In BIOS is the keyboard backlight set to constantly ‘On’ ? Auto ALS and Input - The keyboard automatically illuminates in dim lighting - Maybe same circuit. Google states because of some setting on BIOS. Open your HP BIOS and go to the Advanced Settings tap. If there's a Built-in Device Options menu there, you will find keyboard settings under it that allow you to set your backlit keyboard to always on. So it could be just a BIOS setting which means the keyboard backlight is constantly set to on.

Hello Sorin. This happened to me about 3 times, with different laptops. It seems to be a failure in the EC internal switching (transistor or logic). There must be almost a resistor between this pin 2 in the flat cable and the EC. When you apply your body, you are applying a capacity between the pin and ground; so, as the logic out of the EC is almost bad, it reacts to your capacity. Instead of a resistor, like you said in the video, you can avoid change of the EC installing a 0.1uF cap between the faulty line and ground. Try this.

that LED is PWM controlled by something since it "breathes" when the laptop is in sleep. It might be ic chip that is partually open or chip on the button pcb. and when touched you pull dow power enough so it turns off.

I have seen the same issue in phones the flash light always on the problem was a shorted cap on the charging ic line the pin name was (FLASH ENABLE) Or in this case there's a problem with one of the resistances because when you touch the board the value is changing

Hi Sorin, this is a issue reported with some HP laptops and it is not a hardware issue, the problem is related to the Intel MEI driver, so if you want to power off that led, you need to try this: 1. Update BIOS and reinstall the Intel MEI from HP web (works 80% times); this problem occurs if you have older BIOS and you install the update version of Intel MEI driver then the system becomes unstable and generates these kinds of wrong behaviors. and if the BIOS update doesn't work, just do this: (before do this, verify that you have Intel MEI installed) - Go to Device Manager - System Devices -> find Intel Management Engine Interface - Right Click properties. - Power Management tab - Untick option "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" and voila, light turns off when you shutdown the laptop.

26:41 some type of transistors have sensitive gates, which you can activate using your finger, and you know that. So maybe in rare case, the typical transistor can get fault and start to behave like touch sensitive type. So trace and find transistor which is related to that diodes and check it - maybe it is bad, or looks like a good one, but its gate is flow/leaks to source, or maybe there is damaged capacitor or resistor connected to that gate. Too bad that you didn't even measure from where, that LEDs are taking the voltage.

(14:03) What's the point? Master Sorin, I liked this answer I read on a forum: when the Front Display Panel moves against the palm rest, the laptop closes (the led should go off) and so the hinges (a very common critical point of failure) It does NOT make any effort or is reduced to the minimum. Another way of saying it, the hall sensor and other technical explanations I leave aside for the moment, as I prefer to always have a hardware problem I would just replace the small 6050A3038301 module and if the fault continues then I seek advice from software experts. All the best

1.The extra brightness makes me check the voltage on the ground and LED wires. Or maybe the LED supply is supposed to be pulsed. I like the idea already suggested by earlier to power the LED from the keyboard backlight. Or use an optocoupler in line with the power LED to control it with the keyboard backlight 2. Floating data line from the button. Add 1K pull-up resistor. 3. Final guess 😁 Treat those areas of liquid damage with Kolofonium flux. I like this one best

13:10 - Example how faulty component change characteristics based on temperature (in this case return to normal function when heated enough). You were not touching it with your hands. Or that pcb has broken track, and when you heat it, PCB bend it self, as expands and make contact to tell to motherboard to stop lightning signal. Another example can be vibration, when you hit component with plastic pen, it starts working. 17:56 - You can try tweezers with ceramic tip, they isolate you from circuit. Our body has capacitance and you were probably not grounded. What can happen is that this is only place to manifest problem, but actually can be somewhere on motherboard. Check signals on connector where that flat cable goes on motherboard. Maybe motherboard wants to turn LED on, at all times, maybe its not button at all. 21:00 - Its not light sensor, it cheated you, when you look in side, it turns on, then you bring light. 25:09 - You can find schematics of chips on that small pcb, online, and see what they are for. 27:55 - When if you short signal that is turning LED on, to GND, it will go OFF because voltage goes to ground directly.

Hello Sorin, 1 - take out the ribbon cable 2 - deep clean everything with isopropyl alcohol 3 - reflow all solders 4 - have you tried to close the cover ? Maybe the hall sensor is shutting down the LED and with the cover open, it is shutting down after some time.

I'd hazard a guess that a pull-down resistor has gone open circuit, either on the button board or the motherboard, so a transistor gate is now floating and anything can cause it to go off/come on (touch, temperature)......I'm curious if replacing the button board would fix it, although I'm not sure where you'd find one.....

