really so the liberals give these folks 24 months of free rent. the landlord goes to his bank they say nothing doing you have to pay the us our money. so he goes to the bank borrows more money pays his other bank thier money and his properties sit. he still has to make repairs take calls from angry tenants and for what for nothing that's what. my buddy manages 260 units not in cali in the rust belt he evicted 80 % of his managed tenants they did not want to ever pay rent. they spent that money they did not put it in a bank save it maybe make a down payment on a house no no they spent that money. america is a nation of deadbeats their last president before this one was their deadbeat in chief. now they want to default on their national debt again.

This is happening all over. We live in northern Idaho. We moved into our current apartment in 2019 at 790/month. At the start of the pandemic they raised our rent to 970. In 2022 it went to 1290 and now, to renew our lease in 2023, they want well over 1400. About a 100% increase in just 4 years. We are getting out of Idaho. We found an apartment in Spokane in a better area, with better amenities for $200 less than the 1290 we have been paying. We couldn't find anything near the place we are vacating for less than 1400 for a 2 bed 1 ba. WTH Republicans, thought red states were cheaper and that is why the min wage doesn't need to be raised over the fed min of 7.25? We don't mind getting out of Idaho, though, especially since they seem to be following the gop "make America fascist" playbook.

This is a really bad situation and I honestly don’t see how it ends well. Most people I know trying to get out of the renting game are being priced out of anything they want to buy, as their rents escalate. People are considering moving to cities and states they never would have considered, and it’s a big gamble because where the rents and house prices are “cheaper,” the job markets tend to be bad. This feels like an unprecedented upheaval. And we can talk about it forever but no one can or will really do anything about it.

Checking the real-estate sites daily until you know the offerings by heart. It will be time consuming at first, but the payoff will be, as soon as you see the flow of the markets, you'll be able to pull back on the time you take spend searching the listings. No longer will it be necessary to scour the listings daily, every few days now, then once a week or so. Enough to keep in the loop. That way when you are ready to buy you have a pretty good handle on the available offerings. Realtor have a good handle on things, but they have their own interests and preferences that sometimes doesn't work towards your advantage. That way you'll be ready for when that big deal happens.

For the apartments, there needs to be government mandated rent ceilings. Charging more than a certain amount needs to be considered a crime in which conviction means the company has to sell the property. The ceilings and rent control laws need to include fees, so that adding fees counts as raising rent. There's more they can do than I can think of as a lay person. They just don't want to do it. The more amenities you tack on, the more it has to cost. A more reasonable perspective isn't to get rid of these high priced units, but to force them to compete with state-run commie blocks that provide affordable, good enough housing at a low price.

My condo increased 50% in 2021. There was no way in hell I was paying that, but the average costs skyrocketed everywhere else so it didn't really matter. However, I refused to cover the rent at my condo when I lived there for 3 years. I never had a late payment & often paid several months in advance. This country is garbage.

The New Feudalism. Few powerful land owners, own all land, and everyone else must be a tenant serf, and labor all day to pay the feudal land lord. It's a problem in many countries now, though some are looking at nationalizing the residences (and reselling them to people at an affordable price) and prohibiting corporate ownership (large firm) of residential property. The best part for them is it is self-reinforcing, they buy up all the homes with no negotiation or fees, paying cash at or above asking price. This drives up property costs significantly and reduces the number of homes available to buy. As prices rise, people can't buy so they rent, feeding the coffers of the company, to buy more houses at inflated prices, driving up prices. Eventually since they have plenty of money, they can simply afford to buy up everything that comes on the market regardless of price, while making home ownership more and more prohibitively expensive. And then the fed which doesn't seem to understand how economics actually works, as they are just corporatist ideologues who bought Friedman's snake oil and think that making mortgages have interest rates to rival a credit card is going to help people stabilize the economy. Leading to further make serfs of even more people, because those who might have had a chance to buy are now unable to because the loan will be too expensive. A loan, BTW which is only necessary because banks created consumer mortgages (they used to be mostly for rich people and corporations), which, when introduced to a market quickly drives up the cost of buying a home, and causes a spike in real estate prices. A spike just big enough to make getting a mortgage, more and more necessary to bridge the price gap to buy a house, versus what it had been historically when people literally saved up for a number of years, got money from family and friends, maybe a small personal loan, and bought the house in cash. Since prices are "what the market will bare", this meant that the relative prices of homes had to be set at a price that was reasonable for a person or couple to buy, outright in cash (relative to the location and socio-economic position of the area, of course, there were rich, poor and middle-class homes, but within each strata, prices were limited to realistic cash prices). With the advent of spending the bank's money and only paying it off over 20 or 30 years, sellers feel they can get more, so prices go up. Then less and less people can reasonably save-up and buy in cash, and more and more people need a mortgage to bridge the gap. And they're convinced (usually by the bank) that it's better to not just borrow the small amount you need to buy, in cash but to put 10 or 20% down and pay it off over 30 years... And this way you can even spend a little more, on something nicer (and then try for that myth of using the rest of the capital to make more money over the 30 years, which never happens because real estate usually out performs other investments over time and the more equity you have and less interest/debt you pay the more you earn.) This raises prices again, and within 10 years or so, no one (save the very wealthy) can buy a house without securing a mortgage, paying interest, fees, assessments and contract terms (which grow and expand, since you now have to get a mortgage to buy a home). All of which go to the bank. In fact, only the first people to sell in this market make real money, as once mortgages become necessary to buy in a market, the additional gains later sellers would make from the increased price, is absorbed by the costs, fees and interest of the mortgage they need to buy their next home, so basically the bank absorbs that extra money they made from the increased home price. And the money they make on the sale becomes the down payment on their next loan. Basically the banks insert themselves as unnecessary middle-men, alter the market to make themselves indispensable, and then soak up all the money. But then the Fed raises interest rates, but now you have a market where no one can buy a home without a mortgage, but the cost of the mortgage is so high you can't afford one, so people keep renting and giving their potential wealth and generational wealth to the feudal land lord and the banks.

Why would I pay exorbitant rent AND pay for yard work I am perfectly happy doing myself? Why not include the fee IN the rent? Trying to make it look less expensive to get more traffic? Gross. We're priced out due to price and mortgage rates. Wonder why Millenials and Gen Z are doom spending? Not getting married? Not starting families? Why is civil unrest growing while the wealth gap is larger than it ever has been in history? It's because this economy is not for us, it never has been. It priced us out and left us behind before we got here. companies today do $13 billion dollar buybacks instead of paying workers more, pensions for retirement don't exist, wages are sideways the past 50 years except for executives. This doesn't end well for society at every socioeconomic level..

I'm a single property landlord in the UK - the rent charged is around 20% lower than market rate. The property is well maintained and all appliances, including the electrical system need annual checks. I'm now having to introduce annual rent increases, but am keeping it below £50 / month/ year as I have a great tenant. Whilst they earn above the national average wage I've had several horrendous tenants, so happy to take a revenue dip for now and then start to move things up as I approach my retirement. Also our government has removed all tax breaks for private landlords, unless you covert to a business, so keen not to raise my income more than I need for now.

That same apartment today, in the same shape(worse, actually), is renting for $3150 monthly. Here's the fun part: My dad rented the same apartment when it was BRAND NEW in 1977....he paid $85 per month for rent. From $85 per month to $3150 for a now 50 year old building. One question: Did our wages go up 37 times(the rent is 37x more) since 1977? Not for 99% of us.
