There's 2 theatres in my area. One is the locally owned, more popular and preferred one. The other is AMC Classic 8, formerly Carmike. AMC isn't doing remodeling either. They just lowered the tickets to $5.99 every day and cut their showtimes to one 7pm on weeknights. The seats are still uncomfortable and non-stadium. Meanwhile the other theatre is slowly upgrading to better seats (even some recliners for smaller theatres) and it only takes them a couple of weeks to do that.
@TheLizcass5 жыл бұрын
It may not seem like AMC has spent a lot of money upgrading the Carmikes they bought out, but believe me they have. I work at The AMC Classic Crawfordsville 8 and they spent a lot of money on getting the Freestyles installed, painting the building and most importently getting all "life and safety" aspects of the theatre up to code. @@aaronlimitless when Wanda Group bought out AMC they decided to sell off the Canadian locations. Not because they were not profitable, but because they wanted to focus on the US market. AMC came to Canada in the early 2000's I believe (perhaps the late 1990's - not entirely sure) so they were never a big player in the Canadian market. In 2012 they sold 4 locations to Cineplex (biggest theatre chain in Canada), 2 to Empire (owned by the grocery store chain Sobey's, and they later sold their theatres off to Cineplex and Landmark), and 2 were closed. So it wasn't an issue of Canada not being able to run a company. We are a smaller market and given AMC was not expanding here it just made financial sense. I've been going to the Whitby location since it opened and Empire said it was their most profitable location when they acquired it. It was original an AMC 24, so it was double the size of the closest Cineplex. Landmark took it over and they upgraded 23 of the theatres to reclining seats, the lone IMAX theatre now has better rocker seats (I haven't been to an IMAX movie since the change as I prefer the recliners). They also brought in Coke Freestyle machines. Kind of a rarity really in these parts. I will say their concession offerings suck. Hot dogs, soft pretzels, pretzel bites and a pretzel wrapped dog are the hot items outside of popcorn. They are currently in the process of renovating the interior or at least the main lobby area. Going to feel strange when that is done. Most amusing thing dating back to when it was the AMC 24 was the carpet between guest services and the concession stands actually had a giant swastika. It stayed like that for years. My biggest complaint dating back to the AMC days was they were so damn slow to refill the flavour powder machine. Eventually they just chained plastic shakes to the garbage cans, but those were go empty quickly. Empire and Landmark charge for tiny packets of flavouring, so I always just brought my own from the store.

AMC movie pass subscription allowed me to see End Game in 3D Imax ($25 ticket) and use free $5 vouchers (based on a point system). I think it's fair to say millions of movie tickets and millions of popcorn orders and millions of sodas were sold because they were pretty much free for the $20 monthly AMC movie pass. The pass now costs $23.99 in California but a regular AMC here costs about $14.95 for a standard ticket. I think I "spent" $450 at AMC but I have only bought $60 worth of monthly passes.

I discovered certain AMCs had full recliners ( almost flat ) that were made with good cushioning. Top that off that I could reserve our seats. I quit waiting for an interesting movie to arrive on DVD. I semi- regularly picked up gift cards at Sam's /Costco and bought $50 worth of AMC credit for $40. If the movie is boring, you take a cat nap. Brilliant business decision to lure folks out of their homes. I dont see movies unless I get a full recliner. Love this channel. Peace.

Bert Paredes was a senior sight and sound engineer for over 35 years. He was also an ambassador that would pick out hot locations. He would also over see the construction of new buildings and renovations. He has worked with many high profile Hollywood executives and actors. I’ll list just one of Will Smith and they will always go back when they need to do any premiere or events. He essentially was the man behind the silver screen making the sight and sound perfect. With Netflix and streaming services, and new movie releases time to digital, more people might be willing to wait till they're available for digital purchase. The introduction of reserve seating and incline chairs was crazy for me. I viewed the theater experience as a hassle when I was younger. Having to get there early, long lines, saving seats, and competing with people getting 'free' seats. Then ending up with the neck breaking seats at the front. As i got older I noticed a big decline in move goers even after AMC converted our Lowes. I thought, they're just going to go out of business with this audience. Using the enhanced seating arrangements was a great move to combat this. Instead of stuffing the screens to max capacity make it a quality experience instead, especially since the seats weren't filled anyway. The Alist membership made me go from a 1-3 movies a year to a 2-3 movies a month person. I'm a sucker for movie flavored popcorn. It's still expensive with the free upgrade, but nothing compares to that flavor and butter. I always sneak in my water bottle though lol. In the end they are getting more money from me, but I am having a much better experience now.

Most of the reasoning you listed for their more recent success makes a lot of sense. I used to go to a lot of the Cinemark theaters when I was younger due to there being no real difference between the two except for distance from me. Now I exclusively watch every movie at AMC theaters, I'm a part of their A-list, which honestly pays for itself even if you don't see 3 movies every week. Their Dolby theaters are also the bomb, I will never get over that sound quality.

I liked it a lot because it was a classy place(like employees wearing tux suits and the whole place looking like it belongs in the 20s) and because the theaters themselves were always nice and clean. Regal bought them out and ever since then the place has been going to shit, the theaters aren't nearly as clean as they used to be, they got rid of the tuxes for shitty looking fast food type uniforms, and they started playing TV ads before the movie starts as if you're $11 dollars wasn't enough for their pockets. Fuck Regal, I wish AMC built a theater as close to my house as the Warren so it wouldn't feel like I'm forced to go give Regal my money just to see a movie.

The screens are a nice size, the seat layouts are good. I LOVE the selection of food. Some locations have restaurants inside the building but not inside the theaters themselves, while others have restaurants inside the actual theaters. They call those Dine-in theaters. I was a part of the original AMC stubs rewards program (before they made it 3 tiers) and it was great. I would get $10 back whenever I spend $100. Well, if I went to a movie with 3 other friends we would rack up $100 in purchases easily.

One thing that's ignored is how effective they are at utilizing their larger number of screens compared to many competitors. Growing up near their headquarters it wasn't uncommon for their local 20 screen suburban theater to screen a lot of smaller, independent, and foreign films that would normally require a trip downtown to the art theater. Nothing too obscure, mainly larger limited releases. Now living in an area with a very large Chinese population it's not uncommon to see major Chinese films showing at AMC. Especially things like big releases around the Lunar New Year. They also tend to show a good number of Indian-produced films to capture that audience. Other local theaters might do special events through Fathom Events, but AMC schedules this on their own. It won't ever form a backbone of their offerings, but they're taking greater advantage of their smaller theaters to increase the variety of what they show and keep audiences that would otherwise go to specialty theaters.
@skribble-4 жыл бұрын
if youre a customer the experience is pretty amazing due to the picture, sound and seat quality as well as how clean the theaters tend to be. However as someone who worked there, if youre apart of the staff, its hell keeping things that nice. They under staff and then overwork the very limited staff. Next time you go see a movie, please be thoughtful and dont leave your trash on the floor or in your seat, it helps the staff more than you know
