A new battle of faith is being driven by some pastors and politicians in the United States.

@@allandill2033 Have you read the history, native populations were not genocided, they were wiped out becoz they didn't have resistence to new diseases and less than 2000 were shipped as slaves out of the population of nearly six million. So, though techinacally correct, you lack the historical perspective. Conquistadors also brought Christianity, these people offered human sacrifice of entire defeated tribes, they also brought, horse, and education and healthcare, for every fortification built, they also established a mission, some still operate. You wouldn't be able to step in Latin America had not the Conquistadors arrived. And they would have probably be attacking nations and offering you as human sacrifice if Conquistadors. The change you see has not come by itself.it's the Christianity effect.

@@magatism there were many more slaves than only 2000. Plus, the spanish used slaves in South America, so they really didnt have to export them. And that's not including the "encomiendas", where the indigenous people would be put under forced labor as tribute and rewards for the conquest. The rape children of these "encomiendas" were called "mullato's" and became second class citizens for the Spanish. And also not to mention the Asiento de Negros, which gave the Spanish monopolistic control over the African slave trade and ensured slave labor would reign in the region well into the 1800's. That is what actually happened. Didn't they also welcome the Spanish until they imprisoned Montezuma? I'll make sure not to hold their leader hostage so I shouldn't have to worry about them sacrificing me. I'll just also ignore all of the other major tribes that would be in the region and didn't have human sacrifice. 🙄 Read the book: Lies My History Teacher Told Me. You will realize how much bullshit the "Spanish saved the South Americans" really is based on first hand writings.

(1) George Washington, the first president of the United States, never declared himself a Christian according to contemporary reports or in any of his voluminous correspondence. (2) John Adams, the country's second president, wrote, “This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!" (3) It was during Adam's administration that the Senate ratified the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which states in Article XI that "the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion." (The Character of John Adams by Peter Shaw, pp. 17 (1976, North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, NC) (4) Thomas Jefferson, third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, referred to the Revelation of St. John as "the ravings of a maniac" ( Thomas Jefferson, an Intimate History by Fawn M. Brodie, p. 453 (1974, W.W) Norton and Co. Inc. New York, NY). (5) James Madison, fourth president and father of the Constitution, wrote, "Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise. . . pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution" (The Madisons by Virginia Moore, P. 43 (1979, McGraw-Hill Co. Yes. But we've been saying for the past 30 years that schools don't teach civics anymore, etc. But it isn't just the product of those "failed" modern schools that is so clueless. There are so many people who went to school in the 50's 60's, 70's, who think that there will be military tribunals and summary executions of civilians... and they seem to believe that is a _legal_ solution to political differences. The problem isn't the lack of education, the problem is the growing push of extremism and the failure to confront it.

If you're a Christian, you would know the characteristics of Jesus. Jesus would never engage in "casual locker room talk" that invites power over another person, making statements like "grab her by the [cat]". Jesus would never go up to hurricane victims and playfully toss toilet paper at them and ask meaningless questions like "Is that your boat?". Jesus would never brag about his "crowd size" as if that's what mattered. Jesus would never incite mob violence to give himself power. The list goes on and on. Why conservative Republicans chose such a man as their champion for "Christian" values, I have been left guessing for the last 6 years.

When you read the New Testament, you see that Jesus was quite progresive. He spoke to women, spoke to children. He told women that their spiritual life is more important that their work in households. He told people not to blindly follow rule but follow their hearts instead. He helped people even if it offended those with traditional values. He insisted that following tradition is not as important as to love. It is so strange for me to see that this group of fanatics have completely lost sight of the fact that their country was founded on the principle of freedom - and now want to undermine religious freedom so fundamentally. Not to mention the fact that true Christians would respect and honour every other religion and approach it with open arms. Reminder: love your neighbour as yourself. But then to boast of being "Christian nationalists" and to radically ban other religions from social coexistence, to want to link government and religion so closely together is nothing other than fascism for me.

Our first pastor was one of the kindest, most knowledgeable and compassionate men I will ever meet. He was well loved, even today many years after his passing. And his replacement was a man who felt we needed to be scared into loving Jesus! He was quite a fear preacher and slowly but surly saw his congregation decline. What's that saying... The first crusaded were launched by a man now called Saint Irenaeus in the between the year 150-200 against other Christians who did not fall under the Catholic church. Part of the dead sea scrolls are remains of those Christians that were killed which historians group as Gnostic Christians because nothing survives of any organization if they had one since they did not believe that a orthodoxy was needed to be Christians, they were peaceful and believed in meditating to escape the hell of our physical bodies. @@brainstem2023 Many stories in the bible lack any historical evidence. The Jews enslaved in Egypt, Noah's Ark, a worldwide flood, the resurrection of a savior, etc, lack evidence. Not only that, but research has revealed that many of the stories in the bible are recycled tales from even older civilizations. One notable example is from the Epic of Gilgamesh, which pre-dates the writing of the bible by nearly 1000 years. It contains a story extremally similar to Noah's Ark and the great flood, only with small details differing here and there from the biblical version. The idea a savior in the form of god's son has also been used in numerous ancient cultures long before Christianity or any other modern segmented religion adapted the tale. It's important to realize that these stories have nothing to do with science. A lack of science is actually what allowed these stories to spread and flourish thousands of years ago.

