How come you’re raid 5 has only given you half of the capacity?

A couple of errors in this. RAID 5 will not halve the capacity. You will lose the capacity of one drive, meaning for your 8 drive setup you will have 7/8 of the capacity available for storage. Error 2, the two smaller drives "up top" cannot be in a RAID 5. RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives. These two drives would more likely be in a RAID 1, or possibly a RAID 0.
