I’m starting a no buy/low buy year. I spend money on everything I want. This has to stop. One idea I heard was to highlight the days on the calendar when no money was spent outside of your necessities. You will want to keep the trend going each day. If you miss a day by spending, that day does not get a highlight and you start again the next day. Now you can track how many days you were successful! Much better than quitting all together.

I love secondhand shopping! But this year I intend to only spend money I get back from consignment stores on new things. This will drastically reduce the amount of money I'll be spending, and incentivize me to get rid of things/take care of my things to increase my thrift store budget.

Unless you own a lot of "stuff" at the onset, i highly recommend a low spend yesr over a no spend year. As mentioned, we generally buy things as a function of life as opposed to making most of the things we consume. If frugality and only purposeful spending are the goals, one is likely to discover that "investment purchases" would enable less purshasing over all. What immediately comes to mind are sustainables and reusable items to take the place of disposables. Maybe food storage containers or double walled, thermal and beverage and food containers to make taking your own food rather than buying out more possible.

I agree. I replaced my plastic leg hair shaver with a shaver made of metal and the razors can be changed. I also don't buy clothes that contain plastic fibers like polyester or acrylic. I am so happy with the purchases I made over the last years regarding better, high quality clothes. This goes for shoes, too. I started buying real leather shoes again and there IS a difference in the appearing. This is also true for handbags. No more fake leather. The plastic it is made of is more harmful to human health and animals as well as for the environment than wearing real leather things that will last you for years and years and can easily be repaired. I highly recommend the book "Essentialism" by McKeown. It's not about buying less, it's about buying only what you need and things things that improve your physical and mental health (gym membership is very important to me, for example). As for the rest, I only start shopping at the beginning of October every year bc you can get huge discounts on items you were looking for for a long time. I'm not willing to pay full price, so I try to get the best discounts possible, especially during black week. Before October, I hardly buy any make-up, clothes, interior stuff or other "decoration" purpose items.

Low spend is Moore realistic. Would feel way deprived with no spend

Yes..I have observed some minimalists go the way of no spend challenges only to have ultimately a high spend month at some point during the year. I think it is good to be conscious of the purchases. However, replacing broken headphones if you use headphones daily or deciding to replace a sweater that's beyond repair bc you only own 15 items of clothing and it is Winter, this is just part of being a human that things may be 'unnecessary' you could make due without the headphones or just wear a ratty, beyond repair holey sweater yet this is moreso deprivation that I personally don't think is healthy or for the sake of saying one completed a no spend challenges only to have to go out to buy those items anyway. Another thought is going to the eye doctor and learning you really need glasses to safely drive. One wouldn't want to put that off for the sake of a no spend year/month. It is good to be practical about it and a budget should have a line item for replacement of wardrobe/shoe essentials and other items that are non food/consumable related while going no spend. I have just seen too many KZbinrs take that too far and not be honest when one knows at some point something is going to come up. So, it's good for viewers that are new to minimalism or budgeting (whatever their interest in no spend stems from) to understand that.

Yes ... there is no spend out of necessity vs a challenge or experiment. January 2024 was to be a no spend month as muchnoit of a challenge, use up what you own, and to add to our 2024 Bigger Ticket Item fund. On the 6th of January we went log splitter drooling, one of our planned 2024 Bigger Ticket Items, and the truck acted a little funny pulling out of the last parking lot, We did make it home though the lights were getting pretty dim. By the 8th of January we had a new, unplanned alternator with internal voltage regular put in by a mobile service and a couple of additional parts of which only one was a planned 2024 Bigger Ticket Item on the list. We did have our fund to cover it but, we blew past our no-spend January challenge. - I much prefer single day no-spend challenges with a kiss of cash in case you need gas to get home. Also purposefully thought of, planned purchases for both frugality and minimalism purposes. This said I am not a good minimalist but can be good at being frugal.

Love the intro haha!! Me and my partner are trying to see how long we can go without buying anything, our rules: 1. Only spend on food and consumables. 2. We can spend reasonably on our trip on holiday. 3. We can splurge once every quarter but only on reasonable items (buy it for life, sustainable etc). We're going to be each other cheerleaders. Our goal is to be able to turbocharge our savings before putting it down for a house! Totally agree with money tracking, I think the biggest tip I got was to immediately put money away and give yourself a strict budget by analysing everything you've spent. Also, small tip that's super useful. Use Ublock Origin on your computer, and block as many ads as you can everywhere.

Hi, new folower late 40s empty nester. I was a minimalist before it became a term 😊 We just kinda all lumped in as people who were 'simple living' and often congregated on old AOL and YAHOO chatrooms among homesteaders. I have been pretty much low buy most of my adult life and did try to buy second hand though, some things are my line in the sand with that. One thing that always helped me was to maintain a list in my annual journal planner of what I bought. I don't stress about it. However, it is interesting to fo back and look at amd see hey, are those things I ever ended up using? Finally, as I get older, do continually still purge. I guess there is this term ultra oe extreme minimalist which is not right fkr me. I had years in the real estate industry and love my small collection of home decor photo frames of adult children who live in different states one overseas and other family plus family trinkets passed down. I also love to cook and have a two person china set plus some dessert dish sets and a few crystal glasses. It is interesting to see how younger generations embrace living simply or anti consumerism culture (somewhere in it is a cross section of that or living lightly for other personal or spiritual/religious reasons). The most recent thing that I have decluttered that for mamy years never thought I would was my DVD player and last of my DVD collection. I had the full series of Seinfeld, which for my age bracket was something I watched as a teen and still do. I resolved that I can follow Seinfeld on KZbin and Instagram for episodes or episode snippets. I also have a small quiz card game and a local place hosts Seinfeld Trivia a few times a year. It was the only reason why I kept that DVD player. 😂

I want to grow my hair long so if I can get one year without haircut, even better, but if I get breakage or start getting split ends, I will rescue my hair with a haircut.

That's great! Maybe to replace the clothes and toys, you can take your granddaughter to some outdoors activities instead. It doesn't even have to be anything big or expensive. When I was a kid, my favourite days were spent at the playground, on a garden playing in the dirt, cooking with my grandmother or riding a bike. :)
