How a Nigerian Family Built an Amazing Medical Empire in Nigeria is another episode of my Made in Africa series where I feature black entrepreneurs all across Africa who have built successful businesses and they tell us how they did it.
Today's episode is Dr Bode Karunwi who is a Nigerian entrepreneur who built a successful Dental Health Business in Nigeria from the ground up with his wife Mrs Laite Karunwi in Lagos Nigeria. They shares their story on how they were able to build this business in Africa and some of the challenges they have faced on their entrepreneurial journey.

David, Don't be deceived by the God calling of our people. The nations that don't call God in every statement are more honest than us. Our politicians call God or Allah every second and that doesn't stop them from stealing and killing. I think relying on God is even more detrimental to us cos we don't know how to balance God and reality. If someone dies of potholes on our roads, we will say God took him away. Technically, the politicians that stole the money to fix the road took him away untimely. I believe in God, maybe if every African including our leaders believe our destinies are in our hands not in anyone in the sky, we would have turned things around.
@rebel4721
@rebel4721 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe that's our biggest problem. You ask a white/Asian man the secret to his success and he'll say: “I had a business plan but it wasn't perfect, so I had help from one of my friends already in the business in improving the plan. This helped me secured a loan from my bank.” But you ask the same question to an African and he'll say: “My brother, na God o.” If you also wanted to start a similar business which of these responses would help you? And we wonder why others are leaving us behind. Religion definitely has its merits, but ascribing all of our successes solely to prayers and fasting is a massive detriment for our collective growth.

I'm always grateful when I see ventures like this. Not everyone go for dental checkup because of the non awareness and affordability. What a lot of people are not aware of is that bad dental (tooth and gum disease) affects the health. It could lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, infertility, cancer, magriane etc. There should be more awareness on dental care in Nigeria. (Prevention is better than cure) Preventing a disease is better than waiting for the disease to come up full force. I like the insight and the simplicity of the doctor. - Thanks Tayo for sharing this.

Bad governance, nepotism and rabid religiosity dragged Nigeria down. We grew up learning a lot by just watching TV, we had programmes like Mastermind, Take a Chance and you learnt grammar, syntax and current affairs by listening to the 9pm news. It’s unfortunate for those growing up today that most of the characters referred to as leaders are no more than imbecilic criminals. Nigeria of the 70s punched well above its weight. Dr Karunwi should be a trainer: seems calm, lavishly articulate and experienced. He has the gravitas of the old well heeled Nigerian middle class (unlike today’s flippant nouveau). Besides, are there any guarantee of security of lives and property beyond the gated enclaves of the ultra wealthy?

@@juanfernandapique7499 After oil profits made by Nigeria, the second largest foreign exchange earner for Nigeria is remittances from abroad. Nigeria has a small percentage of super rich while everyone else is suffering and smiling. I see some of the comments thanking and encouraging you on, for shining the light on and celebrating a people the rest of tbe world, and its media, would have everyone believe do not exist and, whose existence is an impossibility i.e. good, hard-working, non-corrupt, intelligent, cultured, well-spoken (does anyone else not just hate when you're watching British or American or wherever tv drama, comedy or a movie, and there's a 'Nigerian' character or characters, and the producers and directors clearly think all that's necesssary to sound Nigerian is to speak like this (or, rather, like dis): "De man said", "Dat is", "Dis is", "My fada", "Dia moda", "Diz guyz", and then for a little variety: "Plenty wahala". Just turn "th" to "d" and that's all there is to being a Nigerian!), integrity-exhibiting, and who clearly don't settle for less NIGERIANS! And, who, also,.do not agree that less is good enough to offer and give to Nigerians, because, after all, they're only Nigerians. I think such comments, complimenting you and highlighting the need for such global publicity, are more apt than those who wrote them realise. This is because sometime in the past few months of this year (and not in relation to your guest), I checked for the meaning of the name Karounwi. It is the contraction of the phrase: Ki a (or: K'a) ri ohun wi. Meaning, literally: "That we might have something to say." Meaning, by intention i.e. the full, deeper, nuanced, actual meaning: "That we might have something to answer in reply." In the face of, and to all the negative press about, and to the haters of Nigeria, what you and others like you are doing, showcasing the Nigerians you showcase, is highly necessary. So that ... Karounwi.

