How an Angry Coach created the Rally Towel...

One of the best parts of Hockey is the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The arenas are electric and boast quite the atmosphere. And an important part of that environment is the Rally Towel. But how it got popularized throughout the NHL is sorta a weird story, and it starts with one man, Former Canucks Coach, Roger Neilson.

This is even funnier, when you know that Roger Nielsen is in the hockey hall of fame, not for his coaching acumen, but as an “architect of the game” for exploiting a ton of loopholes and creating like 4-5 funny rules. The KZbin channel Secret Base did a nice 10 or so minute video on him a few years back if you want to learn more specifics.

Most players and coaches in the Hall of Fame have a memorial somewhere in the Hall. Nielsen has two: his plaque, and the NHL rulebook....

I have been surrounded by the Canucks my whole life, but never was into hockey, just dabbled a game or two a year. I was familiar with the towel tradition, but I had no idea Vancouver was the origin story. Really cool!

It's a really cool fact but it was only the first hockey team to do it. The Pittsburgh Steelers were technically the first as they started that in 1975.

Rally towels were clearly adopted by teams after the Steelers introduced the terrible towel. Roger Neilsen or w.e was 7 years after the terrible towel
