I was 8yo when this happened and remember it all on the news. Now as an adult I worked out of the Sears Tower and last year after covid lock downs happened, construction broke a water main in the building and there was 30ft of water in the basement.

Plugging a hole in a river bed isn't as easy as putting your finger in it lol thanks for letting me know, that will come in handy next time 💯

I was on the East Bank sun deck after work hearing and watching the pounding of the new pylons being installed weeks before the tunnel breach. It was loud and noisy and East Bank Club building vibrations were noticeable!

I saw the whole thing from my office window at Citcorp Centre know as the Northwestern Atrium Building at the time. You just saw a churning hole by the bridge pilings.

Does appear some one in the piling project would have had sense enough to check the location of the tunnels vs the pilings or other construction. Secondly, why didn't they use floating pilings anchored to the river bank to protect the bridge from boats/barges?

I remember hearing about this on WBBM 780 one evening down here in Louisiana. It intrigued me.

This is the excerpt of that news account: " "A cable television crew working in the tunnel in January 1992 noticed the cracked wall, and notified the city, but it took months before the city got bids for repairs. By April 13, 1992, the crack had turned into a car-sized hole, sending river water pouring into the tunnels."

Some of the downtown buildings have sub basements. If I remember correctly Kenny Construction was quite instrumental in the repairs.

The mayor said the city worked with Kenny on a hand shake, and Kenny came through. There was no time for paperwork.
