Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies. Since the invention of the first sewing machine, generally considered to have been the work of Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790, the sewing machine has greatly improved the efficiency and productivity of the clothing industry.
How a Sewing Machine Works
A common sewing machine design uses a floating shuttle hook. The floating hook design allows a top thread loop to pass completely around the bobbin assembly. A lock stitch is formed when the top thread has looped completely around the bottom thread. The take-up lever ensures a tight stitch.

Btw, my grandma had a Singer, which belonged to her parents during World War 2. They survived by fixing people's coats and other clothes. I used to play with it as a kid - sat under it on the foot platform and spun the wheel, pretending it was a ship.

It still boggles my mind how it works. The bobbin is not suspended in the air! It's on some kind of axel holding it. So how can the thread loop go around it? It's like a magic trick with an invisible thread :p

I'm telling you man... That thing is flying. Its alien tech. 4D timey spacey anti gravity. Its not actually in our dimension. The metallic material is not on our periodic table. the govt try to cover this and hunting me. So I must tell you. Quick, tell everyone!! I might get disappear soon, so listen up cos I don't have much time. The secret is on how to mine the phasing magic metal. It's located in th-

Exaclty. I’m looking for a video that shows those parts up close, maybe disassembled or explains exactly how the shuttle is kept in place while allowing the thread to pass

I might be wrong, but as engineer i could think of a solution. Bobbin would have no any attachement to the shuttle hook. Shuttle hook is attached to the rod that controls it's movement. But bobbin is just a thread. My solution would be a compartment that is held in place by some loose slots, smooth enough to not make a thread get cathced by any sharp edge, but loose enough, so bobbin could move a bit when thread comes throug the slots. Those "slots" would be just some smoothe dents to keep the bobbin in place. Animation on the left would be a bit wrong in that case, since we see thread comeng around all of the mechanism, and shuttle hook must have a motion transfered to it. The video on the right however shows that thread never comes around whole mechanism, but only around the bobbin.

@@EvanSawyer4 If you haven't figured it out, look up "How a sewing machine works - Animagraffs", it has a transparent 3d model that shows you how it works. The diagram on the left here is acually a lot harder to make than the right one as the spool is depicted to be stationary, which is partially possible using something that stops it from rotating on a track within the pin. Which is a lot harder than just having it rotate on the inside.

There's a flaw in the animation. Look at the real footage of a sewing machine on the right. The spool rocks back and forth instead of rotating completely around. The animation has the thread loop passing through the axis on the other of the bobbin. Which in that type of machine it doesn't do. Modern machines perform by tangling the bobbin thread like you would wrap a single thread into a loose with your finger. The top thread is passed through that loop. As then through the spinning of your finger combined with pulling the tension on the threads, the loop is pulled off your finger from the tip. This video has better animation to show it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIK8pqx-g7GDirM I've always wondered how sewing machines worked. I wondered how does the thread get woven into the fabric just from passing in and out from the top. I didn't even know that there was a second spool of thread below the part that has the needle.

I wonder how much time, and how many prototypes they made in order to perfect its design, and manufacturing tolerances.
