@poopity scoop the security was good enough, it held for a couple of years, and the flaws were patched somewhat quickly, their job isn't to make it unhackable, it's to make it hold long enough that they can sell games on it and the publishers make games on the console. most hacks look quite simple once you know them, but it's like finding a password is *Po123ny456*, once you know it, it's easy to login, but if you have to guess it's really hard.

One of the biggest ironies of the whole cracking 3DS firmware and Nintendo desperately trying to patch it with every iteration of their own firmware... Homebrew Launcher did not, in of itself, allow piracy. It enabled it, sure, but it also came with a bunch of cool features like customization options. Actually being able to change your 'wallpaper' background of your 3DS system, and alter the background music of the homescreen to anything. Nintendo, for whatever reason and even to this day, does not support minimal customization of your device. You can't put an image file on your SD card and use that as your background. You either choose their default colors or nothing at all. You can't even buy 'themes' as you can with your PS4 for example. They are VERY stubborn, and even that might be an understatement. That is but one example. Instead of adopting the more 'freeing,' user friendly and relatively harmless features/benefits of custom firmware... They chose to crack down on custom firmwares/exploits to install custom firmware without providing an alternative or an incentive NOT to jailbreak your 3DS. So can they really be surprised that hackers were relentless? And if you look at the PC as a platform... Nobody cares that you 'save edit' or use cheats in a single player game. And that has birthed amazing modding communities for all sorts of games, developers even embrace it and offer out opensource 'mod kits' to modders so that they can DESIGN content for their games that other players can use as they see fit. Just look at Skyrim or any Bethesda game for that matter. We've all probably played Skyrim with mods. You could make the argument that such games and the experience are improved by mods. Even Valve has Steam workshop and practically encourages players TO download mods for applicable games. Imagine Breath of the Wild with community created mods. A mod that removes the durability system so that players who dislike that can experience the game the way they want, if they so chose. Whole new areas, towns, weapons, armor, quests. Replacing Link's character model with Zelda. Right now that's impossible because not only does Nintendo not support it, but with every Switch game, your save file is saved to the device and linked to your account on it. You know what allows you to save on your SD card, inject different save files and harmlessly 'cheat' or 'soft mod' games? Custom firmware. Yet another incentive for hackers to use custom firmware and continue to find exploits, while Nintendo continues to be stubborn for no reason. It's an incentive that wouldn't EXIST if Nintendo offered support for things like that. I can understand wanting to crackdown on piracy. What I can't understand is why, as a platform creator, you would not want to make piracy the ONLY reason for hackers to exploit and install a custom firmware. You don't have to like people modding, save editing, using their own backgrounds/homescreen music etc. You DO, however, have to wise up and understand that the more concessions you make (the less incentives you give hackers to hack your own platform), then the less incentives those hacking communities will have to do it in the first place. More features, less hackers. Less hackers, more secure platform. More secure platform, less piracy. It's quite that simple.

Shhhhh, you know how stubborn Nintendo is. You're totally right but we have to make them think that all of this was their idea. Seriously, the reason people waited so long to hack the PS3 was because of Linux. It only really ramped up when OtherOS was removed. Coincidence? I think not.

I dont find it ironic at all, their entire security was console based at the time. Piracy was literally just one homebrew app away and for years their entire eshop became "freeshop", including multiplayer until they finally managed to ban people for it. To design it like that was on them but I dont remember any console which made piracy so convenient once cracked.

This was a great summary of the whole saga, although I feel Roxas was painted in an overly positive light (closed source in the homebrew/hacking community is a major dick move) and Smealum was given far too much credit for works he likely never accomplished. He only ever repeated what other hackers would say, and always had convenient excuses why he couldn't follow up on his Q Drops---I mean, his vaguetweets on how "something" is "coming soon" and it "may require something" that you "may or may not" be able to "buy or otherwise find".