Madt ohhh. So, his uncle borrowed him today's equivalence of N8,798,400 or $21,363 if we adjust with the current official exchange rate of N411(September 2021). Plus good economy then ohh. Now with the money adjust to today's value you might not be able to pull this. I just pray god delivered us in this country.

I totally agree with him, in the short run we may see it as "brain drain " but like he said I believe it's "brain gain" (long term). We are all over the world learning thier trades, tricks , languages, templates. Imagine all this manpower coming back home, it will be formidable ! God at times works in mysterious ways if everything was honky dory people would have been content and nobody pushed to go see what the competition is doing. I honestly see a fantastic future

As a dentist I can confirm that Schubbs dental is the most modern and best in this country. The most impressive thing is how they’ve been ahead of time. Contemporary procedures and good patient care. Lol this is free PR but it’s finally good to see them get this recognition. World class clinic for sure.

Whoever liked my earlier comment: thank you; GOD BLESS you. Specifically because your like got me thinking some more about what I'd written/said. Thinking some more about the name Karounwi. I realised a few minutes ago that it has yet another meaning. This meaning is beautifully complementary to and powerfully backs up the meaning I spoke about and mentioned and the thoughts I expressed in my earlier comment. Karounwi, spoken/pronounced with a slightly different intonation on one syllable, also means "That we might have a VOICE with which to speak (& implied: with which to answer)." GOD has raised you - and others like you who are doing this with honesty, intelligence, integrity, a great work ethic, and with the fear of GOD - to be a voice for Africa; to be a voice of the Truth and of the Beauty and of the Creativity and of the Diversity and of the Intelligence and of Diligence and of the incredible Work Ethic and of the Integrity and of the Good Hearts of Africa (most especially and specifically black Africa) and of its people. In the midst of and from the very centre of the world's marketplace, where its vendors and towncriers i.e. the global media are conspired in an evil agenda to bring and to keep Africa in servitude and slavery; which they do by actively and only seeking the negative and then presenting only that negative; and, not satisfied with that, more often than not, even further twisting and skewing that negative, to create the maximum shock or comedic value to their audiences, to sell out their copies and boost their ratings. All these working in tandem with the true and self-serving agendas of their home governments. It's just the same with individuals as with families, communities, and nations. If a false, evil narrative and/or picture is consistently given and painted about a person, it discourages and turns away intending helpers, blessors, investors, sponsors, friends, business partners, employers, promoters, suitors, spouses, in-laws, opportunities, etc. It can turn away from thst person's life: good, lifting, blessings, breakthroughs; it can ensure that person's head is never lifted up; that his or her destiny never comes to light, never shines, that his or her own Day never comes, that his or her glory remains covered, hidden away by a thick veil of darkness, and is never revealed, so that that person never becomes, never manifests as the blessing to the world that he or she was born and destined and created to be. The same evil strategy is utilised for individuals and nations and races. In the midst of the loud cacophony of strident, mocking, shrieking propaganda, scornfully, disdainfully and contemptuously unfurling the usual poster of poverty, of total consumerism, of grossly corrupt, colossally inept and incompetent, unintelligent, poorly educated, short-sighted, beyond embarrassingly archaic, arrogant, evil, tyrannical, narcissistic, crude and backward rulers (not leaders), of retardation in infrastructural development, of violence, of Africa the country - in their minds, of ugly slums, of children with kwashiokor-stick legs and arms and swollen bellies and faces seemingly home to flies, etc; you, and the others of this different spirit, show, highlight, flaunt, showcase, shine the light on the paradox which is nevertheless, THE reality. AFRICA. GOD bless and keep you all.
