How an M3 Grease Gun works

The M3 was an American .45-caliber submachine gun adopted for U.S. Army service on 12 December 1942, as the United States Submachine Gun, Cal. .45, M3. The M3 was chambered for the same .45 round fired by the Thompson submachine gun, but was cheaper to produce, and lighter, although, contrary to popular belief, it was far less accurate. This myth stems from a US army training film portraying the M3 as more accurate than its counterparts. The M3 was commonly referred to as the "Grease Gun" or simply "the Greaser," owing to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool.
Intended as a replacement for the .45-caliber Thompson series of submachine guns, the M3 began to replace the Thompson in first-line service in mid-1944. Due to delays caused by production issues and approved specification changes, the M3 saw limited combat use in World War II and the M3A1 none. The M3A1 was used in the Korean War and later conflicts.

As late as 1991 we had these in our Army National Guard Infantry unit, the drivers and mechanics carried them. Got the chance to shoot one at the range, very fun to fire. Later on during a combat deployment to Afghanistan, got my hands on a Sten Mk5. Between the two, my choice would have to be the M3, love the .45 ACP round, and more compact. The guy who founded the company I work for carried one of these in WW2 and hated it. I had a chance to shoot one of these, a STEN and a Tommy Gun. M3 and STEN are good if shooter and shooter are inside a phone booth together. The Thompson was more useful at distances over 3 feet.

Does the M3A1 Grease Gun has the same mechanics but just doesn’t have the charging handle? All I know it a big was a problem to the soldiers cause dirt and mud would get into the chamber and it gets jammed

The M3A1 simplified a couple of things in the process of manufacturing, most of them are unnoticeable but the lack of charging handle is the one that sticks the most when people look at the M3A1. The charging handle was exchanged by a thumb hole that you would stick your finger in and then pull back, though it may sound unconventional and complex to the user the thumb hole did not produce any damage to the weapon at all but rather increased its efficiency as the mechanism was made way simpler. At the moment of shooting the firearm, it was obvious to just stick your finger and pull the bolt back and one would easily get used to the small change.

I always wondered, why not make a straight blowback .308 or 7.62x51. I've always wondered if you could tune the spring tension and bolt weight perfectly to where it would act like a locked breech, but fire from an open bolt and just be all around simpler and cheaper to produce. Like compere the time it takes for a locked breech 7.62x51 just say the M60 to unlock and tune that to the force of the recoil overcoming a combination of inertia of the wight of the bolt and the spring tension to simulate a locked breech and produce the same effect.

I can't remember what it was called, but I do remember reading about a pistol that was designed for elderly or just generally people who don't have a lot of hand strength. It was an auto-loader chambered in a normal pistol round 9x19 or something close to that, but the interesting thing about it was that it had a feature where the slide could be disconnected from the recoil spring for charging. Essentially you were just racking a pistol with no recoil spring and when a round is chambered, the slide would snap back over the recoil spring and be ready to operate like a semi-auto pistol. I can't remember it was just straight-blowback or if it had a locked breech. It did get me thinking though that you could conceivably have a weapon with a monster of a recoil spring and be able to easily rack it with that type of recoil spring disconnector.

I just tripped over my own words, something like that wouldn't be functional as an open-bolt. It would have to be closed bolt, but I believe it would be possible to be straight-blowback and eliminate the need for a gas system or rotating bolt. What do you think?

Fred Fredderson well you might be able to do it but it wouldn't be practical at all. The bolt weight would have to be pretty large as well as spring tension. That results in some pretty hefty recoil. You'll also probably need to design a thicker case to reduce the possibility of case tearings and blowouts. If straight blowback rifles were a idea that worked well then we would have seen it sometime (especially in ww1 and 2) in the 100 years that semi auto rifles have been around. I think that you'd be better off using delay rollers or rotating bolt

when the US had an impractically slow and big bullet for use in a sub machine gun, the 9mm isn't the best bullet, but it's better for sub machine gun use (needs less mass in the bolt) has higher velocity, less drop over range, less leading needed for moving targets

yes, the recoil of the bullet pushes is back, the mass of the bolt keeps it closed long enough for most of the propellant gas to push the bullet out. it's a straight blowback gun as apposed to a delayed blowback gun ( like a reising sub machine gun).

CANT THINK OF A NAME !!! This is a simple blowback principle. The bolt isn't locked in place. Pulling the trigger causes the firing pin to move forward and ignite the primer on the round, sending bullet down the barrel and out the gun. The resulting recoil causes the bolt to be pushed back, opening the breech. The spring at the bottom of the magazine pushes the next round into the chamber while pushing the spent cartridge out of the breech. The recoil spring behind the bolt pushes it forward pushing the new round into the firing chamber, closing the breech. If the trigger is still held down, the firing pin will still be extended, automatically striking the primer of the new cartridge and repeating process until the trigger is released or until the last round is fired. By depressing the trigger and immediately releasing it, can result in single shots. The safety is by closing the breech cover, which inserts a tab into the bolt, thereby preventing it from moving.

An Ignited bullet cartrige creates gases to operate a bolt firing pin with a spring mechanism is your answer. a small hook attached to the bolt pulls out a new cartrige as the exploding gases inside the barell creates enough energy at the same time expelling the previous cartridge. The magazine carries a spring under pressure that feed the bullet into the chamber this creates a continuous rate of fire all semi and fully autos look different but they almost all operate with the same principle just different models with different caliber

It is called an Open Bolt. The M3 and M3A1 submachine guns are open bolt full automatic firearms. Open bolt means that the bolt is released with the trigger and it slides through the magazine grabbing a bullet and once the bullets arrive at the barrel it immediately ignites by a fixed pin on the bolt. The AK and the AR15 platforms are an example of a closed bolt firearm in which the bolt loads a bullet in the chamber and then the trigger only releases a pin that ignites a cartridge.

Can they make any guns that done use the primitive gun powder they have used for hundreds or years? Why not make a lazer gun that will blow stuff when it hits it. or some other form of energy that is not gun powder and explosion to propel it? This is prehistoric gun power.