You're semi correct on the not being able to mess with 3DS part with DS stuff part. There's also TWL mode (aka DSi mode). This mode is the enhanced version of DS mode. In that mode you can mess with 3DS stuff! Because of how TWL mode works and that it requires NAND access for DSiWare, that means that you can access ALL of NAND from it. TWL_FIRM (the software responsible for setting up legacy mode, aka DS/DSi mode) isn't able to actually restrict physical NAND read/writes to just the TWLN/TWLP partitions. (the partitions used by DSiWare/DSi Photos). As a result you can write to any part of the NAND. Normally this wouldn't be useful (aside from doing NAND backups I guess) since NAND is encrypted...BUT... There are known flaws in the FIRM partition encryption scheme that can be exploited by having a plain text version of a FIRM partition. As a result you could alter FIRM partitions from TWL mode (FIRM partitions are used during early boot process on 3DS and are responsible for booting up the full 3DS mode firmware). The only requirement is finding an exploitable DSiWare app to run homebrew code from. Which isn't that hard really. Apparently there's quite a few that's been found to be exploitable recently. :P But pure DS mode doesn't have nand access so in that respect you are still correct. Oh and TWL enhanced game carts wouldn't have nand access either despite being in DSi mode. Due to how DSi security was setup, Nintendo didn't allow most/any game carts to have NAND access. Though it was possible with the correct settings in the game header, no game had the settings required to enable it and since DSI Enhanced game header's were RSA protected, you can't just modify them to enable it. As far as I'm aware, only certain DEV flashcarts intended for dev consoles could have it enabled. (stuff like system updaters for updating firmware on dev consoles since they didn't use the normal system update feature that retail consoles used). Dev flashcarts can't be used on retail due to having different blowfish keys and such. Besides the dev software you'd write to such a flashcart had "dev signed" RSA headers. Retail consoles don't use the dev keys for RSA signing so they'd reject any dev signed software you tried to throw at it. So instead you'd want to try and exploit DSiWare. But anyways yeah pure DS mode can't touch any 3DS stuff though so I guess your technically correct...the best kind of correct.... :P Also you should cover the DSI at some point. It's recently been hacked and the story on that is interesting since in terms of CFW/full system access, that console had the longest run on being secure in that respect. The first full system access exploit "RocketLauncher" was found only a couple years ago. (and by yours truly...me... :D ). It was never publicly released due to lack of devs to work on install tools for end users to safely install it. But doesn't change the fact that it exists and could have been used to gain control over the system and access all features and allow CFW. I did post videos on it succesfully taking over a DSi. The irony in that exploit is it exploited a flaw in the very system they setup to try and block DS flashcarts. So you could use a modified flashcart with a custom rom to cause an overflow via a modified DS Cart White list file which Nintendo messed up and didn't setup RSA checks for in a specific firmware version. That's the short version. Look up my videos on it for the full explanation on how it works. Info about it on gbatemp too I guess if you want to research that further. Fortunately though a new exploit was found by NoCash called Unlaunch that involved a flaw in Stage2 where Stage2 didn't properly check the filesize of Launcher's TMD file before attempting to load the TMD file into ram (another classic overflow exploit) and he did release that one. RocketLauncher by virtue of being made obsolete by that new exploit hasn't been worked on since then. There's also a recent find by Shutterbug2000 who found some bugs in the SSL certificate security stuff in DSi's network protocol code used by most DSi software and as a result found a big flaw in Nintendo Zone that will allow installing Unlaunch/CFW onto ALL DSi's! It does require a second device to run a rom that hosts a beacon that will enable the Nintendo Zone icon on the target DSi, but once you get the DSi's Nintendo Zone connected to the redirected server (thanks to the above mentioned SSL flaws found), you can fool it into thinking it's connected to a trusted Nintendo server. It turns out Nintendo Zone has literally no checks on the SRLs (the software/roms sent over via wifi) so you can send it a homebrew SRL and as long as the header is in the correct format, it will happily load the thing anyways. :P Shutterbug hasn't release it yet, but he already shown that he used it successfully to install Unlaunch so it's only a matter of time. :D

Oh also I sorta had a hand in the cracking of RXTools. RXTools went partially open-source late in it's life. But the part that contained the code for running emunand remained closed. The guy looking at it was having some difficulty figuring out how the hash check function for RXTools worked as it was needed to modify code sections stored in the compiled RXTools binary. (turned out to be something kinda silly. He laughed at it when he found out how it worked) I noticed that there was code for that was exposed in the part of the source code Roxas made public and pointed it out to him and the rest is history. He probably would have found it eventually. But my part was in accelerating that process. So my part in this was pretty small. I had no hand in distributing it though. As I recall he didn't even have a 3DS to test this on at the time. So I did help test all his experiments/modified payloads on my 3DS for him. my 3DS was quite litearlly the first console that ever booted a successfully cracked version of RXTools. So maybe I did have a slightly larger part in this.... :P No idea if he was the one that "leaked" it on pastebin though. (It wasn't me though. I kept my copy of it private). So for that reason I won't reveal his identity in case he still wants that to remain a secret. Also I kinda forgot exactly who it was anyways. Bad at remembering names and it's been quite some years I can maybe remember if I dig through the old thread history on GBATemp if I really wanted too I guess. This was back when I was still using Skype. LOL Also, I was an early beta tester for pastaCFW/CakesCFW. Can't recall if the two were connected. I think pastaCFW became the name a bit later? I don't recall the details. Shortly after RXTools got cracked I was given the opportunity to test that one was probably only one of a select few that had hands on a copy of that at the time. In the end RXTools got quickly replaced and it looked like that even if RXTools wasn't cracked, something was coming out anyways. Needless to say Roxas was not happy about this and left the scene shortly. Honestly though it was probably inevitable that it was going to get cracked. Just got cracked sooner, because Roxas made the mistake of not using a different hash check function for the "closed" part of his payload. :P EDIT: To correct your video, Roxas made "part" of the RXTools CFW open source. BEFORE the time it got cracked. I don't recall the timing, but it was partially open sourced for some time before it got cracked. Just making that clear. It was the the protected half that booted emunand that he later open sourced after the whole drama over the cracking of it. Oh and boot9strap isn't witch craft. :P At least from my point of view since I have an understanding on how it works. This is already a long winded reply so I won't go into full details. Long story short, it's a bootrom exploit. But yeah the explanation on how it works would probably be considered witch craft by most folks so that's understandable. Needless to say, bootrom can't be patched on 3DS and apparently it would be expensive for Nintendo to change it (would require redesign of SOC/parts used to make SOC at factory and would be hella expensive to do) so that's probably why it was never fixed on n3DS and n2DS console revisions. Sadly this exploit doesn't work on DSi. Their RSA checking code doesn't contain the flaw that the 3DS bootrom has. Not a big deail though. Unlaunch is almost as good. Unlaunch on DSi is sorta similar to arm9loaderhax. arm9loaderhax exploited a flaw in software stored on FIRM partitions of 3DS Nand. On DSi, the equilivent to that is the Stage2 software. It's stored on NAND just like FIRM is. DSi bootrom verifieds and boots stage2 and like on 3DS bootrom is locked by the time stage2 is running. So like with arm9loaderhax, you can have effectively full system control after exploiting it. Just don't have bootrom access like boot9hax on 3DS would have had since the exploit for that one originates in bootrom.