That led is supposed to flash if the laptop is in suspend or hibernation mode, so in that case it is intermittedly pulled to ground from the sio chip which is software controlled. I've had the same laptop and the only thing I could say is that those LEDs are supposed to be ON only while the laptop is ON and there are no touch sensors there. It's just a mechanical button. I have encountered lots of problems like this. And not only with laptops. Everytime the solder looks good and shiny but is sticking only by the components legs. Heating and pulling by components is the only way. They go off before solder melt to uncover oxidated pads with no trace of solder on them - just oxidated copper - components being lifted with the solder on the original shape on their legs. Is a 'miracle' that i usually discover on cheap electronics, but now it appears on nice laptops too. Is more tragic when a battery BMS with balance function actually in unbalancing the cells because it gets the measurements wrong and is still letting you to charge the battery and use it 🤦. Quality in electronics is not what it used to be.
@georgedone7997 Жыл бұрын
I do not think is supposed to work like that, I seccond the opinion that it must be about a pull-up resistor missing/defective. I do not think there is a hall sensor on the tiny board since when lid is closed the LCD screen itself would be about the hall sensor and that is not magnetic. Hall sensors are built usually on the top side of the lid and engage with a magnet in the palmrest.

Hi Sorin, it seems to me a short somewhere either on the ribbon cable or in the ribbon cable connectors, I would check the the tracks on the ribbon cable. It is possible that the 3.3v reference going to the power button is shorting out on the LED track but the voltage is not being dropped enough to trigger a notebook shutdown or power on like pressing the button. This can happen with LEDs as they need very low voltage to turn on. Cheers!

maybe its a light sensor, if its normal. the light is on when you open the laptop to easily find the power button, and it will work when the place is dark, and the sensor maybe place on the keyboard or touch pad area.. now I'm thinking what other say, this issues starts when the owner install the wrong drivers,. so the sensor goes sensitive and malfunctioning, even a tiny hot radiation it will switch.

Is it a sensor that is meant to light up when you open the laptop LID, and it turns off when you close the laptop LID? But in this case it's faulty and it's not turning off when the laptop lid is closed. Interesting observation when you touch with your finger (your body has a small voltage which is how touch screens work on phones), that small voltage is exciting the connector pin 1 & 2 together :D What doesn't make any sense is the heat gun is exciting the connector also... Unless the movement of hot air is enough to move / bend the cable and the connector in some way... crazy.

The purpose of that light is to drive you crazy. It's the everything is OK light. Seriously though I think maybe a capacitor on the mini-PCB has gone open circuit (or a resistor) and introducing your finger is somehow acting as that faulty component and turning the light off. The only way to know for sure is if somebody else has this exact model of HP. I'd try defaulting the BIOS, as you have and then maybe try updating the BIOS or power management firmware in Windows maybe ACPI or management engine, those sort of drivers. Another thing to try is taking the SSD out and powering it on and off to see if it still does it. If it still stays on then it's probably the system BIOS/UEFI (if it's not a hardware fault).

It is most likely a Windows setting in Power Options and option to change behaviour of the power button. In the state you have, the power led on all the time is indicating hibernation mode. To get back is usually a press of say, the Esc key or other keyboard key top wake it up. In hibernation mode, power is always on but just enough to keep RAM alive etc for anything stored in it as it is Volatile Memory. Hence, power led always on even though you press the actual laptop power button. IF the power button behaviour is set to hibernate, it will NEVER shutdown even though many may think it would. The behaviour has been changed from shutdown to hibernate. IF the power button is set to Hibernate in power options in Windows, this may leave the power led always on as in principal, the laptop IS on in hibernation mode as it needs power to keep items in RAM for when it starts back up. Simple answer to check? windows power options advanced view to see the power button behaviour. It is possible for sleep too so nothing wrong with the laptop, just simple user error. IF the power button is set to hibernate in advanced power options then this simply explains the behaviour of the power led always on. The system is overridden by the OS. NOT a hardware issue but an OS and user issue I am afraid, most of the time. This is usually the problem. This has been a setting for a very long time and does actually produce this behaviour on many laptops. From slow blinking power led to solid power led light. IF you mess with the electronics in this situation you can actually create a problem when there was none. Not all power button iss8ues will be from hardware issues. type in search (usually on taskbar) Control Panel change the view from category (right hand side and up a bit. (view by category)) change to a size of icons you want select Power Options on the left you should see several options, click on Choose what the power buttons do Power is usually the option for shutdown (When I press the power button: Shutdown) if this is set to hibernate then that is all the power button will ever do leaving a power led on all the time. this option means hibernate doesn't have to be a power option, just clicking the power button on the laptop will put it into hibernate. If the following is the end result: search on taskbar->Control Panel->if in Category mode change to icons->Power Options->Choose what the power buttons do->when I press the power button: Hibernate then change the last to shutdown so like below: search on taskbar->Control Panel->if in Category mode change to icons->Power Options->Choose what the power buttons do->when I press the power button: Shutdown
