I can hardly tell accents apart... like I do hear in the video that he's talking slightly differently when he speaks as himself than as General Hux for example, but I couldn't tell what he pronounces differently. It's probably because I'm not native English-speaker so I'm not so good at hearing little differences in the pronouncication, I only can tell when something is pronounced significantly different way from how I was taught. And I've picked up words and pronouncication from the classroom, from the internet, from movies and tv shows, so my talk is probably an odd mix of American and British English covered with a heavy foreign (Finnish) accent, I don't know. Still interesting hearing about this stuff though!
@hlly93706 жыл бұрын
Elsa Laiho same with me. I can hear the "heavy" accents and telm them apart, but it makes me sad, that I don't really hear what they worked on in for example "the little stranger"
@GlytcheD6 жыл бұрын
Dont worry about it, it's normal for non native speakers to not be able to tell between accents of that language. Plus, English can be so varied.
@sarahfitzgerald8016 жыл бұрын
Your English is so good oh my god
@elsalaiho16996 жыл бұрын
@@sarahfitzgerald801 Well, yeah, when I write I can usually pass as a native English-speaker (I read and watch a lot of stuff in English, I write a lot too, plus I have studied English for maybe half my life now and still continue to study it, so that probably explains), but when I speak... well, the other person usually understands me, but I really wouldn't pass as a native with my Finnish accent.
@2junwoo6 жыл бұрын
@@elsalaiho1699 if you are interested, is more about training your ears really - and starts with understanding how and why you sound the way you sound, how your mouth opens, how your tongue moves, etc. It takes a while, but it is just training. I'm majoring in English teaching, but I'm a non-native speaker as well, so it was hell going through phonetic classes. Eventually, as you become more aware of your own voice and accent, you start being able to pick more differences and educating your ear to hear things you don't really pay attention to unless you are doing it so on purpose.

Learning different accents ruined my life. I was born in China; I lived in Germany when I was little; I went to high school and college in America; I had friends from England, Scotland, and Australia; my neighborhood are mostly Mexican now... I could a pretty good impression of their accents, but when I normally talk, I sound super weird. I gained a mixture of several different accents. It is really hard for me to fix my accent because English is not my native language, so technally, I didn't have a original standard accent.

As a South African, I can genuinely say that we do have a very complicated accent. It all depends on the area, however. You’ve got the thick Afrikaans accent, the Cape Flats slang, the British/Afrikaans accent where it sounds like you were born and raised in the UK and came to South Africa, never lost the accent but have never actually been there in your life. It’s quite a complicated accent.