You know, when I got my 3DS XL second hand for around $70 in late 2017, I was quite underwhelmed. I was very used to my PS Vita and its beautiful OLED display, and it was quite hard at first to get used to the screens. But after experiencing the amazing amount of games on the system, I don't mind it anymore. It's also a bit more portable than the Switch, and the battery life is just amazing. And like you said, the homebrew community has made it a great choice for ROM injection. Plus you can now play classic DS games in widescreen, which is mind blowing! As for best handheld, I'd have a really hard time choosing between the PS Vita and 3DS. Because they're backwards compatible with PS1/PSP and VC/GBA/DS respectively, that means they're really strong contenders in my book.

It should be noted that while many of those older hackers were outwardly anti-piracy, many were caught being pirates themselves. The homebrew scenes and piracy scenes were a lot more intertwined than most wanted to admit. Most of this was because the two being connected would put both at risk. But there was also a lot of drama back then in the 3ds and PS3 homebrew scenes. It's the same for some in the emulation scene too. Back before Yuzu's devs got sued, it was pretty common knowledge that the devs of Yuzu were hypocrites. They outwardly pretended to be anti-piracy but were also sharing pirated switch roms with each other on a google drive.
@davidGA殿3 ай бұрын
I understand the yuzu team having a drive full of roms, that’s how they can test the emulator on the games. I don’t think it would be viable for them to buy and rip all the games they would want to use/test.
@AlbedoAtoned3 ай бұрын
@@davidGA殿 Unfortunately, that's still very illegal, and not something you want to brag or talk about in any public manner. And it's not really a good excuse either since they were getting thousands of dollars in revenue from their patreon account. Ultimately, they wanted their project to be seen as clean, free of piracy. They would ban users who mentioned pirating games because they didn't want people to associate Yuzu with it. They even required you to you dump your own key files, and would not provide them. But in the end, they got caught bragging about a google drive where they kept all of their pirated roms. That alone could sink ANY emulator project. Because you can't claim your project has nothing to do with piracy if you yourself are committing piracy in order to create it. It's something no other emulator dev has been caught on as far as I know. Most buy the games they need to test, or they have somebody send their copy to them so they can dump a "legal" copy and test. At the very least, they aren't bringing up their casual piracy on discord for all the world to see.

@@squiddljon I fail to see why. Homebrewing systems gives a greater degree of control. It allows people to bypass region lock, import custom themes, get unlimited save files, and do a whole host of things that you could not do before. The flash cart industry in a nutshell: "Gold for me, but not for thee." Any time a mod chip or flash cart hits the market for a current system, you can bet that at some point, someone's going to decide to at least start destroying clone carts. I get it, at least in a general sense. If you make the best wrench, and you have no legal recourse to deal with competitors using the same design, it'd sure be grand if those clone wrenches all turned backwards instead of frontwards. And if you're making clones of the best wrench, surely it'd be preferable if those clone-clone wrenches were only useful as hammers.

Yeah, they sound like absolute douchebags. That being said, if you deal with criminals then don't be surprised when things go south in unexpected ways. It doesn't matter if you're buying drugs, weapons or videogames, keep your guard up and be aware of the potential risks before going in.

Hey! Loved the video. Just wanted to point out, though, that the old Sky3DS carts have the blue button (one button used for scrolling through a small number of games) while new Sky3DS+ carts have an orange rocker--two buttons with one plastic piece that can be used to scroll forwards AND backwards through an enormous list. You accidentally mixed up that one part.