ALL the amendments are necessary I should remind you, and from a historical standpoint, the 2nd is vital despite what the media harps on. But most Americans do not have a clue as to the importance of any of them, or our foundations in the English Common Law which our judicial system is founded upon. “Must men alone be debarred the common privilege of opposing force with force, which nature allows so freely to all other creatures for their preservation from injury? I answer: self defense is a part of the law of nature, nor can it be denied the community, even against the king himself...” ~JOHN LOCKE (“Two Treatises of Government”, 1689) “THE RIGHT TO ARMS: The fifth and last auxiliary right of the subject, that I shall at present mention, is that of having arms for their defence, suitable to their condition and degree, and such as are allowed by law.... And, lastly, to vindicate these rights, when actually violated or attacked, the subjects of England are entitled, in the first place, to the regular administration and free course of justice in the courts of law; next, to the right of petitioning the king and parliament for redress of grievances; and, lastly, to the right of having and using arms for self-preservation and defense.” ~Commentaries on the Laws of England, Sir William Blackstone, 1765 "Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good." ~George Washington [GW also said that only "peaceable" citizens should be allowed arms, interesting thought...] With all of that in mind, let's apply it to the liberty of conscience and church and state. One of the threats that aroused our people to revolt against Royal usurpation of "the rights of Englishmen" was the effort to establish Bishops over America, an attempt to bring the colonists more under the authority of the state religion. [another argument against the Christian right] and most of us back then did not care for organized religion or the King's church. Most Americans were free thinkers at the time, not dedicated fundamentalist Christians, as the theocracy crowd would have us believe. As a last resort they called out the militia to resist and took up arms against the Crown. A final thought, "We have solved...the great and interesting question whether freedom of religion is compatible with order in government and obedience to the laws. And we have experienced the quiet as well as the comfort which results from leaving everyone to profess freely and openly those principles of religion which are the inductions of his own reason and the serious convictions of his own inquiries." ~Thomas Jefferson to Virginia Baptists, 1808

I find it odd how this headline calls it “the new Christian right.” I’m a 34-year-old American and I grew up DEEP in this crap in the 90s (in “liberal Oregon”), just like my parents did in the 60s, and so on. This stuff is hardly new! I ended up leaning and moving to Australia when I was 20, and then settled in Ireland when I was 23 and have been here since… and I find a lot of people abroad know little about how prevalent the fundamentalist, anti-science crowd is all over the US.

"The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature: and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history...It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had any interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the inspiration of heaven, any more than those at work upon ships or houses, or labouring in merchandize or agriculture: it will for ever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses..... Unembarrassed by attachments to noble families, hereditary lines and successions, or any considerations of royal blood, even the pious mystery of holy oil had no more influence than that other of holy water: the people universally were too enlightened to be imposed on by artifice; and their leaders, or more properly followers, were men of too much honour to attempt it. Thirteen governments thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favour of the rights of mankind.” ~John Adams, A Defense of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America 1787

Well, yes, the Puritans who arrived in America did escape England because of religious intolerance. However, the Puritans' own religious views were also highly intolerant of non-Puritans. They wanted to create a theocracy, a godly society based solely on Puritan ideas, one in which non-Puritans would be second-class citizens. The fact that they didn't get to do that in England is what they considered intolerance and made them leave for America. This is a theme one can still see in the language of the religious right in the US: when the religious don't get to discriminate people according to their faith, they call that persecution.

I've been a Christian for 45 years - not only is there not a political party that accurately depicts / represents Jesus or the Gospel, there are few if any churches that do, either. What the word "Christian", or the name "Jesus", actually mean is up for debate. I'm not saying Christians should not run for office or be politically motivated, but let's be very careful about imposing our own ethos onto Jesus.

They live to treat each other with respect as long as it follows the bible, and they just won't associate with who they consider sinners. I bet that in modern world, he would be a feminist and an LGBTIQ+ ally.

the uk has been funding religious terrorists for well over half a century now. they need people like that in power of as many places as possible because its the easiest way for them to be able to control other countries if they only have to negotiate with a few people instead of everyone in the country. easy way to keep your power is to make sure no one with the will to challenge you is allowed to stay alive. since religion indoctrinates people into not seeking rebellion against their oppressors, its monarchs favorite way to control populations.

While these other churches are advocating for a reduction of freedom for some and an expansion of freedom for only themselves. For example they advocate for the right for businesses to discriminate against people on a religious basis. Back in the 1960s that often included racial discrimination as well as orientation and religion. Today so far it is only orientation and reproductive health. Black churches have historically advocated for anti discrimination laws so that everyone can expect to be treated the same regardless. In this respect I feel that Christian nationalists are fundamentally anti constitutionalists. Where as Black churches have historically been proponents of constitutional rights.
