I have a simple painting my father brought back from Germany after WWII. Artists were starving and they would paint on anything to earn money. This one was printed on the back of part of a beer crate wooden box. I just find the backstory interesting.

This is a very informative video and I have one very lovely old old painting in fact I think I have two or three but one in particular that I am going to get you to appraise for me however I have one question is it very old painting with the Magnificent elaborate gold frame has a tiny shall I say half inch cut in the canvas. I got this at a secondhand store and I didn't notice the slice until I got it home and hung it up on the wall. I love the painting it was so beautiful and old and I think I paid less than 20 dollars for it.. So I know that probably depreciates the whole thing and that really bothers me because I thought all this is such a lovely beautiful old old antique painting and I picked it up after I watched this video along with all your other videos on Art and paintings and I'm glad I watch your videos because I have bought things in the past that fool me. So my question to you is how much has this art depreciated buy 3/4 by half?? Just wonderful to look at and I still enjoy it up on the wall with no heat under the painting and no direct sunlight.

Hi Dr. Lori, I have a painting that I bought at a resale store. The picture is of a bridge that has little shops built on it (the bridge). It is signed, but the signature is a fancy type that I can not make out. There is a date on the back of the painting as well as a newspaper clipping showing the date that the picture was taken. I've watched programs on tv saying that the more information about the painting maybe the more valuable it could be. I think the date is in the 1935 era. My question I guess is, is there a fee to send pictures to you via email? Thank you very much... :)

There are many ways to fake age on a painting... both front and back. Also many old valuable paintings have new canvas lining. Best way to know the value of a painting is to ask an expert.

What if the back of the painting has brown paper on it can we remove that paper and check or does the paper add a certain value to it?

If you are sure it’s only brown paper and not part of the work, it can be removed. It’s always a good idea to keep anything on the back with the piece.

HI dr Lori. Just looking at some of the art I bought in thrift store years ago and really never knew anything about them till I started to watch you. I just found one of my I guess is water color by artist Gary Bukorvik I think it's water color of a white hibiscus ? On lower left bottom has AP 1/15 and on right lower right his signature in pencil with a white stamp I guess you say. I tried looking it up but Do you think it's valuable. Can you say ? Will the sides of the canvas stay light when protected by the frame while the back darkens with age? Do the nail heads have to be square on older painting?

I have some really old paintings that this sweet woman gave me that she received from her dad in 1923 he kept them in a trash bag and they are still in great condition. I wish I new What they was worth but in time I am sure I can find out .
