I agree with the other comments, it would be nice to revive those kata. The point is to revive the reyuha and it's culture. The other headmasters made sure to write them down for a reason. That would be awesome. Thank you Seki Sensei for another very cool video. 💪

The process of recreating the kata from documentation would be really interesting: HEMA people have to do this all the time, and it would be interesting to compare the challenges, what the documents look like, and so on.
