7:25 It's not guessing anymore when the greenbook is measured using an inclinometer. Reading a green visually however will *always* be guessing. Get 10 golfers to visually read a green and you *may* get 10 reads, get 10 AP and you will get 5 with 2, 4 with 3 and 1 outlier freak (always one guy). On straight putts AP will beat visual reads everytime, flat is flat is flat. On many occasions the horizon, the edge of green or the green will look like there's drop but doing a quick AP step shows a straight putt and that is reassuring for me, personally.

I'm a Civil/Transportation engineer and all of those numbers blew my mind. Especially the green book. It's too complex to mix number AND colors. The yardage book was a little bit easier to comprehend but what threw me was the number near the bunkers. Is that the number of players/balls expected to land in said bunker during that tournament? On another note, a bridge in Indiana that I am the chief design engineer on is opening to public traffic this weekend. I want to invite any number of your subscribers to celebrate en masse with a free drive across my bridge. Let's meet at the Walmart and then we'll convoy over. You in?

Terrific video . Originally yardage books were prepared by caddies and were proprietary but a uniform format emerged. Now garmins and shotscope have largely tendered them unnecessary for amateurs but of course these devices are not allowed for pro tournaments. Lasers also give you even easier knowledge. The nightmarish but informative green mapping was banned i believe because the governing bodies felt it took green reading skill out of the game. I may be a little off on this as i have made extensive use of yardage books but the green mapping was a little too complicated for my small brain.

The pro yardage book is meant to be used with the daily pin sheet, which tells how many paces on the green the hole is cut, and often it says how many paces laterally to the nearest edge so the pro can assess if it is worth the risk to aim at the flag to risk being short-sided. I know this because I am a professional caddie.

Very interesting, Gen, now I know what you all look at before every shot. Sometime, in another vlog, I would like to see/hear how you, as a pro player, work with a caddy to get ready for a tournament. What do you both do to prepare once you get to the course and you are ready to play a practice round? What / how does the caddy assist you to get ready to play your best and to continue to assist you as you are playing?

Really interesting to see the detail pros have at their disposal. Of course, they have the skill to use it better than we mere amateurs. I agree with you the simple book is enough. In fact, to make the game more interesting at the pro level, why not limit the information in the book for tournaments? I don't know when such detail came into the game, but my guess is the old players back in the early/mid (maybe even later) 20th century had to judge with their eyes and had limited info. Much more skill needed in those days for sure. Very cool to see all this.Thanks.
@jonasohlen5802
@jonasohlen5802 2 жыл бұрын
In the old days caddies had to work harder in advance to "pace the course" or later walk with a measuring wheel to basically create a more detailed "yardage book" by them selves.

Thanks Michael. Yeah the technology is there but it is expensive to reproduce it for every club I guess. Excellent video. I guess the closes to a yardage book is my Garmin hand held gps. It shows the hole with all the hazards ( I think 40,000 courses around the world). You can move the distance to the hazard to know the carry or to lay up. It doesn’t have the green reading but it really helps to plan around any course, even when you are on another fairway and don’t have line of sight.

I think it’s hard to because as much as the book shows, we still have to see what’s in front of us. Other factors such as wind and ground conditions can also affect the game plan on a given day so I think the yardage book is a good guide but not something we can also just follow blindly (in a sense) although I do get what you’re saying!

Gen, With regards to aimpoint and the green reading books . The green books give percent of slope . Aimpoint uses degrees of slope . 1.75%=1 degrees, so if your viewers want to try to utilize aimpoint, they’ll need to do the math accordingly. Your example of 2.9 % and using 3 fingers to read the break is inaccurate …..it would actually be inside of two fingers on the read for the break . Great content, just thought I’d share this with your viewers. Cheers 🍻

the Yardage book and Green books provide as much, if not "more" information than a laser rangefinder or a GPS device, I cannot see why professional golfers can use this collated information and not use a laser range device or a GPS device. Eventually these devices will be allowed. they are certainly allowed at club level golf by virtue of a local rule. They do not diminish the skill required to play golf, players still have to contact the sweet spot of the club onto the ball and play the ball as it lies.

It is a stupid introduction to the game. Professionals? I think professional golfers are becoming less and less reliant on talent, ability and knowledge to the extent that caddies have become a necessary aid than should be the case. I would like to see caddies banned from reading lines on the Greens and a time limit further imposes on time play shots. Come on players. Play golf.
