If you work in an office or from home, like I do while animating explainer videos, you might find yourself wondering how your chair can go up and down without any external power source. We know there's gas inside, and the height adjustment lever controls the gas flow. But how does it actually work?
In this video, we'll explore the inner workings of the gas spring in office chairs and see how the same mechanism is used in car trunk lids and many other applications.
Let me know what you guys think in the comment section.
If there were any error in my explanation, feel free to point that out, and I will try to fix it.

Thank you for watching and we’ll get back to you with another interesting video.

Nice animation; very professional. I hope my videos helped with your production. I found very little info on lift cylinders when I started.

How can these be so tight that even over years no gas escapes (or only very little)

I've been on the hunt to find a comfortable office chair without a gas lift because they freak me out, lol. I currently use a sitting room chair, it isn't bad but not THE most comfortable, sadly.

Is there a way to reduce the pressure in a chair gas cylinder? Mine is to hard to push down.
@quasar-ed

Unfortunately, there is no way since it is sealed. You can only replace it.

I have a chair that's stuck in the bottom position. When I release the valve I still can't move the seat by hand. Maybe the gas has leaked out? Replacement gas springs are on sale so perhaps this is a common occurrence?

@@davewilliams1568 yeah..because of the gas leaked out..For me, it took couple years of use before feeling the low gas.

@Altaka005 yes, lowering it all the way down will only expose a small section of center shaft and if it would slip through the base, it won't reach all the way to your ...so yeah can prevent a rare malfunction like that..

Had an office chair that would always go up if you weren't actively sitting on it, I guess that means the valve was stuck open.

I don't know for sure since I didn't do any freelance work for this type of video. But it depends on the studio or freelancer and where they are located.
