That dynamic tension control system is a fantastic design idea! Wow! UGQ is now on my radar for my next quilt! Thanks, Devin!
@matthewpulliam747310 ай бұрын
UGQ are LEGIT. I have four of their quilts, and you really get what you pay for. Note that their temp ratings are *comfort* ratings, so a 20degF quilt is really warm at 20 and realistically usable down to 0degF. Customer service is excellent as well.
@BackcountryExposure10 ай бұрын
Outside of the Zenbivy system, which is quite different, the Dynamic Tension is the best I've been able to find to reduce drafts effectively.
@BackcountryExposure10 ай бұрын
It's true! The quilt on the table in the video is the new quilt I ordered and it's 20º rated, but I had 2oz of overstuff put into it. While out there the temps were in the low 20's and high humidity and I slept incredibly warm!

The dynamic tensioning system was invented by Mid-Atlantic Mountain Works no later than 2017, when I brought my quilt from them. This is a great feature, even better when licensed.

Been a customer of theirs for about a dozen years now. Have bought about a dozen quilts from them as well. 7 top quilts and 5 underquilts. Love the company, know the owners. They've grown a lot in the time I've known them and it's always great to see a video from their shop. Thanks Devon!

Great content! Absolutely love my UGQ Bandit. Custom purple outside/yellow inside 10-degree. Building it on the website was half the fun - so easy to customize and see how each option changes overall weight and price. They sent updates every step of the way as it was being handmade, which was super cool. And they’re made here in my home state of Michigan. ❤. Top-notch, highly recommended!

Yesterday, I ordered a 10*F Bandit (I tend to be a cold sleeper), no taper, drawstring footbox version with the tensioning system. I also ordered a new Kilos Gear AeroCloud Elite sleeping R-5.0 sleeping pad to pair with it. Now I may order a Sea to Summit liner to go with it, mostly for summer nights when it's too warm for a quilt or bag. A really great video!

Always interesting to see different designer’s preferences. UGQ, Enlightened Equipment and Nunatak embrace this hybrid baffle direction approach. Katabatic still favors horizontal baffles so that you can optimize the down on the top or sides depending on conditions. Katabatic and Nunatak address air gaps and drafts with differential cuts and similar edge tensioners/catenary cuts. Super cool stuff.

I really like the UGQ Bandit - The quality, features and service. Getting an extra wide 60" quilt and the side elastics tensioning system is well worth the extra weight (if ground camping). I recently ordered an underquilt for my hammock and am hoping for the same quality and ease of use.

I love my UGQ 20F and 40F quilt because of the various options. I'm linebacker sized and toss and turn. So that meant that the non-taper, x-wide, tensioning, and overfill options were great. I'm tempted to get a 0F from them, too. Edit: UGQ please make a 2 quilt attachment strap like that double-vowel company. I have a DIY system, but that leaves 2 extra clip ends on each strap even in the summer.

I agree! For my new quilt, I went with a wide/long and wish I had done that size all along and never bothered with a regular size. :)

I received my UGQ Bandit Top Quilt about a month ago and I'm very happy with it. I literally visually inspected every seam and baffle and it's quality built. I chose a UGQ over Enlightened Equipment quilt because UGQ offered three features that EE doesn't: draft collar on footbox (I chose zipper & draw cord style), dynamic tension control, and no taper style. As for eliminating drafts, I already learned how to turn on a dime, or said another way, turning like a door on a hinge, in my Western Mountaineering UltraLite Mummy Bag. However, I really dislike the restriction of a mummy bag, that's the main reason I switched to a quilt. But you can learn how to turn over inside of a quilt to prevent drafts. And if you do experience a draft it's pretty easy to make a quick adjustment. My only regret is, I wish I would have picked a different outer color. I got the Blaze Orange, because I went through a phase where I just liked orange. However, it's very bright, and I think I'd rather wake up in the morning to a soothing Moroccan Blue. Nevertheless I'm very happy with my quilt.😊
@BackcountryExposure10 ай бұрын
That's rad! Stoked it's worked out so well. Yes, that orange is bright!!

I'd never bother spending $ on a quilt from anywhere else. If you can't get it from UGQ, then you don't need it.
@michelstronguin697410 ай бұрын
What I never understood was why they don't close off small squares filled with down instead of having long sleeves. The down can't shift anywhere if its closed off in a small square, but everytime I take of one these quilts backpacking, there are areas where the down isn't in, and i have to play with it forever to get it to be even. There is a massive money making opportunity for the first company that would go the extra mile and make small closed off squares. Like a high class down jacket. I would easily pay an extra $200 to have this feature. Making the total cost of the quilt for me be $500 to $600.
@abl551610 ай бұрын
It takes 3-5 seconds for me to move the down around...? Bring your mom, she'll take care of you.... sorry couldnt stop myself...lol
@BackcountryExposure10 ай бұрын
Couple of thoughts. If you do the squares, you're going to have a massive amount of baffles to fill, so squares like that are usually reserved for sewn through construction, which means a quilt that isn't as warm. Boxed baffles in a square pattern are doable, but it'd be a massive amount of work. What I recommend for those dead spots is to get your bag/quilt out of the stuff bag and give it s good shake to get the down to unclump. Then lay it down and with your hands just pound the baffles back and forth the get the clumps out and help it loft. That introduces air into the baffles and you'll have better distribution of the down.

Check out the NovaPro jacket from Outdoor Vitals; they’re doing what I think you’re suggesting, but without all the extra needle holes. If that same tech was available for quilts, it would be a game changer.
