Love this in my kitchen. Keep it in my knife drawer and strop and sharpen a lot more, and quicker now that I do it more often. Use it right before I start using a knife.

I enjoy using Sharpel Buddyguard model. You can use your thigh as a workbench when sitting. Sheath doubles as a leather strop. Small and flat, travels well. I prefer to put a drop or two of water on the diamond, that helps the materal to run off. Camping is a must with it. Barely us my four stones with oil anymore!

That's my favourite sharpener, so convenient, I have 2. You can sharpen anything with it and it does everything you need. I also use a larger diamond stone and a bigger strop when I want to get a bit sharper.

I tried this one out but still prefer Worksharp. I was having same issue not able to get heel of the blade, and I don’t like having to go over/under to sharpen both sides of the blade. I would love to see something like this but with guides on both ends of the abrasive like the Worksharp, narrower guides that don’t bump up against handles and thumb studs, and instead of adjustable guides, maybe the cylinder itself could rotate to line up with fixed guides set at different angles.

I like the idea. I’ve been using an old Smiths brass handled diamond rod that extends and retract from it. It came in a pocket sized leather sheath or slip. I’ve taken one each of the ceramic rods from a Lansky wooden block guided sharpener and put them in the sheath with the diamond rod. Then I made a strop from a 12” paint stick and leather that I have rubber banded multiple grits of wet/dry sandpaper and a piece of grey Scotchbrite around it. Both items are very light and easy to pack. I may have to try your new one if not just for the longer thinner rod’s. That small pick rod looks lick it would be great for chain saws as well.

I have a 12" long ceramic roof with a wooden handle. It's 1" in diameter. It's still great for the recurve blades. That plus a few coarse diamond flats and a leather belt and a large stone. I'm golden. When I'm in the field I have a credit card sized diamond flat. Those are all an ideal combo but it tends toward nice edges leaving home and just functional maintenance until I get back home. Good enough

So funny, I always find it MUCH easier to hold my knives in my lap closer to my knees, edge facing out and upward at my desired angle. Then I move the sharpener along the edge back and forth, rather than moving my knife along the sharpener. For me, it's much faster and consistent. That would make the Sharpel ideal for my style of sharpening.

It looks interesting and I can see some benefits, but nothing to make me replace my WorkSharp. 🤷🏼

I own both. I'm not sure which one I prefer. Sometimes I'm clumsy and slip off the Sharpen scratching my blade on the aluminium knob. Still it offers plenty of options.

Any tape will solve the problem. Schrinking tupe would be really neat.

The angle guides as with most angle guides only work on knives that have the same behind the edge thickness all the way through. So really only kitchen knives work else your angle will end up being much steeper than you may like.
@jusme8060Ай бұрын
They should make some resin bonded or metal bonded options. Plates get worn fairly quickly for me personally. There appears to be a giant gap in the market when it comes to sharpening recurve knives. There are not many great options as far as I've seen. I like the adjustable ramp idea, they should perfect that and put it on everything
@thepipensparky7127Ай бұрын
Good point on the angle guide hitting the handle/thumb stud. Quick question. Did you try starting with the tip so that by the time you got to the blade portion closest to the handle you were clear of the angle guide? I'd be interested to know if that would work. Thanks for the video!

I like that big kukri. To me, that sharpal is too short for a big knife like that. I need something that long in addition to the handle. I draw the edge towards the sharpener and finish with a couple of strokes away. I'm not fond of draw through sharpening. But if I was, I'd get one, and it would be much smaller. I use foot long 600gr, 1200gr diamond rods along with a foot long ceramic rod. I also have a foot long steel just for straightening out the edge. For me, a big knife needs fairly long sharpeners. I freehand my angles. I just copy the angle already on the blade. I have been sharpened knives for over half a century... My Dad taught me when I was in grade school. I wore a few out learning. After a while, you get a feel for it. 😊

What about just taking out the rods and using separately? That’s possible no?

G'day Aaron, yeah a handle on the WS is really the only thing missing. Btw I found an old torch pouch that fits it perfectly. Odd they went to all the trouble of having an adjustable guide that falls short of the mark. Pleased to see the price is the same for both, I did think the Sharpal would be more expensive. Personally I've come to the conclusion that these are ideal for a toolbox and car camping, though I reckon there's too much going on for on the trail. i.e. If you head out with a great edge, "should" ; ) only be touch ups to do. I'm currently using a DC3 plate, though I am looking at a simple dual grit job with a handle, then I'll sheath it in a scrap of leather. i.e. the same as the DC3, but with a handle, as is, I haven't drawn blood yet, though to be honest, a few near misses ; ) Cheers Duke.

Work sharp should make replaceable rubber plastic angle pads for the field sharpener. I was hoping they would eventually do that but idk. So if they see this and do end up making them, just let me get the credit lol.

I'd like to build my own portable system eventually that will still fit in a backpack. There's no substitute for having that nearly one foot length of sharpening media. These portable systems are too short to get that nice sweep I get with my bench stones.

Non of these can beet the dmt diafold for lightweight portable ultra effective sharpeners.

Both systems get contaminated! For small touch ups it's okay I guess

A pull through sharpener would be more effective and much smaller, if you can't use proper sharpening techniques (constructive criticism)
