The Keris or kris is a traditional asymmetrical dagger found throughout the Indonesian-Malay archipelago. Used for self defence in the past, the Keris is also considered a status symbol and is purported to have supernatural abilities.
VICE meets Jro Mangku Pande Ketut Mudra, a master sword-smith and his family to understand how they revived the tradition of crafting Keris in Bali and shed light on the present, past and future of Balinese Keris forging.

you should try go to Jogja (where the Balinese Keris maker in this video learned the Keris making), the Jogja palace sultanate still hold Jamasan (bathing) of their ancestral Kerises every year. usually during the Javanese calendar new year, on the first date (Javanese Calendar is actually a combination between islamic calendar and Hindu). the purpose of Jamasan is to purify the Keris as it's host a supernatural entity inside it. Most Javanese still does some kind of worship on their Keris which usually passed down from their ancestor; my cousin is one of them. He told me that the curves (they call it LUK) is actually what scares the Dutch colonial so much that they banned the making of Keris in the past. most of the Dutch colonial officers who died in Javanese - Dutch wars (1825-1830) were killed by Keris. as the dagger is curved so when it's used to stab someone, it created a bigger wound as the Keris owner pulled the Keris out. from the outside, it would seem like a small injury but the person is bleeding internally, and they will die faster if the owner of the Keris put poison on each of the curve.

The philosophy of the keris is to utilize the enormous super-duper potential energy of iron. So in the keris used iron-carbon material in dominant quantities. a little bit of steel. a little nickel. Because carbon can record words, the kris maker when forging it needs to say prayers and hopes. The number of waves also represents positive energy programming. 13 waves and 9 waves is the hope of getting rid of bad luck and increasing sustenance and love. keep this philosophy in mind. then anyone can make a great kris.

Sadaap 🌠🔥💥💫🗡️ Watch the movie: The Golden Child. Starring Eddie Murphy. There's this scene with a flying dagger/keris that is alive. One can control the keris with telekinesis, you infuse the blade with prana (life force energy). The blade goes from Grand father to grand son to enherit. Fishermen have curved blades, rice farmers have straight blades. You have to clean and clense the blade, rice, Inscense and other ingredients as offerings for the Spirit in the keris. The keris is a physical and spiritual protector.

you cant tell from pics or vids but the real kris's are very lightweight and the blade is flimsy, they were designed traditionally to break off into an enemy's body. Many antique kris's have replaced blades/handles. Theyre not practical blades, couldnt be used as machete or really anything other than sticking an enemy. The edges arent sharp.

I'm not sure where you got the impression that a Keris is lightweight or that its blade is flimsy. It looks thin, but from the ones I've wielded, it seems no different from a dagger from elsewhere in the world in terms of weight or strength.

@@joejones9520 Perhaps it is due to their antique and vintage nature that they are thin and fragile. After Jamasan (Cleaning ritual) has been performed for years on end, any dagger including the Keris would begin to slowly lose material. New Keris or those well kept and oiled rather than cleaned in the traditional method should be heavier and much more durable than the blades you possess, because I’ve failed to have found scholarly or historical material that implies the Keris is meant to break off within an enemy’s body. It’s wavy/jagged blade implies that the severity and damage comes from multiple stabbing motions rather than a singular stab and break, and though it is coated in poison, historically enemies died from bleeding out faster than the poison can act (Methods of execution with the Keris during the era of Majapahit found executioners being efficient with this.)

@@salex354 even very old kris blades show very little use, you should know this; they werent used except in battle and that was to stab. Ive never seen one with a worn down blade, handles are different story, many are cracked and often were replaced many times on same blade.
