I use to not like american dad so much, i'd watch a lot of the shows growing up like archer, cleveland show, family guy, the ones that always came out the same day, but i dont know like 10 years ago, family guys ideas and how the show felt was declining for me, and american dad was okay for the first few seasons, i believe when season 5 came around, it started getting wacky and it seperated itself from how family guy carried their humor and it became it's own thing not just a family guy copy, it had interest plot and you could see the characters grow in personality as the seasons go on, the family seemed as dysfunctional as family the first few seasons, but now it's grown into an inseparable family opposite of family guy, even Jeff who was suppose to be a side character and someone who Stan extremely disliked, Jeff is now apart of the family, he's loved and he's involved with their wacky adventures, it doesn't feel like he's left out at all, the whole family feels involved in the plot, unlike family guy who only focuses on a pair usually and everyone else might have a cameo but not for long. American dad to me atleast has had many enjoyable episodes in each season, while family guy can have a few good episode a season, american dad has way better humor, it has great delivery, the characters are just outright better, and the episode plot which is most important exceeds over family guys, family guy follows some sort of standard in what they would allow in the episode, but american dad aren't afraid to be different, they aren't to afraid to present unusual plots, some of the stuff you question if it's even possible in the american dad universe

I always preferred American dad over Family guy. Family guy is just too random. I know that's the joke, but I don't find it interesting. I mean, at one point Peter Griffin becomes a godfather to his friend's baby, the next he is fighting mobsters and gets saved by a can of sauce!? In American dad there is a thing called "continuity". It was revealed in one episode that Stan Smith has a brother and they keep mentioning him in other episodes. How many "twin siblings" does Peter have at this point? Moreover, in American dad they give a reason to all the weirdness; The fish can talk because they replaced its brain with that of a skier. It is still weird, but I find it better than "Animals talk, it's totally normal" or "The family can understand the baby only when plots needs it". Also, the Smiths, despite all the weirdness, are still a loving family with a few hints of relatability. Peter Griffin is a childish idiot who makes fun of and even beats his own kids (mostly his daughter who I think is one of the few sympathetic characters). I think the Griffins haven't killed themselves yet because the Network wants the show to continue to make money off the few people who still watch it. I cannot mention that American dad has an overarching plot that keeps you interested and anxious for more: The Golden Turd. Family Guy has its Chicken fights. They might be enjoyable, but I feel like they are just filler.

The reason why I like American Dad so much more than Family Guy is because it’s consistently funny, the main characters are treated as characters, the jokes work for the episode not making an episode to make the jokes work, next to no cutaway gags and the episodes having an actual story to it. Literally any pair in American Dad will be funnier than any pair in Family Guy, even Stewie and Brian.

Cleveland Show did not run long enough to have the quality dips long running shows have after a change in writers. The main Family Guy crew and Seth wrote Family Guy until 2009. Then they left and new writers took over. Cleveland Show ended way before that occured. So its unfair using a show in its prime to episodes of a long running series. Compare prime vs prime

FG is slowly limping to a end. After season 25, Fox needs to drop Family Guy. 2026. FG started 1999 but had a 2-3yr gap 2000s. American Dad as a series has 20+ seasons. Went to TBS in the 2010s.
